Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2011-Jun-03-1202Hrs
Some lines from notable Mausican calypsoes that I still remember
" Ryan, Hospe, and Mac, see them running through the track"
"Well the folk song choir, in Mausica, is the greatest ever"
"Ramos, Celia Parker, Chicken, Hops and Saturina, "
Gilbert "Happy" O Connor, I can never forget. When we went to Guyana in 1970 to help them build their road, an something happened in the camp, and a girl from UWI complained bitterly, and in public at breakfast,  to the camp commander, Mr. Young, what her fellow UWI students had done. 10 minutes later, Happy had a calypso composed. He came to me asking me whether I could accompany him on my quatro. With the encouragement of another Mausican, we were on the public address system singing the calypso for the entire camp. Because of the calypso the girl was given an uncomplimentary name for the duration of the rest of her stay in Guyana.

Dolphus, yuh feel is only you name Rodney or what.  Sorry ah make yuh head hurt yuh.  I eh know no Agnes Carnavan in Mausica, wha year she was? Yuh eh remember Earl Carnavon. Ah know  Agnes Howell, Junior Howell sister, who was a riot all by herself in Mausica, she used to sing calypso, and was like salt, in everyting. Ah hope dat someone get in touch wid her. I visited her at her home when I was in NY some time ago. She is the principal of a Public School ( was at the time.) Maybe she has retired by now, will try to find Junior and find out.  Junior also received a big time award from some foreign country, very recently ( really should ah cut it out from d newspaper) for his Innovation in Steel Pan. He created some new type of pan or chrome paint for pan. I remember seeing him with pans of all different colours surrounding him.  Dey really was lookin pretty.    Will really need to get the correct information. We can have a Mausica Gallery, with Mausicans who have changed or are changing the face of our nation daily.  Maybe we could leave that for the 50th Anniversary. (OMG!!! Ah open mih mout. Leh mih shut it fas, fas.) Ah gorn. Love you all. Blessings Abundant and a World Full of Love.

RE: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2011-May-27-1217Hrs
I humbly apologize for the mix up that I made with the names in  my haste last time.
Correction  ---Richie and Rodney are two different Mausicans.
It is Godwin "Richie" Richardson
"Richie" is short for Richardson. Richie is trying to arrange a lunch or so.
Allan Simpson is very involved in the Atlanta Carnival this weekend. He is bringing out a band.
I look forward to seeing all  on this weekend. This is also Memorial weekend. Monday is a Holiday in USA.
Have a Good weekend! There is light after the storm last night. I empathise with those who suffered damages to property  and /or self.
Cheer up. Praise God it was not worse.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel. You have a better life to come if you believe and trust in God. Keep courage.
Here is a surprise in the next e mail. I have only changed from dark brown afro to lovely silver grey. My daughter's photography. you can view her website.
Have fun at the New York reunion.

Reunion

2011-May-27-0658Hrs
Hazel, Wot ees dis, like yuh getting sorf in your golden years. Kaiso is kaiso and like it or not picong is picong, especially when they are combined. …..will miss you in NY. Keep the TT flag flying.
Rodney, notwithstanding being of his year group, I vote for Mike Duncan ’72 (Sweet Mike)..
This was about the Cuff and Mausica….
So reach assembly
Eight RTT
Got some titilarity, no vulgarity
She give us all a chance
To get a high Q performance
No dirty pride or bottle pelting
No nocturnal choral speaking
There was also, Lester Osouna and Hollis Amede.
I recall Hospedales, Bobb and myself as chorus for Lester or was it Amede, based on the then increase in salary.
Bring back the three thirty
We don’t want no more three eighty
We want back the three thirty oops
Leh we run by Mrs Cuffie
Valerie telling Happy, boy doh bother with them
With your three oops and my three thirty
Six thirty for all ah we
On the big stage, two made it there….Happy and Rutherford.
Happy made it to the Calypso semi-finals with a lovely ditty caricaturing then PM George Chambers. It was titled Boy George and he was dressed accordingly.
Rutherford was based in Barbados and represented that country in the CARIFESTA calypso monarch or the World Calypso Monarch competitions…(a little hazy here, not Hazel). By the way, what about him.
Me…I was Lord Have Mercy…the ditty escapes me

Hi Errol,
I was a bit tardy in sending my congratulation to Carol Browne, Principal of the  Cascade School for the Deaf,on her achievement for yet another year. at the Sports for the Special Schools. Here team won the March Past as well the Best Mascot.  One of her students has been chosen to represent T&T  in swimming at the Special Olympics in Greece i in July 2011. The student hails from the small village of Blanchisseuse situated on the  north coast of Trinidad.   He would  have  develop  his love for swimming and .natural skill from his home environment. He now has to adapt to swimming in a pool which means staying in Port of Spain. Teachers always rise to the occasion. and so did a teacher at the school..In addition Carol and here teachers are feverishly raising funds to assist this young man to realise his dreams.  In addititon to this  a teacher must accompany him to assist him in  area of communication. This is a worthy cause.  I appealing  for assistance for this young man.

Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2011-May-26-2219Hrs
But Rodney! Ay! Ay! You don't know about  Lady Observer's (my) calypso Mamas without Papas.Ask Gwendolyn Williams.Never has a calypso aroused such ire. I had to be escorted back to my hostel that night. I was attacked verbally and physically. I recall Ken Parmasar and Noel T. being at my side. Some persons did not talk to me for years after graduating from Mausica. After all this time I would like to publicly apologize to those whom I hurt. Some of them were not even in my contemplation but thought it applied to them. I wrote that calypso in 10 minuters flat out of anger. Being hurt myself, does not give one the permission to hurt others and my Mausican sisters were hurt by that calypso, but I was young, in my teens.I am so much older and wiser now.
It does not seem I will be able to join the posse in NY after all . I will be presenting a paper and attending a council meeting at a Family Law World conference in France the week before and do not think I will get another week off from work. I am in Orlando next week .Any Mausicans there? I will be staying at Hilton Bonnet Creek from Wednesday to Sunday.I would love to see a fellow Mausican, since we all over the globe.
Have a great week all. I will be in Trinidad for a weekend in June and hope to check Fitzie. I spoke to him no too long ago when I was in Trinidad. He is still as sharp as ever. Anyone remembers when is his birthday?  I know the Cuff is January 6 but Fitzie's gone out my head.
Love to all.

Hello Errol,
I.m back.
Have a good day.
Rodney
"Hello My Fellow Mausicans,
I’m back.
Imagine my surprise about a month ago when Maria said I had offered something for the Reunion. . I didn’t remember making any promises. As I racked my brain to recall the memory, I continued reading. Then I discovered she was referring to Ambassador  Rodney Charles. Imagine my relief. I never knew there were so many Rodneys from Mausica..
Congratulations, Ambassador Rodney. Looking forward to meeting you at the reunion.
To avoid any mix up in de future, call me Rodney F,  Dolphus or Foster.
By de way, ah have  ah big debate goin on in meh head. “Who was de best calypsonian tuh pass thru Mausica, de best Road March and de best composition. In my day, 1966-1968, we had some real good ones: Ramdoo, Lester Efebo Wilkinson, Ten Dollar Fine,,  Selwyn Beckles , War, Gregory Byrne, Watchman, Cecile Nicholson, Yuh bong tuh come back Again, and ah girl called Zephyr and Agnes Carnovan. Later on I heard about Crooner, Happy and Joe Stephens. Among de pioneers there were Trevor Davis and Gelly. For best composition and national hit, my vote goes to my roommate, Leroy Cox. His calypso, Mausica, is a classic. Solid Seven, a combo from La Brea, recorded it and called it Go Go calypso.
Yuh know wat, forget de debate. Just bring musical instruments and copies of de lyrics.
We go sing and dance and have ah good lime. Bring ah bottle and some finger foods.. Ah deck ah cards fuh dem Brag players. Remember we staying in ah hostel. . PS. No flooding of de people hostel. Keep ah eye on Sieurattan.
As usual,
Rodney"

RE: Mausica Reunion

2011-May-19-1448Hrs
Hello Mausicans,
Greetings. We wish to say thanks to all who have responded to the Big Apple Mausica Reunion.  The Planning Committee is working feverishly to keep things moving.
We are in the second stage of our planning, that of making reservations for all our scheduled events. To those people who have done partial payments, it is important to indicate your intention of joining us at the scheduled events, so you would be included in our reservation numbers. I am sure you are aware of how important it is to reserve your spot, if you are planning to attend a function.
Some people have  requested transportation arrangements from the airport to Hofstra University. Please note that we have negotiated with a Taxi service for your convenience  but you will be responsible for the carfare.  The Planning Committee will provide  transportation from Hofstra  to the various scheduled events.
Could you please spare a moment of your time and send me names of any deceased since the last Reunion?. We are trying to compile a list of same to pay our respectful tribute. The Planning Committee will be very grateful for your help.
Please let us hear of your concerns. We are looking forward to seeing you soon.

RE: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2011-May-13-0908Hrs
Hi Errol,
I just want to let you know how much I appreciate getting the weekly emails. I read them every week. As a matter of fact, I look forward to the emails. I have sent in only one email since you started but I am always intrigued by the mails which are sent.  Most times I do not know the writers personally but I read and enjoy the mails a lot. When I see that Pat PS was able to connect with fellow Mausicans in her area I realise that your role in keeping this weekly emailing alive is truly a wonderful work of love. This is important for us as Mausicans to keep in touch with each other. Through this medium I was able to rekindle a relationship I had with my good friend Lal Ramesar in New York. I cannot come to New York this year and I am real sad about this . I have been to all the reunions so far.So, as the reunion dates draw closer, I feel sadder to know that I will not be a part of ths occasion. I just want to wish all a wonderful reunion 2011. I will see you all in two years time. Thanks Errol for this service that you offer to all Mausicans. Keep it up. God Bless you.

Rodney Richardson (1972-1974) Atlanta
Allan Simpson ( 1976-78 ) Atlanta
Glenda Lewis Henry (1965-1967)......Philadelpia
(I was so happy and excited to hear from them and would like to arrange a dinner or lunch with them  hopefully on 22nd May 2011 if it is convenient to them.
You know, it is always refreshing to re unite after so many years and also to meet Mausicans of whom we may have heard or seen in photos but never met.
I appreciate all the calls. Sorry I was not able to hear some calls when we were at the Grand Canyon. The service went. So I heard the voice mails later. I will, with God's grace, get in contact with each one.

FOR THE BLOG
On behalf of the Mausica Teachers' Alumni and Friends, New York Chapter,I wish to extend a warm welcome to our Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations, Rodney Charles. Congratulations, we are delighted.
Mary and I visited Rodney, and even though we had never met Rodney before, we were welcomed in the way that a Mausican greets a Mausican!   After two hours of "ole talk" about the "good ole days" of Mausica, we were given the assurance that Rodney will attend our Reunion.  He has since been encouraging his fellow Mausicans, especially his year group, to join us at the Reunion.
From our conversation, I am sure that Rodney will be effective in bringing about substantial and meaningful improvements in his role as Ambassador. We wish him continued success in your post.
Welcome Rodney!!

PS. The Reunion is on, going full steam ahead. We welcome all latecomers!

RE: Passing the Torch

2011-APR-25-2047Hrs
Hello Errol,
Attached is Mr Williams' response to my question; "What does passing the torch mean to me?"
It's another gem. to share with the Mausica family.
As usual,
Rodney

"WHAT DOES PASSING THE TORCH MEAN TOME?.
Tarred burning sticks or torches provided street lighting in Antioch, Greece around 450 A.D.
The metonymy “passing the torch” implies passing on to others the means and responsibility for mental and spiritual enlightenment; to me it underscores my sacred obligation to bequeath to my posterity the fruits of my divinely appointed life’s labors, bright and vibrant, so that akin to the manner in which the final torchbearer, relaying the Olympic flame from Greece to every Games venue, enkindles  the flare in the waiting basin, so to would the marriage of our united life missions be ENGULFED IN THE FULL EFFLUGENCE OF GOD’S GLORY.

Fellow Mausicans,
On Wednesday 13th, we said good-bye to our Dad, John Phillip Knox age 94.
He was the former Pioneer Principal and later Superintendent of the School for Blind Children in Santa Cruz, Trinidad.
His commitment to the education of  the Blind is well documented, but he was also the guiding light and mentor to many.
For those who offered prayers and condolences, my brother Frank and I wish to extend our thanks.

Hi Errol and Fellow Mausicans,
Thanks for sharing the Mausica news. I don't know many of them but it still brings joy, as I see the spirit of what we were about still exists with so many.  I'm soooooooooooh sorry that I won't be able to be at the New York reunion. So I'll have to enjoy it vicariously via commentaries.  Life's financial emergencies have messed with my plans.
Blessings to the families of Mausicans who went to God and a truly joyous Easter to all of you.
PS In your last letter you requested info and Mausica created products and I'd like to make mention of an instrument I created to help students in the early grades with their phonics and the blending process for reading.  The CD is titled 'Pat Sings Phonics'.  More info on it can be found on the website Patsingsphonics.com  I Think Ma Cuffie would be proud to know that her influence on us as creators helped to spur me on to use my creativity throughout my teaching career and life.
Ii've lost my info on her.  Do you mind resending? I'd appreciate it.  I'd love to contact her in some way.
Thanks in advance, and a great day to you and all.

Mausican brothers and sisters
Today, April 10, 2011 ,  I completed a 5k walk in about one hour. MY first attempt at anything like that.  I was 7th out of 7 walkers and was motivated by the promise of a T shirt for completing the course!...  a souvenir related to the  scientific conference held  earlier in the week to contemplate inter alia the 15 year story of our ongoing volcanic eruption.  July 18 2011 will mark the 16th anniversary ... how time flies! We used to think it would all be over in a very short while.   The conference was a great success and was attended by scientists from all over the world, some visiting the island for the first time.
In the news this morning I heard that the No 1 walker made it in 42 mins 8sec... so this senior did well. There were about 15 runners and the winner got in at 22 mins  approx.. I came away with a souvenir pen.... apparently the shirt was just bait for which I fell, but I confess that when I was tempted to throw in the towel it was the shirt that kept me going!
Some people funny eh?   My motto   THE VIRTUE LIES IN THE STRUGGLE, NOT THE PRIZE   MY mantra during the challenging parts of the walk  THE LORD IS MY STRENGTH AND MY SALVATION    Best wishes, Pat

Hi fellow Mausicans
All I know is that I was at the 25th Anniversary Reunion... was it Ansel Wyatt who supplied Music?
Passing the torch... so beautifully captured and released to us by Aunty Daph.  Thanks for sharing Rodney ( I thought you were just teasing us at first!)
She is a true gem.
Thanks Errol for sharing Linda's photos with us... so beautiful, and as I have experienced her since our first meeting at the Tobago reunion, it comes from within.   Love and blessings, Pat
I would like to be in contact with Mausicans residing in North Trinidad who are SERIOUS Music Festival fans... trying to set something up for 2012

Re: Passing The Torch
Hello Errol,
It look so , boy.
I'll ask Marjorie to send it  from her laptop.
Rodney

RE: Passing The Torch
Hello Errol,
Here it is.
Rodney
”WHAT DOES PASSING THE TORCH MEAN TO ME?
PASSING THE TORCH implies that we are light-bearers and that we must not only “let our light shine before me”.  We have a duty to transmit light, to shed light wherever we go, and to pass it on.
Pass it on so that others, especially future generations may see their way, back in time and into the future.
Pass it on so that others may not lose their way, nor lose their focus.
It also implies that life is a journey, a race that we have to run, but that we cannot run forever.  One day, one day we must finish our race and our course, we must let it go and Let God take over.  We must pass on to our successors the best that we have received, our light, our spark, and we must pass it on while it is hot, vital, vibrant, radiant, and not when it is cold and soggy.
It also implies personal hand to hand, face to face encounter, contact, interfacing. Flesh must touch flesh when we are passing on our legacy.
What are some of the best things we must pass on and how?   Among the things to be passed on are our faith, our values, the things that make us tick, our spirit.
We do this by the way we live, by our contact with others, living not to ourselves nor for ourselves, but communicating, interfacing, interceding for others so that on departing, we shall leave “footprints in the sands of time”.
After departing, others will do things “in remembrance of us”
The Jews have understood extremely well what it means to pass the torch.
They have understood and practiced to a fine degree home education and training, they have realized that it is a sacred, parental privilege and duty to teach their children their faith, their salvation history.  If you have any doubts about the secret of Jewish persistence and intellectual ascendancy, read (Deuteronomy 11 verses 19-21, 25, and Psalm 78 verses 1-8).
When and how we teach – around the dining table, around the wash tub  -  that’s where my mom taught me to sing many of the hymns  I still know by heart, hymns that gave me sound theology in verse.
Where else and where else – as you plait and braid the children’s hair – you instill virtues of patience, long-suffering, kindness,  beauty.  In the parang band, grandpa passes on to the grandson the love of music, the art of playing instruments, the practice of visiting and home hospitality and the theology of the incarnation, the Virgin birth, the simple caring family man- Joseph.
Yes, pass it on we must.  What we do not pass on we can’t take with us when we leave this world.  To pass on the torch is to invest in succession planning.
Daphne  G.  Cuffie.”

My Dear Mausicans,
Twelve years ago,  I asked Mrs. Cuffie to respond to the question, "What does passing the torch mean to me?" I intend to include her response in my third book entitled "Passing The Torch".
Mrs. Cuffie replied promptly with the attached gem which I am happy to share with you because I eh know wen ah go finish writing dis book.
As a matter of fact, if yuh want tuh  get your response included in meh book, just send a succinct reply, 120 words or less.
Aye, Felix and Finbar, Pierrot Grenades, yuh hear big word.  Ah want allyuh tuh spell dat word at de Reunion.
By de way, I was dey in 1988 at Valsayn Teachers College. Yuh remember wen dey lose current. Dat was de year wen T&TEC use tuh have plenty "brown out".

I have attended and enjoyed all of them. It is a time for rejuvenation of the spirit and meeting new folks all the time…..meeting brothers and sisters you forgot existed…The forgetting thing serious these days…..Pat (Monserrat), I hope yuh remember me this time…We first met at the Valsayn Reunion (don’t ask what year).

RE: Big Apple Mausica Reunion 2011

2011-Mar-25-0537Hrs
Dear Fellowmembers,
Greetings........Helloooooooo.......Hear ye! Hear ye!.....  The Reunion is still on, people!!
The Planning Committee is hoping to receive an "avalanche" of responses in the coming weeks.
Pioneers, we were hoping that you would set the pace here , especially if we wish to keep this Reunion affair going!   Whatshappening?
If you are interested in accommodation at the Long Island Marriott, we are in the process of acquiring a group rate with the hotel but we must secure at least 10 bookings. So far , we have only 3 requests. I will forward a group code as soon as this is acquired.
Members have been asking if all the money should be paid at once. We are willing to work with everyone so we would be happy if you send in the registration fee and indicate on page 3, the events in which you wish to participate. In so doing, we would have a clearer indication when making reservations.
We are working relentlessly to have a great Reunion but we need your cooperation.
Thanks to those who have sent in their payments. We assure you of a super duper time in New York.
Take "advantage" of this stage!!!!
With warm wishes,
The Planning Committee

Hello Errol,
Hope you had a good time in TNT
A.s usual ,
Rodney
My Fellow Mausiccans.
There is still time to register to attend the 2011 Reunion in New York. If yuh use  tuh enjoy formal dinners and dem big fete we use tuh have in Mausica, den yuh would have ah real good time at de Reunion.
Marjorie and I have been attending since de first one in 2003 at De Center of Excellence, Jack’s place. Joey Lewis and Alisford had de place jumping . Then followed Toronto in 2005, Tobago in 2007 and Grenada in 2009. Each one was great.
Here are some reasons why I attend the reunions:
1. I t like ah big family reunion.
2. Ah big Thanksgiving.
3. Ah time tuh hug and kiss yuh pardnahs.
4. Ah time tuh meet and greet other members of the Mausica family.
5. Ah time tuh reminisce and give thanks to those who had de vision tuh create Mausica.
I’ll stop at #5 today. I encourage those who have attended any Mausica reunion to add their fond memories to the list.
Let’s keep the list going until July.
Looking forward to seeing you in New York.
As usual,
Rodney

Hello Errol,
I want to encourage my fellow Mausicans who will be attending  Reunion 2011 and who have a product or service that they would like to inform attendees about to contact me or Buzzie.
I suggested that we have a Networking Center and the committee agreed.
Therefore, Mausican entrepreneurs let's take advantage of this opportunity to promote our businesses.
In Grenada, I met Felix Edinborough, Anna Maria  Mora and Farida Chapman who volunteered their services and talents to my book signing at NALIS. The event was great.
On another topic, registration time was extended so there is still time to join the lime. Once you attend a reunion, you wouldn't want  to miss the next one. Dat NY group could throw ah good fete.
DJ Scobie could real jam. Ah hope Alisford walking wit a few Mausica standards: Walk Away from Love and Guantanamera and some Joey hits. Cassanova and Ancil too.! Fellas ah need some help. Plenty woman tuh dance wit. By de way, is on ah university campus wit dorms an ting so perhaps if yuh lucky yuh might get ah chance tuh play some "chess". Red Guards, Glory Guys come leh we fete .

I look forward to receiving your newsletters and will provide such info as may come to my attention. Best wishes,

RE: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2011-FEB-25-1009Hrs
Hi Errol,
How are you?  Thanks for all the info etc. via email.  I'm not sure how many people are going from the Toronto area to the Big Apple reunion and what is the planned means of communication from Toronto to NY. However, I've been informed that Mega Bus who partners with Coach USA has a coach that goes to NY daily from Toronto.  It's comfortable and reliable.  As well, the fares range from $1 to $16 one way.  Sounds impossible, especially in light of the rediculous fares by plane.  Interested parties could either phone 1-877-462-6342 or check the web site: MegaBus.com for more info.  The earlier we book the cheaper it would be.
Take care.  Inspite of the snow today, spring is coming.
All the best,
Magnell Williams Robinson

Please post ASAP..Thanks.
My FellowMausicans,
In response to requests regarding the accommodation, we have been informed by Hofstra University that they can arrange for individuals who wish to come earlier and leave later. Cost will be based on the number of nughts facility is used.
In addition, Hofstra will have staff available for those who arrive as early as 6 am. We must inform them in advance if anyone plans to arrive earlier than 9am.
There are ten more days to the deadline, February .14th. The responses are slow in coming in. Just to let you know that a registered letter from Trinidad takes roughly eleven days to get here.
Please, Mausicans, lets be serious about this REUNION. We,on the Planning Committee, must make commitments and we are at a standstill without your commitment.
Hoping to receive an avalanche of commitments after this email...

Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2011-FEB-01-0114Hrs
Hello  Errol
Please share these thoughts
Rodney (narrator) and Marjorie (typist)

MUSTS
There are several “Musts” I must do whenever I visit  Sweet TNT:  kiss up meh mudder and  other family members, visit   Tunapuna Market and buy pork and  beef from Pa Liverpool  and his two sons,  drink plenty  coconut water and suck mango,  buy black pudding for meh wife, Marjorie,  buy doubles from de “Dancin  Doubles Man”,  attend church at St Mary’s  Anglican  Church  in Tacarigua  and either call or visit  Mrs. Cuffie.
By far, one of de most exciting musts is ah visit with Mr.  Williams  de Warden ,  Fitzie.     At 90 plus,   Mr.  Williams remains one of   the  most  influential and  amazing   people in my life.  He is a storehouse of knowledge   which he is willing to   share  in his modest style.  During my last visit,  he informed me that he attended QRC  and was also the youngest students to enter Government Teacher’s College in POS.   He also knew Sir Ellis Clarke  who attended St Mary’s College  and rode a racing  bike  to school.   Mr.  Williams   thinks that a fitting tribute to  Sir Ellis Clarke would be a sculpture of a young man riding  a racing bike.   The caption should read  “The Boy Who Became President.”
Mausicans,  there are several opportunities available  in Trinidad and Tobago.   Recording the memories of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most  brilliant  educators  is one of them.  Therefore, my friends,  let’s  visit the Warden armed with all the modern recording devices.     It will be time well spent.
Aye,  Marjorie, talkin  bout time,  look what time it is – one o’clock -.  Time tuh sleep.  Leave de rest fuh. next time.
Rodney Foster
