RE: On Trinidad's Independence.

2012-Aug-25-0201Hrs
My dear Errol,
Iwrote this for a publication in ouston, Texas at the request of the editor of the One Locve CAribbean Newspaper. I thught you might like a copy for the "Weekly Update" I know its long. The comment about my writing was in response to a compliment recieved for this piece from another member of the trinbago community here.
My writing is a gift of the spirit, nurtured by good teachers in my elementary school and college. I never went to secondary school. Linda
I Was There On August 31, 1962.
An eyewitness's retrospective on TnT Independence Celebrations by Linda E. Edwards
The night was a calm and clear one, when we gathered on the front lawn of the Red House on Abercromby Street, to watch the Flag of Trinidad and Tobago, replace the Union Jack, as OUR flag. There were thousands of people in Woodford Square. Hundred of dignitaries were seated on the Red House Lawn. I was there not because I was a dignitary, but because as a young teacher at the Government Training College, I had been chosen as a laison aide to The Hon. R.H. Walsh-Atkins, a member of the British Parliament and Delegation to the "show".It ws a rare opportunity to see things up close, though we were not given seats, but had to stand at the far back, almost against the Red House wall.
There were all the usual speeches by the politicians and the Queen's Representative- Princess Margaret. And then, the MOMENT.
The flags were to be lowered and raised at Midnight, precisely. Undubtedly, the Regimantal Flag Detail had rehearsed it over and over, so that the flags would pass each other at the halfway mark Obviouslty too, they had a contingency plan, because just as he was about to participate, one of the designated soldiers fainted. As he slumped forwards, he was supported and moved back by two others, one of whom took over to raise and lower the flag. You would have had to be right there to notice it. The flags never wavered but continued their movemets, the Red, White and Black up into the air of freedom, the Union Jack to be folded with dignity, and retired.
You would have thought Dr. Eric Williams had comandeered the wind, because as soon as the flag got to the top of the pole a breeze came up Abercromby Street and it waved gaily as if it was alive. The crowd went wild!
We were choked up, my friends and I,Leslie Forbes, Eleanor Rodney, and Benjie, all now living in Canada were part of the team of young teachers, as were Mona Slater, Kathleen Archer-John, and Nanette Nurse, living still in Trinidad, and our friend Stevenson Sarjeant, now deceased. We were part of that group of young people, given a brand new nation, for whom everything was possible. Other aides came from St.Mary's College and QRC
We were enthused with meeting delegates, parliamentarians from all over the world. The Minister of Education of New Zealand was so intrigued with my joyous personality, he wanted to take me back to his country with him.I told him I was engaged to be married, though the formal engagement was months away.
As Laison Aides we got to go to all the parties and official functions, but were reminded that we had to act with circumspection. We represented our country.
Now the new Piarco Airport was opened for Independence, and I got myself into a bit of a pickle upstairs in the lounge. We were waiting for the formal commissoning of the airport. I decided to see if the hot water taps really had hot water. Well, as I opened the tap, the force of the water pushed the entire faucet off. It had not been tightly screwed on, and water shot about five feet into the air. I panicked right in front of the Russian delegation, as the water poured out! One of the men calmly leaned under the sink and turned off the intake pipe. I would not have known what to do, as we still did not have pipe borne water in our own home, and though we had it at the hostel where I lived, I was no plumber.
You can well imagine how embarassed we all were, after having been told to be particularly cicumspect in front of the delegates. I looked at the Russian delegate(there were three of them together) and the"plumber" was laughing with me, not at me. I was so grateful. I could still see his narrow face and close cut blonde hair. I did not know his name.I wonder if he remembers saving the Airport from a massive flood due to an unsecured faucet, at its opening. .
Until that building was replaced, I could not go in and out of Trinidad, without remembering that day.
Fifty years later, I am still proud of the part I played in the independence celebrations of my country.
We had so many national songs to sing,
in addition to the National Anthem.
I still know most of them by heart.
My favorite is
"God Bless our Nation
of many varied races
may we posses the common love
that binds and makes us one.
Let it be known around the world,
that we can boast of Unity
and take a pride in our liberty.
Fifty years later, we have had our upheavals, but we can still boast of our unity of Trinidad and Tobago, one flag, many races, many religions, one people.

I read all the comments but write little. I enjoy all of it and am adding my 2 cents worth. Regarding the Mausica 50th anniversary reunion: I suggest we make a Tobago trip via the early morning ferry from POS. We can choose to spend 1 full day in Tobago and stay at Alan Clovis' Kariwak hotel which is located at Crown Point airport. We can also look at the calendar of events for Emancipation celebrations and do a bit of that together. Photo ops can mark these occasions.

Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2012-Aug-21-1053Hrs
Dear Errol,
Thanks again for keeping us together. Thanks also for transmitting  the expression of condolences on the death of my Dad. I am excitedly looking forward to the grand reunion of Mausicans in 2013. I have attended all the Caribbean ones but, unfortunately, the timing of the US and Canada ones did not work for me.  The reunions are not only an important occasion for renewing friendships, but can also serve as a useful means for networking and sharing information about ourselves and our work. It was while on the Tobago bus tour, I believe, at one of the reunions that I learnt that I could have had the Ministry of Education approve my book for use in schools. Subsequently, the Government took over 200 copies of my book: Women and Family Law and Related Issues which answers 229 questions on basic family law issues - divorce and separation, nullity of marriage, paternity, maintenance of spouses, custody, access, adoption, domestic violence, cohabitation, succession (wills and probate),mediation and maternity protection. Some of my law colleagues have complained that I have robbed them of consultancy fees by writing that book, but it is important that we, Mausicans, " continue the work of "moulding a nation through service " by providing  to the public, at affordable cost, education and services, whether by demstifying the law, as I have done, or providing other services within our respective areas of expertise.
In that light, I would like to commend to all of you, my namesake's,Hazel Ann Gibbs de Peza's 's Ebook entitled: Correcting Misconceptions: The Spiritual Baptist Faith  available from Amazon. Perhaps we can have a book display of work by Mausicans at the reunion. It would also be useful to know who is involved in what enterprises. Recently, I was talking with another Mausican, who was unaware that Errol Meighoo (1967-69) has been involved in construction for many years. Mausicans are all over doing a variety of things. Perhaps we can give a thought to sharing that information and supporting one another for our mutual benefit. Just a thought...

Hi Friends and Family,
I have recently published an Ebook: Correcting Misconceptions: The Spiritual Baptist Faith. (Trafford Pub.) It is my undergrad thesis that served as the basis for my first book: My Faith Spiritual Baptist Christian. (Xulon Press) Both books are available on Amazon.com. Many of you have read my first book, My Faith. It shall be a pleasure for me to see your review of the book on Amazon.com. It will also boost sales.
A look at or purchase $3.99 and a review of my first Ebook, Correcting Misconceptions, shall also be most appreciated. Thank you kindly.
I have been informed by my publisher that this is a good way to advertise. I start with my friends: that's what friends are for! and family: charity begins at home! Thanks in advance.
Love always!
Jesus is the only answer!

Condolences to the family  of  Marcelline Ward. Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord! and let perpetual light shine upon her. My last meeting with her was very pleasant as usual.Smiles reflected from our two faces.
I  now know the reason for the nick name. Even the last time I saw her, I called her "Elke" and she took no offence. We always felt happy to see each other.
Later on, I remember another mausican telling me, she is not well.\, pray for her, which I did.
God knows best. He giveth and he taketh. She has passed on, we will all follow her. We all have to make our payhs straight with God's help. Always call on Jesus, one God with the Father and the Holy Spirit.
He is the mediator between God the Father and us.
He also appointed his Mother to be the mediator between him and us when he told John,
"behold thy mother". John represented all of us, mankind.
He said to Mary, "Behold thy son". She is mother to all of us. Aren't we all brothers and sisters of Jesus?
Hence, isn't this the reason why Catholics ask Mary to intercede for us?
It was at Mary's request, at the wedding in Cana that Jesus performed his first miracle changing water into wine.

Thanks, Angela for stirring the wonderul memories of Marcelline with her beautifully smooth skin that must have prompted her to respond to those  Second Years that she used Lux.    I well remember, trying to hide the chuckles during Initiation, whenever she had to repeat to them ---"My name is Elke Sommers, and I uses Lux..."  You know if they caught you laughing that it would be your downfall, because you would be commanded to "wipe that smile orf yuh face, and put it in yuh pocket!"     We really had great times with her because of her fun loving nature.   I pray that her soul rest in peace.

I know I am too late for thgis week's blog, but just to let you know that my Dad passed on Saturday, July 28 and will be buried on Tuesday, August 7, at 10:00 a .m. at San Juan R.C. Church, where he played the drums in the choir. He was 93 and was a skilled ballroom dancer, winning dance competitions on Scouting for Talent and the various balls like Black and White , Red Rose Ball, etc.  He had a good life. Although he lost most of his sight and hearing when he was in his 40's and had to stop working, he never let his disabilities keep him back from enjoying himself. He was in his 70's and the ladies in the Senior Citizens Birthday Club were still fighting one another to dance with him.

Sincere condolences to the family and friends of Marcelline "Elke Sommers" Ward. I well remember that first night in September 1970 when she proudly stated that she  "uses Lux soap like the film star Elke Sommers". Our  second year colleagues wanted nothing better.
Who could ever forget that other eventfull night when  Marcelline was seen going through the track in search of the pot of pelau which disappeared from Wingate?
Do you know who were the Bopsey Twins? I think it was a second year male student who gave us  that name.
Yes, she will be one of the Mausicans who will be remembered for a long time.
May she rest in peace.
Let us share other memories at Reunion 50 2013.

Shirley, I totally agree with your suggestion about posting pictures of the person who has passed on. Please, I/we will also appreciate a young version of the person as many of us have gracefully taken new physical identities and sometimes do not even recognise each other.

The organising team is running with the ball and of course we do appreciate the effort.   All Mausicans know how bringing even small events to fruition means sacrifices of time and energy both physical and fuel... the list is longer but you get the drift.   Many thanks.
We shall overcome.    Blessings to all.

In a recent "fact finding" visit to Mausica, I met one of the Managers of the MYLAT programme on campus, Mrs. Scantlebury. She gleefully informed me that she is the niece of one of my fellow Mausicans, Carlston Gray. She was most helpful and I am sure will offer us assistance in our desire to "return to roots". Many blessings to all.

Hi to all Mausicans
Our 2013 Reunion/50th Anniversary Celebration is approximately 1 year away. The members of the Organizing Committee thank you for your patience. We know that you were very anxious to hear the details of this Grand Celebration but we wanted to dot the I's and cross the T's before divulging information.
We started the conversation in November 2011  and that resulted with a Christmas brunch at the Trinidad Hilton. Pictures of this event were posted on the blog. Our Committee worked long and hard with meetings in North, South and Central Trinidad. We will be heading to Tobago for a meeting.  We hope that our efforts are appreciated.
We are working assiduously to finalize all events, with costing. The weekend in Tobago we all agree is a MUST.  There is only one weekend  and it is the first weekend after every one gets in.  Remember that we start on 19th July 2013, therefore we want to get the Tobago Celebration "JUST RIGHT."  We are also finalizing that "RETURN TO OUR ROOT- MTC"  It is all there, so please be patient. The Registration Form will be posted on the website by Friday 27th July 2012.  Fear not we wukkin'

TO: THE PLANNING COMMITTEE
I would like to suggest that the planning committee arrange for all Mausicans to spend a few hours at the original campus as part of the celebratory activities. You may have to seek permission from the Ministry of National Security because I think there is an army base on the premises. That would be real nostalgic!

Hello Errol,
Congrats to Selwyn Jacob on his award. It thrills my heart whenever I hear of the the accomplishments of my fellow Mausicans.
In TNT there are several opportunities  for us to live the legacy of MTC. Recently on Wack Radio, during my interview, we discussed  MTC and its contributions to folksongs  in TNT and the entire world. Last year I heard a German or Finnish choir singing one of our folksongs on you tube. Kenny Phillips of WACK Radio and  Ken, my interviewer, would welcome your calls or visits to the station at 129 Coffee St, Sando,. Tel. # 868-652-9774/5521.  My wife, Marjorie, said it was "refreshing" to hear Lulu on Wack.
Thank you Eastlyn for the info on our mutual friend, Dela. What a legacy. I remember your surprise when he stopped by the gala in the 2007, in Tobago. "Davis, wey you doing here?" Dela was an honorary Mausican. In Trinidad, at Belgrove,  we celebrated his life with tears and lots of laughter. It was typical Dela.
So long for now.

Belated congrats from me to Selwyn.  When I don't  respond immediately it almost never gets done.   Mausicans have talent cyah done!   All the talk about starch mango and Julie mango reminds me that 1981 ( when I came to Montserrat) was the first time I ever had the pleasure of eating a Julie mango all by myself.... before that in Trinidad, it was Face, Side or Seed!   I never bought mangoes in any overseas country. I used whatever was grown there... much better I think.
It amazed me to see that nearly everyone has a Julie mango tree in their yard.
I am so looking forward to reunion 2013!   most of all, I want to get to meet those bloggers from the later years... so many new names. Errol, any idea how many of us there are?   ie anyone who has ever blogged qualifies for the count.  Any chance of  a Cd with the Folk songs?   Blessings to all.   Pat

Ladies of Kirkendale:
Joy, that picture brings back fond memories of the ladies across the tracks. Mike Duncan wrote and sang a calypso "how dey nice so", 39-40 years later it is still true. To all of the ladies of Mausica, especially those from my sister hostel Kirkendale "yuh still nice".
Selwyn:
From the time I saw the quality of "Harry Joe's Children", I knew that you were a first class producer. Congratulations on your award. I hope that you can find some time to extend the video to include the later years of Mausica, "Daphne Cuffie's children".
Is it possible to have a panel discusssion along with with clips from the video on one of the TV stations during the reunion. I am sure Linda and others can create "a fifty year special" for TV audiences.
Looking forward to next July and the Reunion.

Hi Fellow Mausicans, It is so great to be kept up to date on all that is happening in the lives of Mausicans. Yes Rodney Foster, Della was also my very good friend. I attended the funeral service at the Scarborough R.C. church. Mausica was mentioned in the Eulogy and your name was also mentioned as one of his 'wayward'(my description) friends. I was also mentioned but not in the same way- you tek dat1!- He had a lovely send off. If you see man in dat funeral ! Ah guess all a dem come to 'drown' their sorrows without entering water! I was in Trinidad when he died. He drowned right in the sea in Lambeau where I live. It was a shock to everybody because Dela never go deeper than his ankle in the sea. May his soul rest in eternal peace .Eastlyn 64-66.

Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2012-Jun-06-2326Hrs
Hello Errol,
On Tuesday night, on my return home, Marjorie greeted me with, "Dela gone."  Now, I know two Delas, my childhood friend, Delano Davis and my uncle's girlfriend, Della. I searched her face for a clue but there was none. I stood there speechless for a long moment and then I ventured, "Meh pardnah, Dela?"
She said, "Yes."
I am sharing this with the blog because many of my 66-68 Mausican peers would remember him.
Dela was at Centeno when I attended Mausica. He and some of his suffering, riding pardnahs would visit me on campus. At that time Centeno had only plants and livestock. Everybody knew they were looking for some action.  He drove a white Sunbeam. He was a real saltfish and became popular with some of the girls. Nuff said.
When I played football on Bertrand's Eleven, the team engaged the Centeno squad in a few fete matches on their ground.
It was lots of fun.The great Sir. Frank Worrell and Gary Dore's father were on an opposing team.
Dela's funeral wil be at the Belgrove crematorium in Tacarigua on Tuesday, June 12th.  3:00 pm -5:00 pm. For info, call Carol at 640-0704.
With God's help , I'll be there.
On a much happier note, I wish to inform you that masman, Alan Simpson, was on Winner's row again.
His band, "We Kinda Ting" ("We Kind Of Thing"), placed first in the Atlanta Carnival which was held during the Memorial Day weekend.
Have a good weekend.
As usual,
Rodney Foster.

Hi Phillip et al,
Back home now. Manila was a mind-boggling experience for me. The people are full of smiles and courtesy although living is very challenging.  You see two extremes with just one glance, rich and poor living side by side.  There are 7,100 islands in The Phillipines. Managing this has to be a major challenge for any government. There are 2,085 guidance officers who work in schools all over these islands. 1000 of them attended the conference. 10 million people live in Manila on weekends and 12 million during the week.  2 million come into Manila to work from Monday to Friday.  Traffic is horrendous.  I am trying to make sense of this experience in relation to T & T.  There are always lessons to learn. I can only think about the thousand plus shoes that Imelda Marcos had in her closet.
Sorry that we did not get in touch so that I could have been in touch with your neice?  Stay strong and blessed Maria.
Yes Pat. 2012 is moving really fast into 2013.  Doh hustle it so fas nuh.  D birthdays comin fas too, BUT doh worry b happy.  How come yuh not in London for d Jubilee?  Maria

HI Mausicans
A few years ago we started the Calabash Festival which oened up a whole new activity to me.
We arranged for Noel Duncan of Tobago ( I had seen an article about him in MOTMOT)to workshop with us and he showed us how to " work the calabash" ...  he even had me carving a turtle on a calabash when all I can draw is Tea!
Anyhow , a lot of my spare time ( such as it is ) is spent collecting, cutting, gutting and then carving calabash.  Attached are two of my favourites... they come in all sizes.
have you noticed how 2012 is racing to be in time for the 2013 REunion?  ah cyah WAIT!  Pat
Be safe and be kind to those around you.  Hug your children a lot... they are  never too big for that.   Show the love.

I have a niece who is currently on a teaching contract there. It would have been nice to have a phone contact for her. I will verify this with my sister. However, I'm not sure you would still be there. I'll send an email to your personal mailbox.
I am quite sure that you are doing Mausica, T&T, and yourself 'proud' at that conference. Keep up the good work.

Bertie's daughter has been keeping me updated and gave me the following information.  He is now in a rehab facility after receiving radiation and is waiting to have chemo.  His speech is not as slurred and his memory is returning, so he can have phone conversations.  There is a piano in the rehab centre and he played a few chords on it and the staff was quite impressed.  Let's keep him in our prayers.

Some of us have begun working on a history of Mausica, and I would appreciate knowing which faculty, besides MA Cuffie, myself and June Joseph are still here with us. Please reply to Errol for publication. I would light a candle for Mr. Douglas. He took charge of a medical condition in 1968, and lost a lot of weight. That was 44 years ago!
May he rest in peace.
i know none of the faculty who came after I left, so aa list of them would also be helpful.

And after all that we have been through in our lives, I would think that we would have matured, become empathic and  have learned to accept life with all its joys and imperfections.  I cannot recall seeing the email. Will have to look for it.  That person after all this time has not gained any wisdom, which comes with aging.  sorry that you had to go through this after all this time. Dear Errol at al,
How are you all.  Just to let you know that we have been proceeding "nicely" with the Mausica50 2013. A Theme has been finally decided and we are now working at finalizing the events which will take place between 19th and 26th July 2013.
Dear, Dear Colleagues, please, I am asking you all to continue to excercise your patience with us. Everything is unfolding as it should.  Errol, we will be in touch with you re: putting the registration form on the website.  Is the website being updated. I have not gone on for a while.  We will need to remind people about the website, especially those new members who have come on since NY.   They will have to learn the procedure.  We will be ready to post the form on the website by the end of June.  Thank you all so much for keeping the energy flowing.
Not sure if I mentioned that I will be in Manila, The Phillipines attending the "International Association of Counselling" Conference. Presenting a paper on "Counselling to Advance the Human Rights of Children and Young People." Would have left Trinidad by the time you see this (13th to 20th), then will be in NY from 21st to 26th, back home on 26th, then leave again for St. Lucia on 31st and returning on 4th June.  This latter is organized by Felix, it is a follow-up to our Pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 2010.
The work of committee continues while I am gone, asl continue to meet and put what is necessary in place.  I want to thank the members of the committee for their committment and passion about ensuring that 2013 will be  "Unforgettable."

Errol,
I appreciate this blog for the social impact it has had on Mausica's alumni world wide. I've been reading for the past two to three years. I would like the trend that the blog has set to continue in the pleasant exchange and update of peer information and whereabouts.
I was asked to 'set the record' straight with regard to my contributions to the sporting life of the campus during my two-year stint. In attempting to do so, it appears that an individual has chosen to comment on my personal life instead. I would like that person to send his comments to my personal email box and not to the blog.
I am quite certain that we would all agree that the purpose of this blog is not to examine each other personal lives. This is not the forum for this. I would like to express my displeasure over the comments made regarding my married life in Siparia. There are three sides to every issue. Yours, mine, and the truth.

Hello Errol,
Kindly pass on my condolences to the family of Merle Manswell.
I last saw Merle, my 66-68 sister, at the 2007 reunion in Tobago. We danced,  had a good time and reminisced. She was dancing non-stop.
She used to call me "Ring Ting Ting", a name I  earned after singing a hitsong made popular by the Merrymen of Barbados.. Leroy Cox, my guitarist, and I brought the house down in assembly that morning.
It was a pleasure meeting Merle at Mausica. She was a track star and a good all-round student.
Rest in peace and rise in glory, my dear friend.
