RE: Phillip Kendall

2013-Sep-13-1454Hrs
Dear Errol:
This is going to be rambling, reflecting my state of mind, just having one hour ago witnessed the burial of my fellow Havenite Phillip Kendall. Earlier in the day I had written something on this blog, then I sent a private note to Rodney Foster who was in Phil's year group and is also a Havenite. I found the photograph that Cliff Bertrand had sent years ago, showing him looking no more than 18.
As I was walking to the big tree, behind the stands in the Center of Excellence where the cemetery lies, and under which our brother has found his resting place, I found myself disagreeing with the lady with whom I was walking, about her assertion that death has no sting.
If there was no sting in death, why was I feeling so absolutely empty about this passing.  Why should I privilege the hereafter, over life above ground,  where people make their mark as fathers, teachers, mothers, lawyers, priests, whatever.
If the real action in life comes after death, what then is the whole point of life here on earth??
My own view is that it is possible that death is such a fearsome thing, that it is better to employ reverse psychology where it is concerned. Pretend it is no big deal to die. Where is thy sting? After death is supposed to come this phase of eternal life, where my soul assumes primacy, my soul which will live forever.
You know the song that Cuffie and the warden taught us "Death Oh, Death oh mi lawd, when ah mi body lay down in the grave then ah me soul goin jump for joy".
Why are we so dismissive of life itself, this wonderful gift that we get to be born into this world. Why cant we accept that we each have finite time on this stage, to walk onto at birth and to say our lines until the curtain draws, and we become dust. Is it that we want to go on forever, and this myth has to become our creed?
I think we will treasure life more, if we privilege it as the gift we have gotten, rather than its absence. It is while we are on earth that we should make our contributions. Here and now.
There is for me a sting in death. I saw them lower a box and within it was our brother Phillip Kendall, and I am happy that I got to see him drop his lyrics, do his thing, on this side of earth. If he is able to rise up from where he lies in a form as the faithful say, I think he would be deserving, but for me, what I can say, is that while in this world, he used his given talents.
I am not sure what these words make me, perhaps some kind of non-believer, but before the white man kidnapped my ancestors, they had their own ways of dealing with death, and it was to band dey belly and bawl. Happy land of Canaan is something they were taught out here.
I find death to be undesirable, and to possess a painful sting. I still miss my mother.  I think that just in case there is nothing after, except bones, and finally dust, we should all redouble our efforts, to maximise the talents we got at birth, trying to make the earth above ground a better place, while we are here.
I was happy that I knew Phillip Kendall, and that I was there for a period in his life, when I saw him perform to the fullest of his talents, in days long before the ravages of chronic disease took hold of him. I was sad, not happy, to represent Haven, as they let him down, in what looked to me to be a quite final fearsome process.
I don't think we should taunt death by asking it where is it sting. Let sleeping dogs lie
We have to decide if a roll is going to be called up yonder, or if before that roll call, us humans would find earth to be increasingly uninhabitable, as the sun takes its toll, and earth could not longer support life.

RE: Mausica.

2013-Sep-13-1058Hrs
Let me please, beg your indulgence, in lecturing all of you who read this blog.
There is a history that I was asked to help with, I did most of the work with the help of Joy Valdez, Pat Allum Ryan, and with contributions from Rodney Foster, Gwendolyn's tribute to Harry Joe at his funeral and others  that I cannot recall now typing from memory. Cover was designed, a picture of Harry Joe and the Cuff sent, from my group picture of 1968.
All of this was sent to AnnaMaria and Joy, for my 72nd. Birthday, March 27th. All thta was needed was printing. I know "Copy ready" I have two novels out.
That nothing came of it shows a lack of something. We have lots of words, putting out money to help bring this book to fruition was what was lacking.
That was point one.
We talk a lot of "family". Are we lying to ourselves?
When my brother died in New Jersey, in 2004, we had an older cousing living in a nursing home, who would have been inconsolable, if she only Heard that he had died. We got permission to "borrow" her from the nursing home, so she could attend the graveside service, and say goobye to this son of Williamsville. We had to be sure that we had a medical doctor or other health staff nearby. Fortunately, one of my nephews Dr. Adebanji Alabi, who was working in Sando at the time, was going to be at the funeral, as well as four of my sisters who are nurses, and one retired nurse. We got all the paperwork done, so this aged woman could say goodbye. This, I remind you, was the third death we were coping with in 17 days.
My cousin from Boston, driving to the funeral, arrived late. They were beginning to close the casket at the church. (Funeral officials are so bombastic, they behave as if its their dead.) Well my cousin is one of those solidly built African men who show no trace whatever of any other bloodlines. I insisted as the senior relative, that he be allowed to see my brother. The director looked at Felix's wife, and I stared them down. They reopened the coffin. What my cousin said still brings tears as I type this."This man , this son of our soil, did not come to America to die.(at 51) He came seeking a better life for his fmily, but death found him. We have to give a soldier's send off to this son of our soil.(He had been a police officer). My cousin unfurled a six foot  Trinbago flag, draped my brother's coffin in it, and saying another prayer of dismissal, we proceeded to the hearse and the cemetery. That, is what family does, in my opinion.
Now, for all the talk of Fitzy and the Cuff, could someone, or two people not have  arranged to have them come to Mausica, even by ambulance, for that section of the celebrations? That would have added years to their lives, and meaning, and they would have known they were loved.
It is how we treat the living ancestors that define our values.
Now, I'll get down off my soapbox, and go fix my breakfast.

RE: Way Solid from?

2013-Sep-13-0925Hrs
Now This is a real problem. Just as I was thinking that Rodney was correct, and Solid Seven from de coconut in Aranguez, abandoning my thought that they from Point, we now here that they really from La Brea!. But me, Geezmo, Clydee and others went to a Solid fete in Point, and the people was getting on like if Solid from right dey. So dat is why I was thinking originally dat maybe Solid from Point, but then again the fete was by the savannah at the big corner, and now I am thinking we might have been in La Brea and not Point. What do you call the place where the road is in a hole, and all the houses kilkatay, because of tectonic movement of pitch....is that Point or La Brea?

It has now dawned on me that I have not thanked you for the Mausica updates. Thank you. When I saw the time it was sent, at 3.40 am, I said this is a true committed fellowman. My name was Ann Francois in Mausica (69-71). My I.D has the name Valerie Ann Gilbert now. Bye for now.
Thanks again for keeping me in touch.

RE: Phillip Kendall

The death of Phillip Kendall is very very hard to take. This man had more life in him than most people I know. He was a natural athlete, a specimen, chiseled by god. He was one of the bright lights in the haven when I got there in 1967. A very pleasant personality. I played with him on the 67-68 football team, along with Geezmo (Kent Rennie), Efebo (in goal), Joe Ragoonansingh, Darnley Gittens, Gerry Hernandez, Frederick Beckles Deceased), Carlsbury Gonzales, Gregory Byrnes, Roy Jagroopsingh (deceased), Dave Didier, Nazir Khan, Ho Sing Loy.
Phil was graceful on the football field...delightful to watch.
I will never forget the quartermile on sports-day 1967-68 when he and Geezmo dueled to the tape, he coming out the victor.
Why is death so cruel?
In inter-training college sports I was on the track team with him when we ran the other colleges into oblivion.
In the weekly blog of Friday, 28 August, 2009, we see a beautiful picture of the track team, with Phil standing next to Geezmo. Errol I wonder if you could re-post  the pictures of that day? He is next to last in the top picture, and fourth in the one in which the runners are kneeling.
Cliff Bertrand may have published it and I wonder if he could do that again.
Phil, I will miss watching you play ping pong, watching you play football, and watching you run. There was never born a more graceful athlete, and a more effervescent soul.
This man was one of the Haven originals, quiet, thoughtful, energetic.
Gone too soon.

I regret to inform the Mausica community of the passing of Phillip Kendall. He participated in the NY reunion and had already finalized plans for participating in the 2013 reunion when he suffered a bilateral stroke on May 20th, from which he did not recover. He subsequently died on August 28th in NY.
The funeral service is scheduled to take place in Trinidad on Friday 13th Sept at 10.00am at the Church of the Nazarene, Mooniram Street, St James followed by burial at the Tunapuna Cemetery. Condolences are extended to his family. May he rest in peace.

Hi Melvina,
You are correct - Solid Seven was a La Brea group.  Two of my cousins were members of the band.  Sorry I missed seeing you at the march, yes we would have reminisced about Mausica if we had me.

A Disturbing Silence
Aye, Scratchy, yuh bring tears tuh meh eyes. How yuh bright so? How yuh coud write so? No wonder yuh is ah doctah. Keep up de insightful commentary and analyses.
However, ah cocksure Cox from de Coconut and I from Barataria.
Yes, my Havenite Brother, Fitzy mastered the power of Silence.
I remember one night I was involved in a rumble in the foyer outside HMJ Hall. Out of de blue, Fitzy appeared. Just looked at de crowd. Didn’t utter one word. Disappeared faster than he had appeared. De crowd melted away. And dat was de end of de confrontation.
Yes man , Mr Williams was ah real genius.
Ancil, students do check on Mr. Williams via phone and visits. Maureen Warner provides food daily, and my elders, Donald Walker and Angela and Trevor Ifill keep in close contact with him.
I visited Mr. Williams after the reunion. I am not afraid of most dogs. I talk to the three dogs, pothounds, as I enter the gates and never turn my back on them.
Did somebody say , “Dog doh bite dog.”?
On a more serious note. Both Mrs. Cuffie and Mr. Williams’ conditions are reflections of the times in which we live. They raise serious concerns about care for the elderly and about our preparation for those days.
Therefore, I suggest that we engage in these discussions now and formulate action plans to address them.
By the way, one of my batch mates stands ready to make a financial contribution to the Mausica Foundation. It would be an excellent testimony of “Living The Legacy” and “Leaving A Legacy”.
Sincere condolences to all the bereaved families. Brother Philip Kendall, may you rest in peace.
As usual,

RE: Wey you from, who is you fadder some thoughts..

2013-Sep-06-1321Hrs
Friends:
Theodore Lewis's comment about people not admitting where they are from, was not only a Mausica problem, but a worldwide problem.
It stems from the traditional arrogance of city folk, which caused country folk, unless you were the landed gentry, to fumble the information about where they were from.
The Romans were the first, I found who looked down at the presumably unlettered folks from the hinterland.
The hinterland, the countryside, the bush was where people lived whose business was to feed the city folks who knew "Book larnin" but nothing else, presumably.
When I was a student at the Government Teachers' College, 1961-62, we had a brilliant sociologist named deWilton Rogers, who had crossed back into who he was, long before it was fashionable. One day, he asked who knew how to make bake. I put my hand up. I was in a front area seat. I heard some tittering. I looked around, mine was the only hand up. The Tobago delegation, that included people named Gibbs, Caesar, Nicholson and Gittens, not a hand went up. The Sangre Grande people, the Chaguanas people, the Point and Sando people did not know how to make bake. I lowered my hand to Mr. Rogers' saying there was one  honest person in the house.
Today bake has been rehablitated. It took a while.
On the east coast of the US we had some friends with whom we went to the annual Kappa dance. They were from Tennessee. In making conversation, since the woman was my school colleague, and our husbands were going along, George  asked where Bill was from. He said Memphis. His wife chipped in "Just a short mule ride from Memphis". He husband was irate. Memphis was the closest town. The short mule ride indicated a one horse town, where the poor blacks rode mules. With his PhD and DuPont job, Bill was not going to admit that he was from some one-horse town that was off the map.
Trinis also love to ask"who is your father again?" My response has always been "A country farmer. You would not know him."When we moved to Arima, I was fourteen, there was the family of Vincent Edwards living in a well to do house near the Catholic church. People wanted to associate me with them.
I later began saying"I am a Williams from Williamsville on my father's side, and an Eccles from Ecclesvillage on my mother's side." if we were well enough known to have two villages bearing our family names, people thought it was ok to be from the country.
My mother stayed in a miserable marriage, because she repeatedly said she did not want to be like those women who point to a man passing in the street, who did not even say hello, and say "Look you father passing dey, yes."
Dr. Eric Williams, of blessed memory, abolished illigitimate as a statement on a child's birth certifcate, and gave all offspring equal inheritance rights, but he could not eliminate the stigma of being considered a country bookie, or the child hearing his father say "She say you is mine, but I ent seeing no traces of me anywhere. I still looking."
Keep well, and preserve the memories.

I add my congratulations to Earl Knights aka  "Flip Wilson".  I remembered how he and Vernella entertained the students who did not go home on weekends on the piano in the HMJ Hall.
I am saddened at the passing of Adelia' mom.  I knew her before Mausica.  Henson (TTT Programme Director) and I attended Harmon's School of SDA and during the holidays I spent many days up at Grenadian Hill in Belle Garden at the Bovells.  She will be greatly missed.  She was a stalwart in the development of Belle Garden as an outstanding village in Tobago and Trinidad.  We cannot forget the wonderful children she mothered.  Adelia, Henson, Justus, Joseph and the others whose names escape me at this time I offer you this quote:  "Don't grieve as a people without hope."  There is a great Reunion coming.  We'll meet the dearly departed again in the sweet by and by.  I love you.

RE: Ancil Knights' comment re Fitzy

2013-Sep-06-0841Hrs
Our brother Ancil Knights makes a fair comment about the collective silence regarding Fitz-James Williams, when contrasted with the euphoria that has attended the 50th anniversary celebrations. He asks whether the alumni are hard hearted, or whether we are ungrateful?
I do not blame Ancil for writing like that. To not think about Fitzy (and the Cuff) while commemorating the birth of Mausica 50 years ago would indeed be akin to being blind to the presence of the elephant sitting in the living room. If someone introduces the Pips, the obvious response has to be yes  "but what about Gladys Knights?
But I can offer a third hypothesis to be considered along go with the Ancil offers  and it is that silence often communicates in ways that words cannot. For example, during our return to the campus as part of the celebrations, when we once again went to the assembly,  Rodney Foster called for a brief period of silence, in memory of the many lively souls who once lent their presences to that space, in the absolute peak of their youths, and at the height of their powers. And anyone who was there knows that that period of silence said more than we ever could about those bright lights, now extinguished.
And we saw what that silence masked, when Rodney, in an inspired and unscripted revelatory moment, in the middle of that silence, asked for people to say aloud the name of a fallen Mausican, and there was then this incredible outpouring of names, names of the dead. I heard about forty, and I myself shouted out Yvone Fitz-Andrews! Horatio Hospedales! I could have gone on, Kenneth Bobb, Ken Parmasad, "Toco," Martin Brathwaite, "Psychee, "
It was painful. But that outburst of names is what was beneath the silence.
Silence is not nothingness. It is in fact a kind of speech.
Try to exclude Fitzy from the story of Mausica if you can.
I was once cursing profusely in the downstairs corridor of Fair Haven, and when I looked down that corridor at the top of it, there was a bald-headed man, with what looked like a group of visitors being brought unannounced to have a look at the place. I found a way to melt into the walls of the hostel, as he artfully guided the guests away. I heard from that tour guide about this event shortly after, with a wry smile on his face, and I have heard from him about that event many times over the decades. He has that on me. I should have been at least wearing clothes he said. Cursing like that.
Silence is speech. And in the circumstances, far from ungratefulness, or hardness of heart, my own reading of our silence regarding this man is that it was perhaps the most eloquent and respectful way to grieve. We reserve silence for reverence.

Hi Errol,
Good to read about Mausica and Mausicans every week. What about documentation of our history?  About Fitzie, I phoned him and read the poem I did  for the concert and he appreciated it. He asked for a copy which I promised faithfully to deliver, but I have been so busy travelling to Miami and elsewhere. I  just got back from Antigua and am getting ready to go to The Bahamas and Barbados, so I have not yet fulfilled my promise. I am going to print it and put it in my bag and pass in at his home in Tunapuna sometime within the next few days before I leave again.
Have a great week all.And Errol, thanks a million for keeping us in touch with one another.

PS. I am not at all happy about what I have been reading and hearing about early  childhood education and how the teachers are being treated so unfairly. I intend to air my views publicly on the matter as soon as I get a chance..

Dear Errol,
The hardest thing about growing old is the fading memory. As I wait for the weekly blog, I am trying to remember  the calypso that got me into the calypso finals in 1969. Everyone remembers the calypso Mamas without Papas  that got me into trouble but not the calypso that put me into the finals. I was the only first Year i to make the finals with a calypso entitled: They refuse to choose a beautiful MSC. Kelvin Subran and I had lost the student council elections and I made a calypso on that .I recall the chorus was:
They refuse to choose a beautiful MSC
Just look at we
An MSC whose members were not nuts,
Just look at us
An MSC whose members were full of charm
Not of them could beat back Kelvin Subran.
There are so many happy memories of Mausica  I do hope we can have some mini reunions in between. We are always sharing sad news so let me share some happy news about my daughter's wedding in Miami last month, Here are a couple of photos. She had an African ceremony and a Catholic wedding.

Are we so hard hearted or ungrateful? Sorry to sound so harsh or correct me if I'm wrong. I honestly thought that on your way to Mausica he would have been surprised with a visit from such a  great amount of his children.May God truly help us.....

RE: Typo corrected...

2013-Aug-29-2355Hrs
Dear Erroll:
In one of the attachments from last week my Haven brother and second year elder Rodney Foster corrected me on the question where was Leroy Cox from.  I said he was from Point, because Geezmo from down there, and I associate Cox with the Geez. But now Rodney saying Cox from the coconut in San Juan. Dat is where Rodney from too. So he trying to claim Cox. But the problem there is that in one of the recent general elections dey find that a 1000 people had given a house in San Juan as their address. So it is possible that a man has a San Juan address, but he really from Point. And indeed Solid Seven was from Point, and it is dem who made Cox' tune a hit. And of course Geez used to bring dem to play in fetes. So this is a complicated matter. if Solid Seven playing your tume.....you from point. Otherwise dey would not play your tune. You see the logic?
By the way, with Mausicans  my experience is that it is difficult to know where they are from once they get on campus, especially the girls. And in 1968 after observing that many of the girls who came in with me in 67 were experiencing geographic identity issues, I decided to make a calypso about it. Solid did not record it, because the tune was suspect, but the lyrics communicate this problem of misplaced geography. The Calypso,  called 'The change", got me third place (Behind Efebo, and Gregory Byrne, from Point).
Kenneth Bobb on piano ( I miss him, a real live wire), Efebo on cuatro, along with Clang (Cuthbert Joseph) and Carl Caton, (who sang this verse for me at the college when we met there recently). Alisford on bass. (who else).

First verse and chorus, as follows:
Mausica Teachers College does change people
Dont doubt me, I am put- tin it to you
When de girls and dem come een here,  some ah dem cah even walk in shoe
In less than a month, yuh know dey doh want to talk to you!

Chorus
Well dey come to Mausica, from Talparo and Moruga
As dey reach in here dey from Arima!!
But I see one in shanty town,Picking up rotten ham
She want to tell me, She looking for specimen for Dukhan

Now I want to apologize to all of the Mausica women of 1966-68, and 1967-69  for that song. Harry Joe called me once and said , Scratchy! what happen boy, yuh doh like de girls? And he had this quizzical look. And I laughed and said Mr Joseph  I like dem---But some ah dem doh talk to me!!

RE: Commemorative March on Washington

2013-Aug-29-1934Hrs
As I prepared to walk in Martin Luther King's footsteps to commemorate the march on Washington  which occurred 50 years ago, I remembered my struggles almost  50 years ago when I left Mausica and started teaching.  The staff I joined was lackluster in their welcome, because I was one of "those young upstarts from Mausica". One teacher said, " Mausicans have all these new teaching methods and fancy ideas". That was one criticism.  The tension got worse when after the first month salaries were increased and "the young upstarts" were earning the same as experienced teachers.  Fortunately, Mennen Walker was also assigned to the same school and together we stuck to the principles of excellence and commitment that we learnt at Mausica.  That was the start of a friendship that has lasted almost 50 years. Our most recent reunion was also the celebration of a milestone, as we celebrated something that was never done before in Trinidad and Tobago - co-ed residential teacher education.   As I silently thanked Dr. King, I also gave thanks to Mausica for setting the foundation for the person that I am.

And to Kay.  Thanks for sharing your experiences of the reunion, especially the visits to Mausica, and San Fernando.  Some how it came as a surprise to know that you had attended Naps. I guess I just lost sight of that, somehow.  Obviously this was not the reunion to miss, albeit unavoidable.  God Bless!!! Joy.

I'm just beginning to catch up on my Mausica mail. My new email address for those who may need it, is joygrand2@gmail.com.  From all reports the reunion was great!  So sorry that I could not have attended. Esmond Francois, my especial friend, it was so good to make that connection through your letter, and visit to "Ma Cuff."  You and Barbara were obviously sent there by God that very day.  We are all grateful for what you were able to do for her, in alleviating her discomfort.  And the knowledge that you could impart to us of knowing that you were leaving her to the care of her brother, was comforting news indeed. Thank you so much. And just in case you still do not know who this is - I'm Joy Marshall, married name, Barnes.  I cannot think of you by any other name than Esmond!!  We go way back, including that year I was in Toronto. God Bless!!!  Oh, and is Barbara, my friend from San Fernando?  Very fondly, Joy.

RE: Light A candle

2013-Aug-28-0032Hrs
"THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON
Tomorrow, August 28th, Mausicans , let’s all light a candle in remembrance of that historic march in 1963.
MTC opened its doors in 1963.
What effect did the Civil Rights Movement in the United States have on the newly independent Trinidad and Tobago, in the years leading up to our independence on August 31st, 1962?.
I believe that the dreamers, the visionaries, who created Mausica Teachers College were influenced significantly by Martin Luther King and the Movement.
Would historians like Linda Edwards Romain, Efebo, Mervyn Sandya nd my batch mate, Linda Heywood., please enlighten us? Tell us about Stokely Carmichael’s role and those of other Caribbean contributors to “The Dream”.
On occasions like these, I wish that more Mausicans  were still in the classrooms.
However, our job is not over yet. Reunion 2013, was a recommitment to our motto, “Moulding A Nation Through Service”  and now  “Living The Legacy”.
I had the distinct pleasure of attending two of the many meetings of the planning committee: one at the Center of Excellence and the other at Claudina’s home in Bonaire.(Good Sunday food on a weekday)!  Hats off to all the planners.
Chairperson, Maria Mora., deserves a special award, She has chaired or co-chaired two reunions in TNT: 2003 and 2013 and consulted on four others: 2005 in Toronto, 2007 in Tobago, 2009 in Grenada and 2011 in New York. Well done my Mausican  sister. You deserve an Oscar for distinguished service.

RE: Reunion 2013

2013-Aug-19-1313Hrs
Hi Kay,
Thanks for your kind words.  I stayed with the group in order to keep an eye on you all.  But just like Matron, I did not even know when some of you left the house - in the rain.  I heard that Mas Camp was too close to resist.  Thankfully, you all were rewarded for your efforts.
Mausica sisters and brothers,
A major benefit of staying with a group during a reunion, is that you have mini reunions.
In Tobago we had communal breakfasts (in night clothes).  We moved in and out of one anothers' rooms "borrowing" this or that, or just being a nuisance to the occupants.  We had a pyjama party aka. a night of nostalgia, when most people sang folk song after folk song.  (I noticed some people were singing while sleeping).  We racked our brains to remember the lyrics some of the time.  This was followed by our dancero Florence teaching the group the Electric Slide - some got it, some did not.  On Monday morning, while we waited for our transport to the ferry, there were some serious card games - slapping cards on the table as well.
In Trinidad we spent a lot of time chatting at breakfast, reliving the previous days' activities and wondering whether the dj and the patrons of Amnesia would let us get a few hours sleep.  Back in the day, we would have felt blessed to have our residence next to a club - how times have changed! Despite this we were always ready for the next days' activities, anxious to see what else was planned and to continue re-uniting with our Mausica family.
I met new family and celebrated the ones I had before.
Now everyone knows why I was so ecstatic every day.
A birdie told me we might be cruising together in 2 years.  I am available to assist with organising.  Mausican Gerry Callender is a cruise consultant.

RE: Special Update Re: Mrs. Cuffie

2013-Aug-17-2120Hrs
On Tuesday August 13'13, accompanied by Mrs. Cuffie's ever reliable care-giver and supporter--Babara Davis, we had a planned morning visit to Mrs. Cuffie, where she was a resident at the Anglican senior care 'All Saints Gordon Home', in New Town, P.O.S.
On arrival, we were shocked and alarmed to hear that, on just the previous Saturday (Aug.10), Mrs. Cuffie had to be rushed and transferred to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, on Charlotte Street.
With this information on hand, we hurried over to the hospital and did find Mrs. Cuffie lying alone, among other patients, in a hot, humid and crowded general hospital ward. Though lying alone and unattended on her hospital bed, Mrs. Cuffie was alert and generally responsive when we individually identified ourselves.
It was both disturbing and devastating seeing her lying there helplessly and obviously uncomfortable with the heat and humidty within the entire ward.
Not wanting to leave her in that state, and seeing that several other patients had the cooling comfort of a floor fan, I asked a ward nurse if a fan could also b provided for Mrs. Cuffie. The answer was that none was available.
Immediately, Babara and I decided to locate a fan for Mrs. Cuffie.
This we did, by returning to her in-resident room at the All Saints senior care home to collect a fan which was in her room over there, and transport it back to her Port-of-Spain general hospital bed side, for Mrs. Cuffie's exclusive use. (This was not a maverick action, because I did seek and receive the consent and permission of the ward supervisor.
At the end of our visit and on departing the hospital, much to our surprise, we encountered Mrs. Cuffie's closest relative and care-give--- her brother, who himself had just returned from a trip to Canada, only to hear, for the first time of his sister's predicament and being warded at the hospital.
We left with a better feeling that someone who has her interest and wellbeing at heart was now everpresent and close by, to supervise her daily care.
Your prayers for Mrs. Cuffie's recovery are enlisted.
We left Mrs. Cuffie in ward 22, 2nd. floor of P.O.S General hospital. When she is discharged, she will be returning to the much more comfortable All Saints Gordon Home' at 98 Woodford Street, New Town P.O.S. For personal enquiries at the Gordon Home, you can ask for the home's matron: Magaret Baptiste, Tel.No. 628-4670

RE: Demystifying A Name Change

2013-Aug-17-2017Hrs
On Day-1 of the recently staged Mausica alumni 50th. anniversary re-union, the I.D tag that was issued to me, identified me as 'Kelvin Francois' instead of the more familiar 'Esmond Francois'. This immediately gave rise to some questions, if not confusion. At the occasion, time and circumstances did not allow me the opportunity to explain and/or clarify the apparent name change. This, I will attempt to do now.
Throughout the entire phase of my Trinidad residency, through primary and secondary schooling, and proceeding to Teachers' Training College and residency, I was known and called 'Esmond Francois', with no other sobriquet. But in 1969, four years after graduating from Mausica T.T, a name change was initiated.
It was during the process of submitting my application to obtain Canada Landed Immigrant status, ultimately leading to citizenship.
Everything had to be supportd by official documents, and it was the first time that I actually acquired and saw my original birth certificate which showed that my real first name was 'Kelvin' whereas 'Esmond' was my middle name.
Henceforth, since my emigration to Canada, and for the 44 years that I have thus far lived up here, all of my social and business interactions and associations, have been under my actual and official first name--'Kelvin'. ( Now you know).
Family , close friends, relatives and my Mausica brethren still comfortably and dearingly call me 'Esmond' or the shortened--'Es.'
Which do I prefer? It does not really matter, so long as any salutation is done with civility and respect.
Sincerely,
Kelvin, Esmond Francois (aka, Es.) 65

RE: Mausica Reunion 2013

2013-Aug-17-1251Hrs
I join my collegues in congratulating the planning committee on an awesome reunion. Based on the magnitude of the undertaking, it was fun-filled, very well executed and a resounding success, a product of good preparation and teamwork.
The turbulent waters on the ride to Tobago did not dampen the Mausica spirit.  After some R&R we were ready to renew old acquaintances and make new ones.
I was impressed by the youth at the Sunday service, and noted a few things that I can implement at my place of worship.
The visit to Mausica was both nostalgic and depressing however, I am encouraged by the enthusiasm shown when Alan Clovis announced that we should purchase the facility. Let's come together and make it happen.
At Valencia I had the opportunity to partner with Marlene and play a game of All Fours (I had not played since 1970) and also engage a few partners in table tennis which I had not played since I left Mausica in 1966.
The South day was very memorable (no bias because my roomate Joan was a part of the planning committee). Being on the hill reminded me of my high school days at Naparima Girls' and passing through La Brea reminded me of my childhood and teaching days at Brighton E.C.
There was a different vibe and the music that greeted us as we stepped off the maxis, set the tone for the beach lime. The fish broth was a perfect end to a perfect day.
Thanks also to my roommates and house mates in Tobago and Trinidad. Your fun-loving spirit and your mere presence added to my wonderful reunion experience.
A special thank you to my big sister and dear friend Brenda who organized our accommodation and co-ordinated our eats for our stay in Tobago and Trinidad. She is so thoughtful that she even stayed with us in Trinidad although she could have stayed (for free) elsewhere. Brenda, I thank you, you are one of a kind.
Let us keep the Mausica spirit alive!!!!!

RE: Death of The Mother of Franklin and Arnim Philip

2013-Aug-16-1504Hrs
Dear Errol,
It is with great sadness that I share with the Mausica family news that the mother of Franklin('71-73) and Arnim(72-74) Philip passed away this morning. For those of you who know us, know that they have become over the years, our "real'family. Franklin and his family are our neighbours, as well as we are 'compere'and 'macomere' for different children in our two families. Our children have grown up together and our bonds are strong. We truly love and care for each other and all branches of both families have deeply connected. In addition Howard, Franklin, Arnim, Denzil, Annette Hunte-Lessey are all members of a group called "Friends Helping Friends" - a group which they formed some years ago. We feel their pain.
As we grieve with them,we just want to extend our love to them and to remind them how much we care.

Thanks to Errol, Claire Creese and the rest of the organizing committee for the re union. For some months we were uneasy, awaiting this week and wondering whether we would share in the cocktails etc. without going to Tobago.
But alas, all's well that ends well.
I enjoyed the one activity and event that I was able to attend. It was just wonderful meeting old friends some of whom I may not have recognized in the road. It took me a while to even identify some there.
Please forgive me if I did not recognize anyone of the Mausicans.

"Where Do We Go From Here?
Reunion 2013 was a blessed experience. Congratulations and sincere thanks to the  organizers and all the attendees who contributed to its resounding success. It was vintage Mausica.
To me every day was special. The Registration at Mt Irvine Bay Hotel on 7/19 was a good kickoff. What a fantastic turn out! Over a   hundred registrants! Saturday’s Ole Time wedding in Moriah was both educational and entertaining.   Sunday’s service at the Canaan- Bon Accord Methodist Church showed that “My God Is Able”. An inspirational service followed by a scrumptious Sunday-food brunch was awesome.
We had to take a rest on Monday.  Tuesday at Valencia Eco-Park was relaxing. More good food, fellowshipping, communing with Mother Nature, ole talking and networking. Wednesday’s “Return To Mausica” reinforced  the messages in the theme of “Reunion 2013”, “Living the Legacy”.  Nothing in life is permanent. Therefore, we must make our contributions now. We must give thanks to those on whose shoulders we stand. Tomorrow others will stand on ours.
On Thursday, July 25th, we headed Sando and deep South. After a  tasty breakfast at San Fernando Hill, we departed for Point. Joan, Claire, Cutty, Geezmo,(Kent Rennie), Gregory Byrne and the rest of the Point Posse had promised good Southern hospitality. They delivered above expectations. A good rhythm section, steelband music by “FUCSDAT”, the acronym for Friends United to Conquer and Surmount Disaster and Tribulations, a DJ that was jamming tunes to make you dance, plus delicious food and drinks made  Point the top contender for the “Best Day” crown.
Friday night at the Hyatt was a night of pure elegance, reminiscent of a Mausica formal dinner. Decorator,  Ms. Gormandy, used Mausica’s  colors, red and white, in combination with gold and green to transform the hall into a beautiful banquet hall. The Marcelle brothers of Kalyan fame provided enchanting dining music. DJ Philo and son, Orion,  played  tunes  that had Mausicans on their feet all night. They saved Samba Pa Ti for the penultimate tune of the night. Couples danced and fell in love again.  Yuh shoulda see Joan and Mr. Braithwaite, Alisford and  Claudette, and , of course, me and Marjorie. Then they had us chipping to the slow version of All Stars’ “Woman on D Bass”. If yuh see we. Like Jour Ouvert morning on Frederick Street. It was a fitting ending to a most memorable night.
On Saturday 27th.  several of us had a cool down fete at Gerry’s home in Claxton Bay. The DJ had us dancing everything. More good food,, drinks and fellowship. De lime was real good.
Thank you Gerry and family for a wonderful evening.
My fellow Mausicans, it’s 2:00 a.m in Atlanta. I’ll return to my question in my subject line later.  Jet lag setting in.  Ah gorn.
As usual,
Rodney Foster.

RE: Reunion 50

2013-Aug-13-2111Hrs
On behalf of the organizing committee, I want to thank the participants who contributed to making  Return to Mausica -  Nostalgia.  a success. The youth arm of Mausica, which Scratchy calls the ‘passion of Mausica’ gave marvelous performances.
Heather MacIntosh (Ruby Joseph ’71), Yohan Chucharee   (Patricia Kalloo ‘73), Ziggy Ranking   (Deanna Bowles ‘67) and Michelle Pilgrim (Yvonne Pilgrim pioneer).
Joan Kydd from alpha graduates made hearts flutter once more.
D’Alberto (Spouse - Marilyn Kangalee’74) showed us why he still performs in the UK
Mike Duncan ‘72 and Gilbert O’Connor ‘71(Happy)  came from Tobago just to delight us.
Hazel Thompson ‘70 and Fareida Chapman ‘66 took us back to times at Mausica by conjuring up different experiences.
Michael Gonzales ’79 (Dr. Chonkie Ting)  gave us his adult humour….They pack the audiences these days.
The evergreen Felix Edinborough gave us the ultimate Pierrot Grenade.
Last but not least the Hosts of the programme  Rodney Foster ’68 and myself, Finbar Ryan ‘72, ably supported by the sound system of DJ Philo (Alisford Phillips ’69).
I cannot omit Errol Lashley (pioneer and builder of the Mausica website) wearing his original Mayfair Mansion vest, which he has worn at every reunion. He also wore his Graduation Jacket at the gala dinner.
The camaraderie and warmth from all the persons who came home to Mausica was unbelievable. And of course, I also thank my brothers and sisters on the committee who all contributed wholeheartedly to the entire exercise of Reunion 50. It was an honor to serve.

Reunion 2013 continued in Toronto.  Winsley and Theresa hosted our annual Caribana Sunday lime on Aug. 4.  Though our group was small we viewed pictures from Reunion 2013 and those who attended, reminisced on the various activities and expressed appreciation for the thoughtfulness that went into the planning.  This year we had mainly ballroom dancing at our get together, I guess we were reliving those "Joey" days.
Just a reminder to anyone who might be in the Toronto area, please join us at our holiday party on November 30.

The Canadian Connection would like to thank the organizing committee of Reunion 2013 for putting together an awesome celebration - we lived the legacy in every event.  This was the longest running reunion with probably the largest overall attendance, so one could just imagine how challenging it was to bring this reunion to fruition.  It was heartwarming meeting and making friends and sharing the Mausica love all around.
Again, congratulations to everyone, because we all participated in making this a spectacular reunion.
Errol, thanks for continuing to be the “glue” in our family.  No one deserved that award more than you.

Hi Errol,
Thanks for adding my new email to the Weekly Blog.
It was great meeting you in the flesh and so many Mausicans at the well organized 50th Anniversary Mausica Reunion.
I sent in an earlier piece on my three years at Mausica. However on going back to Mausica, I realized I had actually spent Five years at Mausica. 1971 - 1973 Diploma in Teaching; 1973 - 1974 One year course in Teaching  Agriculture at the Junior Secondary School; 1987 - 1989 2 year Post Graduate Diploma in Agricultural Education - ECIAF/ATEC at the Mausica Campus. Re: Fwd: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2013-Aug-09-1625Hrs
Hello All,
It was indeed a pleasure re-uniting and re-kindling the spirit and synergy that made us all, MAUSICANS, whatever the year group or the experiences remembered and/or shared. The common thread however, is that after the two years at Mausica, we all left matured, as independent thinkers and with a determination to excel wherever we were planted. The good news is that we DID and continue to do so
It was great to meet and greet everyone those whom I knew and the new ones. I have come to the understanding, without knowing it then, that during my tenure through the corridors of the education system at all levels, those with whom I interacted and they were excellent at what they did were generally and invariably MAUSICANS. I salute you all.
However, the Reunion provided me with another realisation that age is really just a number and shared experiences and  memories especially the great ones are a potent uniting force.
I want to thank the Organising Committee for a splendid job. Well done. However, my heartfelt appreciation and love are extended to Anna- Maria Mora, Joan Braithwaite and Claudina Cudjoe who ensured that my husband and I were kept in the loop. Thanks again.
We look forward to the next Reunion 2015... Is it a boat cruise?
Blessings

RE: Death of Sampson Nathaniel

2013-Aug-09-1404Hrs
Dear Errol,
I was told by one of his in-laws, that a Mausican, Sampson Nathaniel, died suddenly about two weeks ago in Canada. I think he may have been a pioneer. I hope I got the first name correct. If the Canadian sed part of the Mausica family has more information can you please share. To his family, may God grant you, at this time and and always, the peace that can come only from Him.

The congregation of the Canaan-Bon Accord Methodist Church thanks the Mausican family who so graciously enhanced our worship experience on Sunday 21st. July 2013. I too did not know that Jasper Joefield could preach.  O what God can do with you when you allow Him to.  I thank the Lord for using me in making that part of the Reunion inspiring and soul-searching for us all.  May God continue to bless each Mausicn with good health and strength so that we may see each other in 2013.  A special thanks and best wishes to Anna Maria and the rest of the Organizing Committee.  God, bless us all.

RE: Mausica weekly emails

Yesterday I went to the celebration of the life of Castro the owner of a popular watering hole in Dabadie.
At the church I connected with  three Mausicans,   Sitram Sewlal who used to work in the kitchen, Roland Maundy Jr  and my roommate Eugene Macpherson.
Mac was dressed like someone out of an Isaac Hayes 1960’s/70’s museum……semi cowboy hat, wrap around shades, multicoloured checkered jacket (small checks), red shirt, black tie, black and white pointed tip shoes with a square tip. Some of you will remember him at graduation in a long gown a la Isaac Hayes…..seems like he’s still living the life…
Continue to have fun Mac
All the best

RE: Better late than never

Hi Errol,
I add my voice to the chorus of those thanking the 2013 Reunion Planning Committee, for their hard work in the planning and execution of the event. Well done folks. I thoroughly enjoyed all the events I attended, and seeing classmates, some of whom I had not seen since graduation was wonderful.
Re -Morning performances.  I dared to play the steel pan - mind you, I was not a pan player.   I was coached for weeks by someone who shall remain nameless. On the morning of the performance - stage fright struck.  I remembered the beginning of the tune, blacked out in the middle, but ended with a flourish. I was mortified. In hindsight however, I realize how brave I was.  Under Harry Joe's tutelage you came out of your comfort zone, and tried new things.  That's what Mausica did to you.

Dear Errol,
You might have seen where my email was AGAIN (3x) compromised. I am really frustrated over this, AND I do not get frustrated very easily.  However, this is my new email address.  I will be sending it to Brenda and a few others.  I can wait until next Friday for it to be put on the blog.  I hope that I do not get hyper-vigilant over this.  It was great seeing you and hanging out with you at the reunion.  Really happy that you decided to keep the gift.  Did it travel well? Hope that you got it home safely.

Hi Errol,
Just wanted all of our Mausican friends to know that I share my pictures on Facebook. "TobagoGray". There are albums for each reunion, even those that I did not attend. Enjoy and tag yourself.

RE: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2013-Aug-08-2310Hrs
I was  only able to attend that 'enchanted evening' at the Hyatt. I definitely missed 'Scratch' but meeting once more others of the 67-69 group,  Maura, Hazel, Jacqui (we called her 'Fresher' because she came in a little after the rest of us), Maxine, Marlene, Bernice, Maria as well as others I met mainly through the Alumni Choir. I really loved the sing along session but was praying all the time that no one asked me to sing about how ' de puddin' tumble down, no proof in de eating.' I am a Methodist Preacher now so I guess that is why my prayer was answered. That song would have no meaning to the 'younger' Mausicans who were not privileged to be part of that traditional Christmas experience, but when I remember the entire calypso I would share the words. In the meantime I will continue to enjoy reading about my fellow Mausicans. Thanks, Errol! Thanks to the organizing skills of Maria and Joan and the rest! Looking forward to 2015 D.V.

Hello Organizing Committee
Thumbs up to the Organizing Committee of Reunion13.  I appreciate your time and effort that went into staging all these activities at different venues. Wow! I enjoyed every moment of it and  it was indeed a pleasure seeing everyone especially those who attended from my  Mausica 2-year stint.
I am already looking forward to Reunion 15 in whatever form.
Congratulations to all of you.

Re Mausica Weekly

2013-Aug-06-1229Hrs
Congratulations to the organizing committee of Mausica's 50th Anniversary Celebration on a tremendous job undertaken and well accomplished.I believe we all appreciate the colossal undertaking of co-ordinating events in both islands but, your efforts are well documented.I attended all but the final's day's events and enjoyed the activities immensely. The 'South Day'was my favourite ,not only for the fine coordination and choice of venues but also for the music and food.
WELL DONE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE!
On a personal note I would like to thank Anna Maria Mora,Joan Braithwaite and Heather Arthur who consistently kept in touch to make sure 'all was well'with the'foreigners'.Your kindness and graciousness are greatly appreciated. You are truly special individuals.
Errol,
May I take this opportunity to again express gratitude for keeping us connected.
Looking forward to the next reunion.

RE: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2013-Aug-03-1217Hrs
Hi Errol,
Thanks for this wonderful medium you have given us to communicate with you and others. I just want to say thanks to the planning committee for organizing the reunion 2013. It was a job well done. I only attended two events but I enjoyed them thoroughly. I was able to meet with friends at the cocktail party and the thanksgiving service.
The Service was such an uplifting event. Kudos to the young people of the Canaan/Bon Accord Methodist Church. Congrats to the pastor ,our own Mausican pioneer. I am so happy I attended the church Thanksgiving service. I had planned to attend two other events, the Valencia picnic and the finale at Paraiso, but was unable to do so. I am real sorry I could not be at Paraiso. We have to be so grateful to Gerard. I hope everyone found his/her time and stay in Trinidad and Tobago enjoyable.
My two comments to the organisers are: the reunion was a bit too long and also expensive, for me. I LOOK FORWARD TO THE 2015 REUNION which, I believe should be a cruise (What do you say Maria and Brenda?). God Bless Mausicans!

RE: Going back to the campus

2013-Aug-03-0028Hrs
Dear Errol:
I found going back to the campus to be a moving experience. I live in Arima and pass by the college regularly. But being in the auditorium was special. I could hear someone shouting out "Mayfair", a voice from 46 years ago. Could have been Andre. Or Bullock. I could see Bunny Osbourne coming back into the Hall after I had shouted out "Bolero", and putting out an all points bulletin for "one name". He did get that name, but the problem for him was what to do with it.
The moment of silence for our fallen colleagues, and the spontaneous calling out of some of the names was poignant. The Mausican alas is not immortal. My year group has lost 14 good souls, more than one tenth of us. I remembered the pudding falling down on the late Cheryl Gittens in the formal dinner. Errol Jones, Stanisclaus, and Raymond Mendes (and probably Noel Duncan) were bringing the flaming pudding into the hall, the tallest men on campus. And the flames got too uncomfortable, and they tried to make an adjustment, and the pudding shifted. And fell on poor Cheryl, a girl whose spirit was quintessentially Mausican.
I also remembered Yvonne who had the same number as I (20), thus we had to perform before the assembly together twice, on the same morning. I suppose at some point they cut out that aspect of the place. But in 1967 when I got there, each morning two people performed. You sang, read a poem, danced...whatever.
Can some of you send a note to Errol indicating what were your performances. I think I read an essay for one of them,"The case for not conforming" that made its way into the Mausican.
I saw a few people from my year group, 67-69, and a few who were a year upstream , and some a year down stream from us. Links in a chain that was important to me. That annual replenishing and the tension it produced, cannot be compared.
Mausica in its hey day, was before computers and power points. The library was never adequate. But the textbooks were great. The lecturers stood there before a podium and explained their content. I am still to work out the paradox of Dukhan, being so incredibly deadpan and boring, and yet educational psychology was the subject I think students loved the best.
Mausica remains for me a very emotion-filled memory, I think I grew up there. One of our graduates,Leroy Cox, from Point Fortin, sang a calypso, and in the chorus was a mournful refrain
"Mausica! doh leh me go, doh leh me go you know
That I love you so
Mausica! doh love me go, doh leh me go you know
How I love you so.
I could see how the thought of leaving the place could have caused a man to grieve like that.

RE: Poem by JoY

Well Joy, thanks for the poem and it I well enjoyed. An excellent piece! Little did you know that even before the boat rocked you into Tobago, Winston had already declared at Papa Joe's, that the word for the rest of the week was, JOY! Indeed it was a week filled with JOY in so many ways. To the Mausica family and friends, thanks for this JOY you brought!

Hi Errol
Congratulations on a job well done.  Sincere appreciation for the hard work done by the organizing committee.   Although my attendance was limited to two activities due to family constraints, I was extremely happy to have been part of this great experience to reconnect with ‘family’ and expand with new contacts; also to put faces to names from the blog.  The Return to MTC was truly memorable; took some pics outside Wingate. Looking forward to future events...Blessings to all!
