‘Steelpan and Calypso – Trinidad and Tobago’s Troubadours’

Toronto, October 13, 2009: Caribbean music icon Desmond Waithe will be the featured speaker for the 2009 Lise Waxer Memorial Lecture in the Department of Music at York University on October 23. His talk on “Steelpan and Calypso – Trinidad and Tobago’s Troubadours” will be framed by vintage calypso music performed live by a guest quintet comprising keyboards, bass, pan, percussion and quarto.

Waithe’s lecture will cover the history of steelpan and calypso, from the pan’s ‘tamboo-bamboo’ roots in the 1920s and ‘30s, through the evolution of the instruments using oil drums in the ‘40s, to calypso’s important role in spreading news about current events, fighting the censorship of the British government and pushing the boundaries of free speech.

A native of Trinidad, Waithe is an internationally recognized expert in calypso and pan music. His career spans well over four decades of composing, arranging, teaching and promoting steelpan music. Currently on faculty with the University of Trinidad and Tobago, he is also a regional coordinator for T&T’s Ministry of Education, developing curriculum for pan in the classroom. As a musical director, he leads the champion Exocubs Junior Steel Orchestra and the Renegades Steel Orchestra, who recently performed to standing ovations at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. with T&T’s finest opera singers in celebration of the 47th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

“I have the pleasure of knowing Mr. Desmond Waithe for over four decades as friend and as a mentor” said Lindy Burgess, who directs the Caribbean ensemble in York’s world music program. “He’s an extremely talented, accomplished musician who has travelled the globe promoting the music of Trinidad and Tobago. Along the way he has amassed numerous awards and accolades for his contributions. His visit to York University will have a lasting impact on those privileged to hear him.”

“Bringing this world-renowned musician to York is a natural choice for the Lise Waxer Memorial Lecture, since Ms. Waxer's primary area of research was Latin American music, said Professor Michael Coghlan, Director of York’s Graduate Program in Music which is hosting Waithe’s visit. “We are honoured that our students will have the opportunity to learn directly from a true pioneer of T&T’s most treasured instrument.”

The lecture commemorates musician, ethnomusicologist, author and educator Lise Aerinne Waxer, an alumna of York’s music program who passed away in 2002. Waxer's work in ethnomusicology included producing and hosting one of Toronto's first world music radio programs on CIUT 89.5 FM and conducting fieldwork on salsa music in Cali, Colombia. She also authored two books: Situating Salsa: Global Markets and Local Meanings in Latin American Popular Music (Routledge 2002) and The City of Musical Memory: Salsa, Record Grooves, and Popular Culture in Cali, Colombia (Wesleyan University Press 2002), which received the 2003 Alan P. Merriam Prize and the 2003 ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for popular music. At the time of her death, Waxer was a faculty member in the music department at Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut.

Waxer's family, friends and colleagues established the Lise Waxer Memorial Lecture at York University to celebrate her love of music of all cultures and her joy in sharing that passion with others. Previous speakers in the series include acclaimed Canadian jazz artist Jane Bunnett; York music Professor Michael Marcuzzi; T.M. Scruggs, professor of ethnomusicology at the University of Iowa; and Gage Averill, then Chair of the Music Department and director of the Program in Ethnomusicology at New York University.

The music curriculum at York University features numerous courses which expose students to a wide variety of Latin American music styles. Offerings include Caribbean steelpan; Cuban music; bossa nova workshop; ska, reggae and dancehall; Escola de Samba; Latin and Caribbean popular music; music of the Americas; and popular music of the world.

Call For Help, Then Wait For The Police.

A man called the police emergency number in my county four days ago, and waited outside his house until the police arrived. He was holding a six-inch blade knife, and was covered in blood. “I just killed my wife “ he said. True to his word, the police found her body stabbed more than twenty times lying on the kitchen floor. They arrested him at the scene. A slam dunk of a who-done-it. The police also picked up their only child, a twelve year old boy, from school, and took him to the hospital, in case he needed to be treated for shock, before releasing him to his aunt.

Two neighbors, interviewed in what is euphemistically called an upscale neighborhood, said the usual ”The community is shattered”. ”Things like that do not happen here”.

His community as pictured by the media coverage of the murder scene, is called Pearland, an upscale community ($250,000. and up) in the cheapest housing market in the country. There had been no calls, the police said, about domestic violence. The two neighbors, both youngish African-American women admitted that they did not know their Chinese neighbor very well. They had all moved there about four years ago. The housing market was hot then.

What pressures lead a man to stab his wife more than twenty times, and leave a twelve year old without either parent? What seismic shift in societal values, sent this couple from China, all the way to America, to meet violent death in the heartland of upscale prosperity? Mrs. Lu can no longer tell us, and Mr. Lu wears his inscrutable Asian face; his glasses slightly skew in the arraignment photo.

The ethnic backgrounds of the commentator/neighbors and of the murderer and victim together are a comment on the changing face of surburbia, where people move in, and keep their friends from elsewhere, and perhaps do not get to know their neighbors. Domestic violence, in addition, continues to be the secret sin, that when it finally explodes, smashes so many lives.

Asian people, by tradition in the USA, have lived in Asian communities, where they shop, go to church and visit with friends, but in recent years, they too, move to upscale neighborhoods in the exurbs, where the lots are bigger , the children have more room to play, the lawns, by deed restriction are immaculate, and where, perhaps, no one drops over to anyone else’s house for a cup of coffee or tea, and people do not talk to their neighbors except on National Night Out, which was last night, October 6. On such a night, the focus is on keeping the community safe, by getting to know your neighbors, so when you see some stranger lurking around, you know he does not belong there.

Mr. Lu belonged there. Did anyone know Mrs. Lu was in danger? Apparently not. Was domestic violence the topic of crime in that Pearland , TX neighborhood last night? I doubt it.

There is no community in the world where domestic violence does not happen. We could fool ourselves if we want. We like to think of crime as that little thug like guy, with the baggy pants and the earring, that little African-American or Hispanic American boy and his pals, or the tattooed, hedonistic muscled guy in the athletic shirt, with two earrings and a Mohawk haircut, who belongs to gang, and may be running a meth. Lab..

Few types like that, pictured in the media for this or that carjacking, or minor drug bust, have wives, though many may have girlfriends who get slapped around. So, few murder their wives.

It is the spectacular murder, among the people who are “living the American dream,” that catches our attention. We love to think that a nice house in the suburbs, the two or more car garage, the lot fenced at the rear but sweeping vistas of manicure at the front, the two story brick buildings, were a kind of paradise. Every now and then we get a glimpse of the nightmares within those walls. From behind such walls, a Columbian doctor emerged in rage, and drove her Mercedes over her cheating husband, three times. From behind such walls, an Indian businessman mowed down his wife, with another Mercedes. From behind such walls, an Indian movie producer in the US shot and killed his wife and business partner.

The neighbor next door may be a wife abuser, but we mind our own business, until its too late. We should watch out for the woman next door who is not too friendly- perhaps her husband does not want her talking to the neighbors? We should watch out for the woman who is not seen outside, except entering and leaving the house- isn’t that strange, that she never picks a flower off her own bushes at the front?

All over North America and Europe, these women accompany their husbands in search of a better life. It usually means a better life for the husband, and more space and appliances to clean and maintain for the wife. The freedoms available to American women are not available to new immigrant wives from repressive cultures. I remember seeing some parents come to pick up their children from elementary school. The man and his eleven year old son rode up front, the woman rode in the back seat with her daughter! He was bearded, she was veiled, and they had switched countries, they had the mandatory child seat for the four year old in the back. That was all. So, when such a family is stressed by the business of being in America, or the west, who does the woman turn to? If they were poorer, living in a cheap apartment, the wife could meet other women in the Laundromat, but in a prosperous, new suburban home, all your appliances are installed, making your house an elegant prison, but a prison nonetheless.

From such a prison, a wife may be liberated only by death, while the husband, the cause of that death, heads to another type of prison. It is the boy child of twelve that causes me the most grief. That poor thing needs a lot of hugs, and some explanation as to why. I hope he gets both.

Thanks for informing the Mausicans of my mother's death. Dorothy Cook. my mom spent many years in nursery education both at Model Nursery School in San Fernando and at the Audrey Jeffers Day care. We knew she was loved but her large funreal was indeed a source of consolation to us. Though she was not in the best of health this was not expected at this time.

I have been on the blog practically since it started and I have NEVER got one of the scam mails referred to , BUT ever since I returned from Shanghai Special Olympics and started e mailing some really sweet students who had been our aides I have regularly received Junk mail ... the Chinese Subject line alerts me and I simply delete... it's about 4 per week. I have also stopped writing to my friends there because someone is getting to me through them.

If I see a name in my inbox that I don't recognise... I DELETE.

Re Grenada: I would like to know how the handover of books was done. Who delivered, who received and where. I would like to have a picture in my mind even if none was actually taken of the occasion. Pat

Every time you put your e-mail address on a warranty certificate for a PRODUCT YOU PURCHASE, EVERY TIME YOU ADD A SERVICE TO YOUR HOUSE, EVERY TIME YOU ORDER A PRODUCT ONLINE, YOU CAN BECOME A VICTIM OF WHAT THE GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA CALLS 419 SCHEMES. You are not vulnerable if you have no e-mail.

I get a significant amount of offers for penile extenders, notes from sexy looking women telling me what they would like to do to me(They think the L.E. Edwards is male), and offers from eHarmony and Christian Dating Services. I simply edit them all out without opening.

Those 419 scams are designed to catch the 2g's- the gullible and the greedy.Sometimes, I respond by telling them I co-operate with the Government of Nigeria in investigating internet fraud. The scamer then passes my address to a poor woman in the Phillipines whose husband died and left all this money that she needs to help get out.

My standard response for days when I am not busy" Madam; your country is so poor that it takes five years salary to afford one year of high school. If your husband was rich, he made the money from the poor. Why not use it to build a free secondary school?God will love you for it. I have no need of more money." This, is usually the end of Ms. Maria de Santa Rosa de something or other Pulaou. I then laugh, pour myself a glass of wine, and walk in my garden contemplating greed and gullibility.

Eversince I had my e.mail address put on the Mausica Directory I have been receiving strange e-mails from people in Africa,England etc telling me that I won money or offering me opportunity to make money. The catch is that they are requesting personal information.

I know better than to fall for these scams.. I know I am not the only one receiving these e-mails. I would suggest to our Mausica family members to not fall for these scams.

The agony is over. The campaign became quite nasty at times but we have a government with which the majority of people are satisfied. Those who are further interested can continue to check www.mni-alive.com
Elections were held on Tuesday 8th for nine seats. A few days ago I was a bit stressed out and found solace in the Mausica Alumni Queen's Hall Concert which refreshed my spirit... that CD really has healing qualities thank you for putting it together Selwyn J.

Dear Fellow Mausicans,
Thank God for the Mausica Blog.I came in late on Thursday night from Halifax and decided to check the computer before going to sleep after midnight and read of Bridget's death and intended burial the next day. It was just a little while ago that we had been together in Trincity Mall where I gave her a total rundown on the Grenada reunion. She was sorry she had missed it. In January when I wrote of calling Mrs.Cuffy on her birthday, I had mentioned that Bridget was not doing so well, but I had no idea we would lose her during the year.She taught my two girls at UWI Laboratory Pre-school and we had kept in touch over the years.she does not live too fart away from me. I was glad to see that there was a good turn out of Mausicans at her funeral. The tributes were wonderful. There were some Mausicans there that I had not seen for many, many years.
Let's continue to support one another.I leave sweet Trinidad on Friday. I'll be writing you from Nassau next time.

I attended Brigette's memorial funeral held last Friday. What a tribute ... by way of attendance.... and moreso, the portrait of her life of service to the nation, particularly the early childhood care and education sector.

I was personally touched by her quiet, always dignified and very skilled way in which she worked with children in her own school and at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus. For me, my daugther is one of the many, many beneficiaries of her service. She would certainly be deserving of a National award, even if posthumously.

Brigette, you have gone to be with the saints.... we would continue to take example from you stewardship, and at some point, we expect to join you... . Do give 'Psyche' (Allison Taylor-Mentor -- 1968/70) our regards

I know that many Mausicans will be deligted to see it, so I have printed a copy esp for the early '70.I will pass it on when necessary: brings back beautiful memories. Having taught a few thousand students, some of us remember the surname of comrades or the first names alone.

It would be nice to see some pictures and videos of the Sports, the Mausican concerts and Calypso tents esp since many Mausicans have worked for more than33 and one third and have thrown in the towel, or are about to. Let us enjoy those wonderful moments before we part ways. Pat.

Another Mausican passes on. Bridgette Henry-Haye (64 - 66) passed on Monday last. Her funeral takes place on Friday, 28th August at 12.00 noon at the St. Mary's Tacarigua AC Church. She was a quiet, excellent student who went on to excell in teaching at various levels.

Thanks again Errol. Peter Brewster ( related to Vernetta 1963-65?) never mind the change to Valsayn. You only need to be present at one reunion to realise that Mausica occupies a space that cannot be contained within walls... it's like WE ARE THE WORLD! and I do not say that lightly or with conceit.
Someone needs to document the non residential years.

I am very sorry that I missed the Reunion in Grenada. From all accounts, everyone seemed to have had a great time. I am still in Venezuela taking care of some personal stuff. I have heard that New York got the vote as the site for the next Reunion. We are flattered and we have not met to discuss this in its entirety. We would definitely need all the help we can get to pull this off so we will be starting from the time I get back to New York ,which will be early September. I know that there are lots of Mausicans in and around New York and this would be a good time to get them all involved. Wish us good luck.

I was lead to the site by Merv Garvin, a fellow Mausican.My name is Peter Brewster .Was in the class of 1973-1975.Mrs Daphne Cuffie was the Princ. It was an experience that has stayed with me everyday since.Some of the lecturers at the time were,Mr.Wafe,Mr.Wilson. Mrs roopchand VP, Mr Douglas Mrs Thelma,Mr Maundy,Mr Batiste,Mr .Samuel, and many others. There was so much unity,respect,and communal spirit at the campus at that time,I used to pinch myself all the time back then.We laughed ,we cried,we played we studied together.Then we went our separate ways. Dear Friends,
Greetings to all! I thoroughly enjoyed Grenada, save for my mishaps. I am fine.My doctor here blames it on stress. Apparently, that is responsible for a lot of ailments.I am still working as hard as ever, though, preparing for a meeting in Halifax next week. Any Mausicans there?
I attended Allison's funeral and sang my heart out although our last conversation was her complaint about my singing at Cascadia. It was good to see some folks from our year group there whom I had not seen for many years.
I enjoyed immensely Rodney's 20th anniversary celebration. I am so glad I attended.I always thought it a coincidence that the piece I did at Jack Warner's Centre of Excellence for the Reunion was entitled : Remember When , Memories of Mausica Teachers' College, when I had not even heard of Rodney's book then. Great minds thinking alike or fools seldom differing? Take your pick. So far, Errol I do not know where my piece was saved, so I have not sent you an electronic copy as requested and have not gotten around to typing it over or scanning it in.Soon , soon.....
I have already started to advertise New York. It is only now that I am writing this that I remembered that I had taken some photos in Grenada that I have not yet down loaded and looked at.
I went on the Mausica compound to drop off one of my books for Claudette. Needs a Grell Cup clean up. Any takers?

I lived at Sunset Villa, the best in the whole campus of 1974. We had great guys like,to mention a few...Dale Scoby,who could never beat me at a game of chess if his life depended on it.Gary Woochong,the only member and president of the Chinese association of Mausica.My roomate Hudson Rogers,who brought me breakfast when I was too ill that day.Francis Young, just a great guy.Kenneth Draighton, Desmond Haynes,Mantab,Tambie,Kamal,Blood,and many others .We looked out and looked after each other.In the words of my dear late friend,Everton Warner who visited the campus one night,"Dis is ah real togetherness" This way of campus life came to an end in 1974 when the doors were closed for new dormitory students the following year.The yearly fresher initiation,was halfheartedly carried out and even questioned by many if it should take place.You see,the new batch of students arriving in September of 1974,left for there homes at 3.00pm.
The were older students, some with extensive teacher experience,some were wives,husbands,some with families.We tried our best to pretend that nothing changed.But could we. Six hostels were reduced to three.A silence visited at night. Activities slowed.The flavour of Mausica left.But we made it through to graduate in 1975.Mausica resurfaced as Valsyn Teachers College.Yes.But as a shadow is to its substance.

Very sad to hear about the untimely passing of Allison "Psychee" Taylor, as reported by Finbar Ryan. Came in 1968, as a first year to my group. A very warm human being, and quintessential Mausican. Wingate girl with all of the wonderful zest of that hostel. Hope she had peaceful final days.

Unfortunately, I was not able to make the Grenada union which seemed to just as much fun and nostalgia as the one I attended in Canada 2 years ago.
On a sad note, I am saddened to hear of the passing of Psyche (Allison Tayloe-Mentore) who was my first year (67/69 -- 68/70). How well I remember her as our Wingate sis, always a ready smile, self assured and much fun. May she rest in peace.

I have an apology to make to Earl John (Storm). He was on my list of performers for the informal concert on the night of the dinner and I do not know how I managed not to call him. I had his name on my programme to close off the show as I thought that his poetry performance would be very strong and would be a fitting close.... but I just forgot. Earl, I am very sorry and just cannot explain the omission.

Celia Parker was one of my mates in the same year group. We attended church together off campus. I met her at the airport in Tobago a little before the Tobago reunion and she promised to attend but didn't. We all have to get our acts together and make our lives right with God because we don't know when our day will reach. It's reason for concern when you see your mates passing on.

This blog coincides with the resurrection of my computer after at least three weeks. My last visit to Grenada was in the pre Mausca period( Yes! I AM that old) so I was totally wowed by the appearance of the place which I described as " bigger than when I had last seen it." I am totally impressed by the courtesy and helpfulness of the people. Postage was half the cost that obtains in Montserrat.
I had a wonderful time and was happy to see so many of the " younger" Mausicans, which augurs well for the future of the reunions. New York will be upon us in the twinkling of an eye and it is not too early for the TRINI posse to start planning for 2013 when we celebrate the big 50! Will we alll wear something gold?
Special hello to Lesley Ann ( for Joan) as we say in Montserrat. Brenda Alexander Perez, you are a gem of great value. Many thanks to the Grenada team. Love and blessings...Pat

My fellow Mausicans,
Grenada was an enjoyable experience. It was another wonderful Mausica family reunion.
Thanks to the entire planning committee for an excellent job. A few twists and turns here and there did not prevent us from having a memorable experience in the Spice Isle.
Marj and I greeted "old" friends with hugs and kisses and made several new ones. Too numerous to list. We are looking forward to New York, New York in 2011. Start saving your dollars from today.
My book signing at NALIS celebrating the 20th anniversary of Remember Wen? was a spiritual experience according to Farida Chapman, a new Mausica Sister..Both she and Felix read at NALIS. Several other Mausicans attended the thanksgiving celebration.
A Roland Maundy Foudation was announced so send your contributions. Stay tuned for more information from the blog.

I want to express my sincere thanks to the LOC (local organising Committee) for the successful Rendezvous 4 just concluded on the Spice Isle. This was my first reunion and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The decor especially for the gathering was outstanding. Errol it was nice to be able to meet the person behind the blog. To Betha thanks for your support. Grenada is a lovely holiday destination. Grand Anse was visited everyday. WOW! looking forward to New York.

Please express my thanks to the members of the committee who planned Spice Isle Reunion 4. I know it was a major task especially since there were so few of you. This was my first trip to Grenada, so I really appreciated the activities, as they gave me an opportunity to see the island. I would especially like to comment on how safe I felt in Grenada and how trustworthy the people are - having forgotten my bag with valuables and money on two occasions and was able to retrieve them intact. Again I would like to compliment you all on the ambiance and the decor for the events which were held at the Trade Centre - Spice Isle reunion won the prize in these areas. The weather cooperated fully, contributing to a successful reunion.

I am a Mausica Graduate who now lives in Toronto, Canada. I teach at Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute for the last 15 years. My year of graduation was 1974. Another one of us hs been called home. Celia Parker Williams 70-72 Wingate passed away last week. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday 10.30am Wesleyan Holyness Church San Juan and Tobago later in the week, not sure when and where.

My deepest condolences to the family of Patricia James Hunte. I only heard of her passing this morning and later found out that today(02 July, 2009) was also the day of her funeral. I remember Pat as a second year student, at Mausica, full of life and energy. Sometime earlier this year when we met at an educational conference at the Hyatt, I was delighted to discover that my memories of her did not have to be adjusted. We had not seen each other for many years and spent a long while chatting. I was shocked to hear of and mourn her sudden passing.
