Dear Mausican colleagues,

I heard that the reunion was a great success. Congratulations to the Planning committee. Alicia Oxley told me it is on Facebook.I had mentioned to Maria that I was trying at the last minute to see if I could make at least part of the lime, but it just did not work out. I returned from Lyon on Sunday night, absolutely exhausted,but was still hoping to fly out to NY on Tuesday evening. On my return to office, my students requested that I do a review before their supplemental exams which was  scheduled for the following week, so I decided to do it on Wednesday, which put paid to my plans to travel out on Tuesday night. Duty before pleasure. I will certainly be back in Trinidad for the 2013 reunion.

Just read your bio on the Weekly E-mails. Yes,you made your contribution, and must gasp in agony at the thought that we as a people seem to have lost our way.

Glad to know you were associatied with the Unit Trust Corp. The brainchild of a UWI graduate of the class of '67, the year I graduated.

People used to wonder what ecnomists do. Well that group from UWI- Richardson Andrews, Clyde Crosby  and others certainly showed what they do.

As a teacher, I take pride in the achievements of Mausicans outside the classroom. I am proudest of Anna  Maria Mora, Lester Efebo Wilinson, our first Ambasador to Cuba,Dr. Harold Robertson, former head of mission in New York and other traiblazers.

Perhaps Maria can be instrumental in creating in the library at NALIS in town, a wall of honor of dstinguished Mausicans who went beyond. Perhaps she could have them call it the Vere Romain-Achong Memorial Wall. She was my sister in law who harangued the governments for about 35 years, to build a decent library. She once damaged her foot  when it went though the floor at the Public Library on Queens Park East. She was the first medical librarian at POSGH, and trained about half the librarians now working in TNT. She died in 2006 just after helping launch my second novel at NALIS- The Sun, The Snow The Sea.

Would it not be good if the theme for 2013 is The Impact of Education- Show them a book

and watch them change the world?

Congratulations Anna Maria on your election as Deputy Political Leader of COP, a really challenging assignment, every success to you!

I was going through my Mausica e-mail and I noted your suggestion regarding Mausicans who have a mark here or there. It made me try to recollect whether I had done anything worthwhile with all the opportunities I have had and I came up with a couple worth filing away for future reference.

1. At Workers Bank, I was instrumental in and overall responsible for the introduction of Automatic Banking in Trinidad and Tobago and established the very first Automatic Banking Machine in T & T in 1978 at the Independence Square & Duncan St. Head Office. I became Asst. General Managerof the Bank.

2. At Chaguaramas Development Authority where I became General Manager/CEO, I was single handedly responsible for regaining for Trinidad and Tobago the remaining lands retained by the US Government for its own use, when Chaguaramas was returned to Trinidad & Tobago. A little known fact was that at the time of the famous restoration, three large areas in the middle of Chaguaramas, identified as N1, N2 and N3 and perhaps the areas most desirable for development, were not part of the Agreement and weren't transferred, so we could do nothing with it. i immediately set about negotiating for its return so that we could proceed with our development plans and succeeded in 1991 when the lands were eventually handed over by US Ambassador Sally Cowal.

3. Together with Ian Gianetti, we planned designed and engineered the development of Chaguaramas from the derelict wasteland that it was when I joined the CDA in 1989 to the Yachting and Entertainment Capital of Trinidad & Tobago within a few short years, notwithstanding considerable difficulties and challenges from Governmental agencies.

4. As a Director of the Unit Trust Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago I contributed to the development of the Unit Trust from the struggling organisation it was when I joined in 1988 to one of the real success stories of the local financial sector. I don't claim responsibilty for its development but I admit I made my contribution.

5. As President of the Association of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Trinidad and Tobago, I was instumental in and one of the driving forces behind the modernisation of Companies Legislation in Trindad & Tobago and  worked on the Committee that drafted and persued the enactment of the new Companies Act in 1997. This Act replaced the outdated Act of 1948 and removed many of the restrictions hindering private investment in Trinidad and Tobago and opened the way for massive development which followed including foreign direct investment.

6. I was instrumental in the establishment of the Institute of Banking of Trinidad and Tobago, was elected to its first Board of Directors and became its fourth President in 1989.

Along the way, I placed first in the world in the Professional Examinations of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, UK in 1983.

I had the honour and privilege to go to Mausica twice : once as a pioneer student and later as Mathematics Lecturer in 1971.

I have been informed that there are at least three flights arriving at JFK on Tuesday 26th. There have been requests for airport shuttle reservations.

Currently we have reserved 2 shuttles, one each for BW520 Arriving at 5:55am in the name of Joan Parris-Brathwaite; and the other flight BW428 Arriving at 11:50am in the name of Alisford Phillip.

Flight BW 522 Arriving at 2pm has no airport shuttle reservation because only one person has requested service. If you are on that flight, please contact Gwendolyn Williams at gwendolinewilliams@yahoo.com or let me know ASAP.

Those of you traveling from Canada, please contact Brenda Alexander-Perez for information regarding Hofstra shuttle schedule from the Hempstead station in Long Island.

There are two corrections to be made on the Itinerary that was sent out. Please take note:

(1)  Check-in will take place at The Netherlands Complex (Oak Street) instead of  Nassau Hall as previously stated. If you arrive at the Student Center, you will be directed to this Complex. (suitcases et al!!) This is all on the NORTH campus.

(2) The address for our New York Waterway Harbor Cruise should read Pier 78, 38th Street & 12th Avenue. This is important for those people who will meet us there.

1. STAND WITH FEET SHOULDER DISTANCE APART, TOES POINTING FORWARD.

2. .HOLD RIGHT EAR LOBE WITH LEFT HAND.  PLACE THUMB ON OUTER PART OF LOBE AND INDEX FINGER BEHIND LOBE/

3. HOLD LEFT EAR LOBE WITH RIGHT HAND… THUMB ON FRONT PART OF LOBE, INDEX FINGER BEHIND LOBE.  ARMS ARE NOW CROSSED OVER CHEST WITH RIGHT ARM OVER LEFT.

4. LOOKING STRAIGHR AHEAD,  SQUAT BY SLOWLY BENDING KNEES AND LOWERING BODY TO FLOOR.  GO AS LOWW AS YOU CAN, THEN RETURN TO STANDING POSITION.

• EXHALE AS YOU SQUAT AND INHALE AS YOU STAND… THIS INSTRUCTION MAY BE REVERSED… DO WHAT SEEMS MORE COMFORTABLE TO YOU.

5. REPEAT THIS EXERCISE FOR  14-21 TIMES AS YOU CONTINUE TO HOLD YOUR EAR LOBES AS INSTRUCTED.

Just a few quick reminders with some titbit information for our participants.

First, thanks to Pat  Ryan for that plug-in regarding our Reunion. Its an enormous amount of work made "nightmarish"  with our  beloved latecomers. But as we say "All ah we is one family"!!!!

By the time, you read this on the Blog, the group rate reservation at the Long Island Marriott will expire in two days .( June 26th)  So far only two rooms have been reserved. Pssssssssst....there is room here at Hofstra  for everyone!! That's all I will say.

Those people who are traveling on the midnight flight Caribbean Airlines BW 520  arriving here at 5:55am July 26th, and are staying at Hofstra University, please let us include you in the Airport Shuttle arrangements. We already have 7 seats reserved and there is room for 4 more people.

We have a hectic day planned for you on Wednesday 27th July in Manhattan. "Comfortable and casual" wear is the keyword.

More news next week. With 100 participants ,we are looking forward to have a blast.!

I have only been to one re-union so far, the Tobago one in 07. I had hoped for Grenada, but funds were not there, same with New York. Once, I would have gone, and put it on a credit card, now I have learnt, in my 70th year, to be more fiscally cautious.

If there is any one among you who has not been to New York before, I hope you will enjoy its smoggy, dusty beauty, its noise and excitement.

If you want to visit a couple of out of the way places, try The Cloisters at Washington Heights, its a recreation of a medieval monastery, and it was the first place where I saw a nativity scene with one of the three wise men being African. The set is from the 13 or 14 century, I believe, long before racism infested the world.

The other religious site I would recommend is the Cathedral of St. John the Devine, the Anglican church in Harlem that stand across from Columbia University at 133d and Lennox Ave. The church, perhaps the largest in North America, can accomodate twelve weddings without one disturbing the other. The church has an interesting history. Begun about 1850, when Harlen was white, it continues to be built up to today. A stone mason who came out from England about forty years ago to work on the building, noticed the graffitti creeping up on buildings all around. He decided that if he hired the neighbourhood young men to work on the church, they would have something meaningful to do. So, he began a class in stone masonry.Young "angry" African Americans learning the ancient art of stone carving from an Englishman. The vandals have never sprayed the church, it was part of them, you see. The white Americans fled to the suburbs, but Anglicans do not sell a church, so the cathedral has survived and is a magnificent structure .I once met a guy who SAID he had gone to Columbia University and I asked him about the cathedral. He had never seen it. I knew he had not gone there. You cannot "not see' the Cathedral of St John the Devine.

If God spares life and limb I'd be in Trinidad for the 2013 get together, and stay on for Emancipation, something else I have missed since 2007.

Next rounds is Chessawatee Ojah. Yes man, he was ah Chess addict. He start tuh give some vital statistics. { Felix and Finbar dat word on de Spelling test}Hear how dis teacher boy read out 189,057. In perfect diction, he say, “ One hundred and eighty-nine thousand, no thousand and fifty-seven.

GTC beat we rarse.

Another time during assembly, Harry Joe calling out names  tuh go on teaching practice. . I hoping tuh go to Arima New Government. Meh pardnahs, Loy-D Brown and Earl John was teachin dey. We use tuh go across by Loy-D an eat we plastic container ah food  and take ah drink. Dat was fun. 

Back tuh de Joe. He calling out names in groups of three. Wen he come tuh de end of de Bs, wit ah straight face he announce, “Bonas, Bullen , Burnett.”

Somebody shout out, “Really?” Another one say, “Ah did tell yuh so.” It was mas in de place. 

In 1967, de folk song choir went on ah camp tuh Dominica.  De first day we went on de rocky beach in Goodwill, we pick up ah funky smell and had tuh run back tuh Goodwill High School. It was ah mess. Wen we tell Fitzy about de experience, he call we “Stool Pigeons.” Yes man, Mr. Williams could real talk de same ting dat had de beach smelling so.

By de way, I believe we picked up “La Porrinden” in Dominica.

My name is Hyacinth Jordan. The one whose name you dont have on your mailing list.  My surname was Aberdeen and I was in Mausica from ''66-- 68''. I was a resident of Kirkendale. Someone asked about another Carnavon. There was Jacqueline Carnavon . I think she was Earl's sister. She and Agnes Howell were roommates also in Kirkendale. They were ''67--69''. It's very nice to read the Mausica Weely. I remember some of the names mentioned. Every year I go to Trini I meet up with some of my Mausican friends like Khiman, Shiela, Indra and Zinnet. We were from the group of 73-75.

Has anyone ever had to get a course content for every subject that was done in MTC? I am trying to register as a teacher in Australia and they need all the topics that were done there.

"The Model from Kirkendale" by Oswald Hem Lee (Swadingo) was on Mausicans' lips for months afterwards. What was interesting to note about this performance was that the subject of the calypso, Pamela Gilkes, actually performed on stage with Hem Lee.

I thought that the calypso we were introduced to as the Mausica Road March was quite intriguing, as well as Lancelot Brown's selection for Carnival 74.

Thank you for providing this medium for Mausican News.

Richie....the goodly gentleman did show up. Thanks. He looks well.

But my time was cut short. We were unable to meet and have lunch.

However,  we were able to renew acquaintances and chat about Mausica and Mausicans.

Sorry, that Adelia and Allan were unable to be there. but I am still thankful for meeting mausicans over the phone.

I attended the Carnival in Atlanta, and saw Allan's band.."We kinda thing".

It was refreshing to see the Caribbean coming together.

Trinidad with "Palance" etc. like that was the roadmarch, still sounding as sweet and jumpy as ever.

Virgin Islands did well  with their sort of military march.

When my friends saw  the wining down  in some bands , they quickly asked, "Is she from Trinidad?"

However, I wish that Mac Farlane , some of Trini revellers, Roslyn Gabriel's S>E>A students awaiting results, and more steelbands could be invited.

Overall, it was a fair sample of Trinidad, but moreso of the Carribbean.

We went to "Tassa" Trini restaurant after, and hand some calaloo and pelau, a little Bus up shirt etc.

I am winding down my holiday now in Florida.

Thank you, Errol, for printing my request ....Mausicans in Atlanta etc. and posting my photo. Thanks to all Mausicans who made my holiday a pleasant one.

Keep up the Calypso lists. Every hostelhad its Kaiso princes and princesses with songs like

"If yuh see them flies",

"Sausage in the morning, Sausage in the evening"

Don't forget Louise and Kirkendalians contributions. Mike and they can still sing  "OH WASA". I give them permission.  It was by no means a rude song. I was very naive then, and sang it on behalf of those who hardly got water from WASA, so do not make it into a suggestive song as some Mausicans did.

The Tobago boys were great in music too. Richie reminded me of the many calypsoes that he composed, also for Myrtle. I enjoyed  Vernella and  V  the pastor, and Philo on the piano. Don't mention the boys on the drums and Earl Knights with the trumpet? Hope some of these artistes will be there. Make cds and videos for those who are absent to enjoy.

Remember' Minute' silence for Roland, Pat James and the others when you get to New York.

I am almost sure it was Lester who sang "Bring Back  We 330."  I can remember his suggestive pronunciation of that "paltry" sum. One of those guys sang one on "Grell Cup"- that's the garden competition we had each year. Lester sang it at a concert we held at Golden Grove prison in  '71  but I don't remember if he was the composer. Those were the good old days.

Hello fellow Mausicans

I have followed the prep and planning for the New Yprk reunion with great interest, and pride in the organising team who are really taking this labour of love so seriously.  I am unable to attend for various reasons, but my thoughts will be with you all.   It will seem like ages till 2013 when Trinidad will be the golden venue.   I trust that by 2012 good.  and reliable access ( sea and air) to Montserrat will be in place so that those of you who are so minded can come and check us out in the interim year.  August 2011 will mark my 30th year on the island of Montserrat and I have never regretted coming here, as it brought me closer ( than the UK) to Trinidad, land of my birth , and Guadeloupe which allowed me to spread my French wings.

The volcano has been reasonably quiet since Feb 2010,   We are getting serious about exploitation of Geothermal energy and good things are happening even in our depressed economy.  So think about it.  check www.visitmontserrat.com  for info on the island and www.mvo.ms for up to the minute news re the volcano which you can actually see face to face!   Have a great reunion and please  take on Buzzie's request to sort out your accommodation needs.   No one should be frazzled  when the time comes around.

The attachment is the photo of a stone I found during my morning walk last Wednesday... it is faithful in form and proportions to the island of Montserrat. A very uncanny detail is a proportionately large "bump" where the volcano dome is located in the south east!.   I keep on wondering if someone manufactured this and left it around to be found!

Gilbert "Happy" O Connor, I can never forget. When we went to Guyana in 1970 to help them build their road, an something happened in the camp, and a girl from UWI complained bitterly, and in public at breakfast,  to the camp commander, Mr. Young, what her fellow UWI students had done. 10 minutes later, Happy had a calypso composed. He came to me asking me whether I could accompany him on my quatro. With the encouragement of another Mausican, we were on the public address system singing the calypso for the entire camp. Because of the calypso the girl was given an uncomplimentary name for the duration of the rest of her stay in Guyana.

First , I  must apologize for  assigning the wrong last name to calypsonian Agnes Howell.  Then I forgot to mention Lord or Mighty Scratchy, the man who sang about those students from Pt Zagaya who forgot how tuh eat dasheen, yam and breadfruit once dey enter Mausica

Scratchy, my Havenite brother,  was bad fuh days.. Early Saturday morning ah fella call meh and wanted tuh know how ah could leave out de Mighty Richie. Then he proceeded tuh sing about three calypsoes fuh meh. Godwyn Richardson real good too.  He lose ah competition by half a point.

By no means was my list complete. So doh shoot de messenger. Just come tuh de reunion and leh we sing.

I visited her at her home when I was in NY some time ago. She is the principal of a Public School ( was at the time.) Maybe she has retired by now, will try to find Junior and find out.  Junior also received a big time award from some foreign country, very recently ( really should ah cut it out from d newspaper) for his Innovation in Steel Pan. He created some new type of pan or chrome paint for pan. I remember seeing him with pans of all different colours surrounding him.  Dey really was lookin pretty.    Will really need to get the correct information. We can have a Mausica Gallery,with Mausicans who have changed or are changing the face of our nation daily.  Maybe we could leave that for the 50th Anniversary. (OMG!!! Ah open mih mout. Happy made it to the Calypso semi-finals with a lovely ditty caricaturing then PM George Chambers. It was titled Boy George and he was dressed accordingly.

Rutherford was based in Barbados and represented that country in the CARIFESTA calypso monarch or the World Calypso Monarch competitions…(a little hazy here, not Hazel). By the way, what about him.

I was a bit tardy in sending my congratulation to Carol Browne, Principal of the  Cascade School for the Deaf,on her achievement for yet another year. at the Sports for the Special Schools. Here team won the March Past as well the Best Mascot.  One of her students has been chosen to represent T&T  in swimming at the Special Olympics in Greece i in July 2011. The student hails from the small village of Blanchisseuse situated on the  north coast of Trinidad.   He would  have  develop  his love for swimming and .natural skill from his home environment. He now has to adapt to swimming in a pool which means staying in Port of Spain. Teachers always rise to the occasion. and so did a teacher at the school..In addition Carol and here teachers are feverishly raising funds to assist this young man to realise his dreams.  In addititon to this  a teacher must accompany him to assist him in  area of communication.This is a worthy cause.  I appealing  for assistance for this young man.

But Rodney! Ay! Ay! You don't know about  Lady Observer's (my) calypso Mamas without Papas.Ask Gwendolyn Williams.Never has a calypso aroused such ire. I had to be escorted back to my hostel that night. I was attacked verbally and physically. I recall Ken Parmasar and Noel T. being at my side. Some persons did not talk to me for years after graduating from Mausica. After all this time I would like to publicly apologize to those whom I hurt. Some of them were not even in my contemplation but thought it applied to them. I wrote that calypso in 10 minuters flat out of anger. Being hurt myself, does not give one the permission to hurt others and my Mausican sisters were hurt by that calypso,but I was young, in my teens.I am so much older and wiser now.

It does not seem I will be able to join the posse in NY after all . I will be presenting a paper and attending a council meeting at a Family Law World conference in France the week before and do not think I will get another week off from work. I am in Orlando next week .Any Mausicans there? I will be staying at Hilton Bonnet Creek from Wednesday to Sunday.I would love to see a fellow Mausican, since we all over the globe.

Have a great week all. I will be in Trinidad for a weekend in June and hope to check Fitzie. I spoke to him no too long ago when I was in Trinidad.He is still as sharp as ever. Anyone remembers when is his birthday?  I know the Cuff is January 6 but Fitzie's gone out my head.

Then I discovered she was referring to Ambassador  Rodney Charles. Imagine my relief. I never knew there were so many Rodneys from Mausica..

Congratulations, Ambassador Rodney. Looking forward to meeting you at the reunion.

By de way, ah have  ah big debate goin on in meh head. “Who was de best calypsonian tuh pass thru Mausica, de best Road March and de best composition. In my day, 1966-1968, we had some real good ones: Ramdoo, Lester Efebo Wilkinson, Ten Dollar Fine,,  Selwyn Beckles , War, Gregory Byrne, Watchman, Cecile Nicholson, Yuh bong tuh come back Again, and ah girl called Zephyr and Agnes Carnovan. Later on I heard about Crooner, Happy and Joe Stephens. Among de pioneers there were Trevor Davis and Gelly. For best composition and national hit, my vote goes to my roommate, Leroy Cox. His calypso, Mausica, is a classic. Solid Seven, a combo from La Brea, recorded it and called it Go Go calypso.

Yuh know wat, forget de debate. Just bring musical instruments and copies of de lyrics.

We go sing and dance and have ah good lime. Bring ah bottle and some finger foods.. Ah deck ah cards fuh dem Brag players. Remember we staying in ah hostel. . PS. No flooding of de people hostel. Keep ah eye on Sieurattan.

Greetings. Sorry for my delayed response but I was away for the weekend.

I have reserved for you a single room at the Suite style housing accommodation. Its the same for Janice. You both will occupy one "unit" so that means you share the same bathroom. There is a campus cafeteria but there are places close to the campus to have a meal.

On Tuesday 26th, you can check in as early as 6am. The Registration/Welcome cocktails  will begin at 5pm and this goes till 9pm.

On Wednesday we head out to the city at 7:30am. The show we are looking at is "Memphis." and we return to the University at 7:30pm

Thursday morning is free until 11am . We go to a nearby park for a picnic until 6pm.

Friday is free until the Dinner dance which starts at 8pm.

Greetings. We wish to say thanks to all who have responded to the Big Apple Mausica Reunion.  The Planning Committee is working feverishly to keep things moving.

We are in the second stage of our planning, that of making reservations for all our scheduled events. To those people who have done partial payments, it is important to indicate your intention of joining us at the scheduled events, so you would be included in our reservation numbers. I am sure you are aware of how important it is to reserve your spot, if you are planning to attend a function.

Some people have  requested transportation arrangements from the airport to Hofstra University. I just want to let you know how much I appreciate getting the weekly emails. I read them every week. As a matter of fact, I look forward to the emails. I have sent in only one email since you started but I am always intrigued by the mails which are sent.  Most times I do not know the writers personally but I read and enjoy the mails a lot. When I see that Pat PS was able to connect with fellow Mausicans in her area I realise that your role in keeping this weekly emailing alive is truly a wonderful work of love. This is important for us as Mausicans to keep in touch with each other. Through this medium I was able to rekindle a relationship I had with my good friend Lal Ramesar in New York. I cannot come to New York this year and I am real sad about this . I have been to all the reunions so far.So, as the reunion dates draw closer, I feel sadder to know that I will not be a part of ths occasion. I just want to wish all a wonderful reunion 2011. On behalf of the Mausica Teachers' Alumni and Friends, New York Chapter,I wish to extend a warm welcome to our Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, Rodney Charles. Congratulations, we are delighted.

Mary and I visited Rodney, and even though we had never met Rodney before, we were welcomed in the way that a Mausican greets a Mausican!   After two hours of "ole talk" about the "good ole days" of Mausica, we were given the assurance that Rodney will attend our Reunion.  He has since been encouraging his fellow Mausicans, especially his year group, to join us at the Reunion.

From our conversation, I am sure that Rodney will be effective in bringing about substantial and meaningful improvements in his role as Ambassador. We wish him continued success in your post.

BELLAMY: FELIX GREGORY of 25 Pro Queen Street, Arima died on Thursday April 21 2011. Father of Brenda Bellamy Goodyear, Cheryl, Michael, Noel Bellamy, the late Vaughn and Alfred Bellamy. Brother of Laura Thomas and Haynes Bellamy (USA). Grandfather of 20. Great grandfather of 22. Uncle of The Thomasí, Jane Scott (USA) and many others. My condolences to the Knox family. What a great celebration there should be for his life and the mission he completed down here. Your Dad lived to a grand age that has been promised to those who are obedient to their parents. He must have been.

On Wednesday 13th, we said good-bye to our Dad, John Phillip Knox age 94.

He was the former Pioneer Principal and later Superintendent of the School for Blind Children in Santa Cruz, Trinidad.

His commitment to the education of  the Blind is well documented, but he was also the guiding light and mentor to many.

Hi Errol and Fellow Mausicans,

Thanks for sharing the Mausica news. I don't know many of them but it still brings joy, as I see the spirit of what we were about still exists with so many.  I'm soooooooooooh sorry that I won't be able to be at the New York reunion. So I'll have to enjoy it vicariously via commentaries.  Life's financial emergencies have messed with my plans.

Blessings to the families of Mausicans who went to God and a truly joyous Easter to all of you.

PS In your last letter you requested info and Mausica created products and I'd like to make mention of an instrument I created to help students in the early grades with their phonics and the blending process for reading.  The CD is titled 'Pat Sings Phonics'.  More info on it can be found on the website Patsingsphonics.com  I Think Ma Cuffie would be proud to know that her influence on us as creators helped to spur me on to use my creativity throughout my teaching career and life.

Ii've lost my info on her.  Do you mind resending? I'd appreciate it.  I'd love to contact her in some way.
