RE: Mausica!!!

2014-DEC-18-0043Hrs
My Fellow Mausicans,
The word "Mausica" is still good currency.  I use it wherever two or three people are gathered together. On Sunday, December 14th., I recognized  a fellow Mausican at an after-wedding lime  and could not remember the name of the Brother I had met at Reunion 2013 in Tobago.
"Mausica ! Wey is yuh name again?
"Atiba, "  he responded.
We exchanged a Mausica greeting, followed by lots of laughter and smiles.
De lime went to a higher level as a mutual friend, Sharkey Dyer from California, Trinidad, suggested we take ah drink. Angostura,  Single Barrel, was smooth  and mellow.
Atiba was grading some papers when Sharkey called and invited him tuh come and bus ah lime at Tony Joseph's home in Plantation, FL. His response reminded me of the days at MTC wen ah study group at MTC would take ah break tuh play ah game of "chess",  take ah midnight "snack",  go in de cane field or go opposite our campus to our orange groove. Allyuh remember dem days.
By de way, Atiba is Leroy David's brother-in-law and Pastor Leroy is also my Red Guards  Brother.
Sunday's lime followed a beautiful wedding ceremony. About three hundred friends and family members of Nicha Douglas and Emmanuel Cumberbatch  celebrated their union.
As de lime was winding down, I was ole talkin wit ah fella from Antigua and mentioned Mausica. Well, who tell meh tuh do dat?
Mr. Antiguan, Richard Clarke,  inquired,   " You did know Rawlins an G?"
" Yuh mean Rawlins Manwarren an Glenville King?"
"Yes, dem was meh wife brothers-in- law. Cheryl in de next room. Lemme go an call she."
Ah say, "Buh wey de a**e is dis?  Dis world real small, oui."
Imagine de scene wen Cheryl appear. It was tears an laughter. Hugs and kisses. Introductions and reintroductions.  A walk down Memory Lane.  We recalled the many limes we shared in  sweet TNT,  Petit Bourg, Queens and Brooklyn , NY. We remembered the good times we had with our departed brothers. Cheryl asked about Lloyd Brown and Lester Efebo Wilkinson. I couldn't remember Ogorubu's full name,  ah Mausican from Curepe. Den Cheryl tell meh wife dat ah use tuh drink plenty rum wit de fellas and dem. Wat ah time we had.
Accordin tuh meh first roommate, Leroy Cox, "Mausica, ah love yuh too bad."
By de way, wat about Reunion 2015? "Let's Do It Again" in sweet TNT. Clifton Hills Resort in Point is fabulous. Good food and top shelf drinks.Resident DJ, Alpha B running neck an neck wit my DJ, Philo. Alisford would win by ah nose wen he drop "Samba Pa Ti "and "Woman on De Base" at de end. It's  better than  Hyatt. Enuf oletalk fuh now. Trini Serenaders, pass by Ms. Cuffie an Mr. Williams an give dem ah real Mausican Parang.  Allyuh, enjoy de Christmas holidays and may we all have a bright and prosperous New Year.
As usual,
Rodney Foster.

RE: Reunion 2015

2014-DEC-16-2238Hrs
The FIFA Women's World Cup Soccer is being held in Canada in June 2015 and Toronto and vicinity are the locations for  the PANAM Games in July 2015. Some of us are anxious to purchase tickets which are now on sale.  Are we having a reunion 2015?
2014 is ending, where did the time go?  I have vivid memories of Living the Legacy 2013 - as though it was yesterday.
On behalf of Mausicans in Canada, I say thanks for the friendships we continue to foster and pray that they continue with the same sincerity.  We wish everyone Happy Christmas, Happy Kwanza, Happy Holidays, Happy whatever you celebrate. Let every occasion be fun filled and dance even if it's by yourself.

RE: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS 2014-DEC-05

2014-DEC-05-0927Hrs
Let me first say how saddened I am to learn of Mrs Lyris Joefield's passing.  Jasper, I know that you were her tower of strength, which we all saw and admired unconditionally.  You also needed to go deep within to make sure that the tower stood firm and was able to face all the battles that came you ans your family's way.  We also know that you have GOD and this helped to see you through.  May you and your family continue to be blessed and to keep the Faith.
Gwen, thank you so much for the support and encouragement.  I told Keith Shepherd once after writing for 12 years in the Mirror, sometimes the same thing over and over, that I need to stop, because no one is listening.  He said to me" "Girl yuh cyan stop nuh, yuh have to keep on doing until they listen"  The Fr Neil Rodriguez, told me the same thing not too long after.  I listened to them. Not doing it as often, but now and then. I can go to my files and bring out articles that I wrote in the 90's  and the topics will be still relevant.    Like we marking time, buh yuh know how we patient, stubborn and doh give up. Traits of d Cuff?
Pat, congratulations! I would have liked to make the launch but have to Daddy-sit.  I will call you.
I would like to wish all my Mausica Family inexorable blessings for this Christmas Season.  This is the season of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.  The first week of Advent, speaks to Hope, the 2nd week to Peace, the 3rd week to Joy and of course the Christmas Week is Love.  I see many Mausicans living these "gifts" as they give of their time, and talent to help others find Hope, Peace, Joy and Love in their lives.  Please continue to do these Christmas things all year through.  Maria

RE: Mausica Teachers' College Alumni Challenge Trophy (San Fest 2014)

2014-DEC-04-2100Hrs
Hi Errol
Greetings to you and the Mausica family. We are now in the season of Advent and as we look forward to Christmas I am wishing the Mausica family all the best for the season.
Last year the 50th Anniversary Reunion Committee donated a challenge trophy to the NGC San Fest Competition on behalf of the Mausica Teachers' College Alumni in the area of Best West Indian Folk Song Choir. San Fest is organised by the San Fernando Arts Council.
Laventille Government Primary School won the trophy last year in the Primary School Category. This year Eccles Village Anglican School  won the trophy in the Primary School Category. The trophy was presented to the winner at a Grand Command Performance at the Naparima Bowl in San Fernando.
Our very own Fitz James Williams (Fitzy) was a former Principal of the Eccles Village Anglican School.
Congratulations to the winner
All the best

RE: We should know our fellow Mausicans

2014-NOV-30-1505Hrs
Hi Errol
I had a thought come to me recently.I know the names of most of my 66-68 gps along with our 2nd yr  and later on the 1st yrs .Also members of our renowned choir as I was in this cynosure team. But since leaving Trinidad,I seem to know absolutely nothing re my former college mates.I would like all Mausicans ,via our present correspondence system organized by you,to give us a synopsis of what has transpired in their lives since graduation, up to the present.A few photos thrown in would remind us of the person .
I know Rodney is into insurance and writing,Felix was or is a school principal and mask creator,Andre was or is the president of sec school basketball,Selwyn Thompson was or is with the Agri Dev Bank, the achievements of Efebo is well documented. These few examples shows our class mates excelling in all walks of life.
It needs to be brief ,not more than 250 words  with about 4-5 pics or thereabouts.
In this way we will be able to be reintroduced to our former friends and so encourage more interaction on our website.
Bye for now and God's blessings to us all....always.
Love to all....Ivan Ragoonanan(66-68)

Hello to my Mausican family.
I do hope that all of the Mausican family residing of the USA had a great thanksgiving and remembered to thank those who helped them along the path of life.
I also have my moments of gardening for fun. In fact, I am attempting to own as many colours of Hibiscus as I can. In my collection are several unique colours that were created by cross pollination. This is no easy feat in New Jersey. My family enjoys them in the summer months when they are outside, but hate it when the plants occupy parts of the house during the cold months.
On a sad note, Lyris George Joefield, the wife of Jasper Joefield (1972/1974) has passed away. The funeral will be held on Wednesday December 3, 2014. Lyris and I taught together at Bethesda Gov't -Plymouth, and at Scarborough Jr. Secondary.
Sincerely.

RE: Happy Thanksgiving

2014-NOV-27-0148Hrs
My Fello Mausicans,
May all my Mausican family members residing in the US have a blessed and reflective day.
Thank you Ivan for your walk down Memory Lane. As a horticulturist at the renowned Bronx Botanical Gardens, would you consider organizing a Grell Cup type cleanup at our beloved Mausica?
That could be a grand Mausica Reunion! Let's approach the Gov't and businesses on such a joint venture. That would be a good example of " Living the Mausican Legacy."
By de way, talkin bout Mausica love and pardnahship. Meh Red Guard pardnah, Geezmo, Kent Rennie, and his darling wife, Sister Bernice, demonstrated excellent southern hospitality. Once again, Geezmo transported me and  Marjorie tuh visit meh 100 year old great aunt.
Imagine our surprise when she reminded him that he didn't come tuh visit her as he had promised, in July 2013!
Yuh talk bout laughter.
Aye, Bernice, go and visit "De Lot 10 Queen" and write ah big time story about meh great-aunt. Ah done tell she  you and Geezmo comin!

RE: Remembering Darnet Luke

2014-NOV-17-1025Hrs
Enclosed is a photo of my dear friend ,darnet ,in 1974 @ECIAF
Also from l to r: moi..Ivan Ragoonanan (when I had hair),Mohammed aka Khaki Jesus from Grande(Braf (Martin)) knew him, always happy...darnet,and Winston Davis from St Vincent.
We were not close in mausica, but I always remembered him as being competent playing the cuatro but especially when he sang"an wen ah put mi Han on Lulu Gaul an Lulu feint away, Doh feint away ,Lulu doh feint away,o lawd mi yellow Gaul ,doh feint away".I believe that this folk song was Darnet's signature, made for him.
But in ECIAF,we struck up a lasting friendship.we visited his Gov't home in Santa Cruz many times admiring how he had developed extra land around his dwelling into a commercial vegetable  garden of Eden.Cherry was there & we always had a meal &@Xmas ,parang for so.we used to travel in Darnet's beat up,rickety jalopy..can't remembers the model, either a Zephyr or Cortina, but the bonnet used to pop up now an then on the highways &byways.Darnet would nonchalantly &calmly pull aside & the person in the front outside passenger seat would rush out &slam down the bonnet a few times until it stayed put.
Another time circa 1974 Darnet and I went to a dilipated & deserted Mausica Teacher's College. The Villa was a complete mess with rats &cockroaches suddenly scampering under garbage @our approach.Fair Haven did not fare better and we had to beat a hasty retreat to escape the stench of decomposing rodents,&God knows what else, maybe larger mammals? But ,like the rose that survived Katrina, and like the ancient Bristlecone pine, there were two Croton plants right there outside the Haven's entrance.remember these plants from way back when @initation time we had the memorable Garden parties.we dressed in our jackets&ties, with well polished black shoes for this auspicious occasion, only to be greeted by the 2nd yrs presenting us with forks &spades to prepare the muddy, sticky ,clayey soil.need I mention that we were a sorry bunch of mud colored Gardeners.
Next we proceeded to Mayfair Mansion expecting a disaster.Disaster it was indeed just like the 2 aforementioned residences..maybe worst...but we entered nevertheless as Darnet wanted to see Beck's room,&also Selwyn Thompson's, Roy Orr's &his.we separated for a while when suddenly I heard Darnet's excitedly shout out:'Black Belt(my name inEciaf)come & see this"
I hastened my steps, but cautiously, knowing the situation that we encountered before, expecting something filthy or nasty.indeed the common room was a disaster, but Darnet pointed @a corner ,& there ,partly covered with what seemed like tattered ,raggedy bed sheets ,was a treasure trove of red and white, with mausica emblems...would you believe plates ,saucers & teacups!
Like desperate thieves we hurriedly gathered as much as we could safely carry &stowed them in Darnet's car trunk.Of the rest that we left behind, most were broken.we shared our spoils with a couple of our mausica buddies back @ ECIAF.Some of the plates seemed to have hardened remains of various sauces, refused over time ,even by vermin.
As you can imagine,Darnet was friendly, fun to be with, had a flair for music and always the conscientious & helpful individual.i lost touch with him as my life became hectic &selfish, pursuing my dreams of amateur golfing & long distance running.Needless to say Darnet made my life all the richer. Thanks Darnet for everything....'may God bless you &yours forevermore'.
Ps   Martin Braf Braithewaite was my room-mate in our 2nd yr  (Fair Haven) & Selwyn Thompson my best buddy @Mausica.I used to take sello & Balfour to the race track in Santa Rosa & @ the Queen's Park Savannah in POS to make little wagers .we betted on favorites an won most of the times even though the winnings were meager.balfour and  I relished hops bread And black pudding sold on the grounds, done over a Coal-pot.i took Selwyn to my home in Boissiere village,Maraval where once we dined on goat's blood pudding and goat's testicles.Anyone had this?To those who are interested I'll be sending pics of my garden in Stamford CT take care all & God bless us forevermore......

RE: Carnival 2015

2014-NOV-03-1145Hrs
In response to the invitation regarding "The Word and Associates" Carnival extravaganza, I would like to suggest that perhaps, those able-bodied and young at heart masqueraders of our Mausica fold would consider lending support to "The Word and Associates" by choosing to join them.
We know that Carnival is a time when revelry making allows us to meet every need of heart, soul, mind and body. So, regular Carnival lovers/seekers why not seize this opportunity to enjoy a mini reunion?
What better opportunity do we have, as elders, to show our solidarity and to be exemplary models of appropriate conduct and self respect? I think that this may be a rare chance to act as a unified force in celebrating camaraderie in a dignified and  respectable manner.
Thanks for extending the invitation and for giving us an alternative, Felix. A moment for us to revisit and enjoy memories of tradition in the past.
Peace,
Bernadette

What news of Maurus Allum?   he is famous for not replying to( my) e mails.   Thanks for keeping us connnected Errol.
No prizes for the name of the lecturer who used to say " All is not love and kisses at Mausica!" or the one who kept referring to our Ed Psychologist as Mr Duckan.   I think he was a bit naughty... he also loved to tease my room mate, Gabby.

Wow!  Thanks Errol. Thanks to all contributors to this page.  It's such a joy to check out the Mausica blog on a Friday. Thanks Sandra Lewis Borde and Angela Mc Alister who told me about it.   I cannot 'put a face' to many of the names, but just say "Mausica" and I'm hooked!  I enjoy the pics even though I know very few of the people at any time.  Keep them coming, as they enliven us.
I noted concerns that there is little obvious responses now, (Pearl and Anna Maria),and it touched me as I've had the experience in church/other when the speaker seemed to be speaking to me directly... so "What am  doing about it?'  Just this ...responding!  (-:
How well I remember Initiation 1970 when, as a 'Fresher", I was indoctrinated into MAUSICA.   Memories are mixed...I had fun, and w,uldn't have it any otherway, but knew that there many who just lived for it to be over!     Even now I remember being told to " Wipe off that smile and put it in yuh pocket.!"   Thank God, I have many smiles to take out of my 'pocket' and share.  I especially admired people like Marcelline Ward R.I.P. aka Elke who seemed to take Initiation in good stride, and was well loved. I bring away many blessings from Mausica and Initiation was just the beginning.  Two quotes that became my life line were uttered by empathetic Second years  " This too shall pass." impacted on me as well as:   "The darkest watch of the night is the one before the dawn, and relief is often nearest when we least expect it."    Thanks Dhanpatie Lalla and others (69-71).   (-:     I have been able to live those assurances, and to share them with others throughout my teaching career (1970-2011) ...and to this day.  Wow!!!!!
So there! I've done it.
By the way (actually it's not by the way because it's on my mind), I love the idea of Reunion 2015 being in Trinidad.   Going to Monsterrat, Jamaica or some other Caribbean island - all inclusive is great but TRINIDAD!  GREATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   There I've said it.    All the best to the organizers. You have been doing a good job.
Blessings...

Although we had a mild summer 2014, we made the most it. Here are a few of our memories.
In the first picture - Brenda Wilson, Arthur Small, Jackie Knox, Winsley Belille, Barbara Mendez, Brenda Alexander are at Jackie's home liming.
We spent a few days in Vancouver as guests of Selwyn Jacob, who showed us the sights of this beautiful city which he calls home.  Joan Kydd joined us in Vancouver, but did not go to Alaska with us.
Bernadette Pierre who also lives in Vancouver made some delicious meals for us and accompanied us north to Alaska.
Looking forward to reunion 2015.

I have been wondering why all of a sudden contributions to the blog have lessened to put it mildly. Last night I was in conversation with a 'fellow' Mausican and she told me that she no longer receives it. It then dawned on me that when you suggested a few months ago that persons indicate their method of receiving or whatever it was, I can't remember for sure, maybe many did not respond. I think you should look into that because there must be a reason for the 'fall out.'

Thanks Errol for the  pics -- for the memories,   pure nostalgia...
Personally, I owe so much for who I am,  and whatever achievements gained to the Mausica experience.  At age 67, I am still guided by many of the sayings of the lecturers:
Harry Jo:
'You can TRULY teach them ONLY if you love them. If that infant learner is  crying with dribbles all over; having wet his/her underclothes etc. and you can give her a good hug without feeling repulsed, you are in the right profession. (lecturing in the 3Ps course at the beginning of Year 1 of the Programme)
'This too shall pass'. (At morning assembly, unable to sing or give a speech. much to the mirth of all, especialy the Year II body)
If you are troubled over a matter, put it on the stage and let it play itself while you work at making sense of it and assessing your own role
'Let the damn thing grow...'
I want to see my chairs back in place in perfect order' (the morning after a fete in the Hall)
Mrs. Cuffie:
Concept learning is key. Think of the Mausica curriculum as 'curricular'; 'co-curricular', and extra-curricular' (preparing for teaching practice)
Mrs. Ahylia Mohan:
"Never beg for mercy: always demand justice' (her response to me when I failed to meet a deadline for submitting a literature assignment,  and asked for an extension)
Mr. Maundy:
'Let me see how I can help'  (assisting with preparation for teaching practice)
Ms. June Joseph:
' Well I never... dont you worry...  .. you will learn the music notes.... just begin by enjoying the music' (during her many enjoyable choir practices)
my conclusion:  A TEACHER EDUCATOR IS A 'MIDWIFE' TO THE TEACHING PROFESSION
Gwendoline Peter-Williams 1967-1969

RE: MTC Reunion 2015

2014-SEP-25-1503Hrs
Hi Errol,
I hope all is well. Thanks again for keeping us in touch with each other.
PLANNING HAS STARTED AND IS ON-GOING!!!
The committee has been meeting since before the Brunch, where overwhelming support was expressed for Reunion 2015 to be held at an all-inclusive resort. The islands suggested were narrowed down and we had to wait on the release of prices for July 2015. These became available this month.
Details are being finalized with a long-standing travel agency who we are certain will negotiate an acceptable package comparable to previous reunions. RE: Living Our Legacy

2014-SEP-22-0341Hrs
My Fellow Mausicans,
It's 2:40 a.m. Monday in Atlanta, GA.
I couldn't sleep. I was tossing and turning. I was dreaming about our 2015 reunion and decided to get up and share my thoughts about this event.
I read the Daily Word. It said, "A whisper of inspiration guides my thoughts and actions as I drift to new experiences, ways of thinking and patterns of living. I am ready for new horizons."
My Fellow Mausicans, let us have our reunion in sweet TNT. Here are my random thoughts. It will be bigger and better than going overseas. The templates of a TNT reunion are already in place.  Let's make some changes here and there.  Let's solicit corporate, group and individual sponsorship to underwrite some of the costs. Yes, many Mausicans are now on fixed income. No more"$330.00, adjusted for inflation and increments over the years. We have spent millions of dollars with Carib, Stag, Angostura, Fernandes, WITCO, Maritime, Guardian Life, Cannings, Neal and Massy, HiLo, Tru Value, Southern Sales, Ishmael Khan, Kentucky and so many more businesses. It's time dey run something. The Guapo Beach Facility should be finished by now. Skip the breakfast in San Fernando Hill. De Point possee will be happy to have us again to show off their new facility. Let's give the remains of Mausica a decent burial. Organize a Grell Cup clean up. Paint a mural in the auditorium. Lay a memorial plaque. Inform, via the blog, about the planning meetings. New heads, eyes and ears could bring new ideas and solutions to the process. What is the projected budget for Reunion 2015? How can we reduce the costs per capita. Can we stage a Variety Concert at the Performing Arts Center or other venue to offset some of the costs, make a profit and Leave a Financial Legacy.
Mausicans mastered "Thinking Outside The Box". We can still do it today. Let's continue "Living Our Legacy" so that we could leave a lasting legacy.
Aye, hear nah man, is 3:28 a.m. Ah goin an sleep. I'll be in TNT 10/9 thru 10/22. Ah comin for my great aunt's 100th birthday party, in Point. Gizmo, Bernice, Ray and Cutty we go fire one.
As usual,
Rodney Foster, 66-68.

How I wish we could open up the blog to new creative pieces from all of us. Observations on daily life can help us keep the brain alive. I have retrieved(actually the techie in my friends office did) all the written material from my Vista that died, but putting the thumbnail sized disc in and downloading a piece seems like a waste since no one seems to care.
What lessons has life taught us in addition to waiting for death? I for one, would like to hear.

Muy Interesante, there was only one posting on the blog this past week.  What is the message here?  In these days in my beloved country, withdrawal of enthusiam and non-participation could be sending the message that there is a "silent protest" or a "retreat."  What's up peeps?
To the Perryman family, which gave Mausica two of its members, please be assured that our prayers are with you as you continue to journey without Daddy.  He and my Dad were friends in my very early years.  A jovial man, who had a hearty laugh.  In those days Daddy always had friends over at times to imbibe, and I remember Mr. Perryman. My dad is now 89 and really slowing down after a stroke and hip replacement, but rallying on.  I know what it feels like to see parents who were once so active and always on the move and independent become inactive and dependent.  Those of us in this position have to go down into our gut and gather strength from that GOD-place.  Take care all and I do hope that the reunion arrangement are settled soon.   Maria

Greetings all. I have never visited Montserrat, and from all accounts it is a beautiful  island. However, after researching  it, and chatting with a relative who visited Montserrat twice, ( pre and post eruption) I am convinced that it is not THE venue for the 2015 reunion. I fully endorse Jamaica  as the venue for 2015.

RE: Venue for next years Reunion

2014-AUG-16-2000Hrs
My suggestion for next year gathering is the northwest coast of Jamaica. The area between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios offers great facilities and opportunities for us to entertain and be entertained. Rose Hall, Falmouth, and Runaway Bay are areas with exceptional facilities. Sandals' Carlysle, Royal Caribbean and Montego Bay, located in the area, are all available to the guest of any of the Sandals hotels.
Although I believe that Montserrat is a destination worth visiting (been there twice, prior to the eruption), I am concerned that getting in and out of the island could pose some challenges for us. On the other hand, getting back to Montserrat will give me an opportunity to seek old friends who I met some time ago.
Just my opinion.

I never think of Ms Edwards( Aunty Dolly behind her back) without remembering LA SORORITE which she established with some willing Pioneers to foster the social graces.   I last saw her at the 2003 Reunion when we had a gathering in Trinidad..   I believe it was at that time we took the decision to meet every two years.
So delighted at the positive responses since last week to the invitation to make it Montserrat for 2015.
Elections ( September 2014) will be long over, and those of you who have seen us when we lived on all of Montserrat will be amazed and delighted at what we are doing on the 15 ( out of 39) square miles left to us.  Vernetta Calvin Smith's mother was here for a family reunion and her uncle was a friend of our family on Montserrat.

Errol! Summertime and the living is easy. I hope it is, where you are. This past weekend I had the pleasure of being in Toronto and seeing Tsonga win the Rogers Cup, courtesy ESPN. French speakers in Canada must have been pleased. Not to mention black people who have been keeping an eye on his career. Anyway, Monserrat sounds promising. I'm beginning to look forward to it. Rodney! The phrase "domesticated wild meat" is an oxyMORON. Trinis want WILD meat. Are you willing to settle for wile meat that comes cheep, cheep with a microscopic stamp reading, Made in China ? I hope not.FYI, in T&T, a recently formed company is offering tours all over this country, including to th Caroni Bird Sanctuary. So make time to come and be a tourist in Trinidad. Google "Experience T&T 2014 Tours" and see what you get.

RE: Emancipation Address

2014-AUG-06-1952Hrs
We are getting ready for Elections, possibly some time in September (TBA)
This is the timely address given by our Head of UWI Open Campus on Montserrat, Miss Gracelyn Cassell.  I wanted to share it with fellow Mausicans.
"Emancipation Day Address 2014
Today we are again enjoying the August Monday public holiday.  Whether we realise it or not, it is a significant milestone in our history.  Many events have taken us to this point where we stand on the verge of general elections, something that would not have been possible prior to Emancipation.
Dr. Curtis Jacobs explains that “the observation of Emancipation in 2014 takes on a special meaning.  Like the first Emancipation in 1834, August 1 came on a Friday.   This year has been 180 years since our British rulers decided to buy out the property rights that the planter class held in our ancestors as at July 31, 1834.  Collectively, the British Parliament voted 20 million pounds sterling to compensate the planter class for their property rights in our ancestors.  In 1834, this was forty per cent of Britain’s national budget.
Very little of this money ever reached the British Caribbean, as much of it went to pay the planters’ debts and to invest in the new emerging industries in Britain and elsewhere.   Of course, our ancestors received no compensation for several centuries of forced, unpaid labour.  As the Moyne Commission report pointed out, we were not prepared for Emancipation and were, for all practical purposes, placed in a state of benign neglect for one hundred years.
Emancipation 2014 is being observed against the backdrop of a systematic campaign in the Anglophone Caribbean for reparations, for Britain to acknowledge its black debt and make due recompense.   This process is ongoing.
Emancipation 2014 is also being observed against the backdrop of the upcoming elections.   The right to vote, to choose our own path, is one of the most important achievements along the road that our ancestors took their first, halting steps.  This right was achieved after more than a century since emancipation, and it required a workers’ rebellion in the entire British Caribbean that forced our British rulers to sit up,  take notice, and accept that it had a responsibility towards the people in its Caribbean possessions.
Today, we tend to take this right for granted, but this right was only granted to the people of Montserrat in 1951, 117 years after Emancipation.  It was not a right we have enjoyed as a matter of course.  There are many people still living in Montserrat today who came of age but did not have the right to vote as we do today.
With this right to vote come several other freedoms, among which is the right to choose our own leaders to represent us in the highest public forum in our country.  We are also accorded the right of freedom of expression, the right to speak our minds without fear of arrest and imprisonment if our views are not in accordance with the official position.  There may be repercussions to exercising this right to freedom of expression in a country like ours where people are not comfortable with rocking the boat.
But our present political and electoral system is the product of the recent history of our island.  Faced with the disruptions of our social life after a major natural disaster, our leaders devised a system where each registered voter is afforded the right to nine votes.   We have some 30 persons presenting themselves for public office and we are faced with the issue of choice.  Emancipation 2014 has met us debating who should be granted the right to represent the interests of the people in the highest public forum in our country.  To entrust a fellow citizen with the responsibility to represent our interests government is a right that borders on the sacred, both on the part of the voter and the prospective candidate.  It is not to be taken lightly.   The voter is expected to make his choice on the basis of his or her careful consideration of the abilities and record of each candidate before casting the 9 votes.  The candidates are expected to have carefully examined their conscience to decide whether they are competent to represent the people.  They are expected to have set aside their personal interests in favour of the interests of the people as a whole.
Unfortunately, very often our elected officials lose sight of the reasons they are elected.  They put themselves up for election as representatives and servants of the people but may find themselves succombing to the power of the position and in short order instead start seeing themselves as masters.   Both our people and our elected representatives must be vigilant in suppressing this behaviour.
As we observe Emancipation in 2014, it is fitting that we reflect on the road we have travelled.  It must be a time to celebrate our victories and reflect on our failures, resolving never to repeat past mistakes but learning from them. The upcoming elections should be a celebration of the achievements since that first Emancipation day.”
A Happy August Monday to all!
Gracelyn Cassell"

I am indeed very happy to read about the consideration to change the venue for the next reunion.
I cast my first vote for Montserrat. I just researched the national foods of the country and would like to sample some goat water from a calabash and wash it down with one of the local beverages --- cashew or papaya juice.
Let's go and look for our big sister, Pat.
On the other hand, if it is decided to stay in Trinidad, that would be all right too. There are several sites that I have not Visited e. g. Caroni Swamp, the bird sanctuary or areas further East
Graham, see if you could get some domesticated wild meat. Tell the authorities that the animals volunteered their services when they heard that the Mausicans were coming.
Let's keep on Living the Legacy.

I really do like the idea of Montserrat as a venue for next year's reunion.  This will be an amazing experience.  I have been to Montserrat twice and I really do think that it could work. It is a beautiful island and you all know that Mausicans could create a fete and a good time anywhere we go.   I guess the vote is on.  I vote for Montserrat. I see an intimate setting and  a place where we will really cement the family atmosphere.    I will have a problem with any mid-july dates but that does not mean that the Reunion cannot happen in Montserrat.  If Montserrat is chosen I will have to work it out. I already have a committment.  I coordinate vacation camps and just completed one and have been asked to prepare for next year.  If Montserrat is chosen, I will have to look at the dates and see if the company will agree to begin camp later in July and go into August.  Maria

Errol,
I hope this reaches you in time for this week's blog, but next week is not too late.  From July 13- 20 we celebrated the 9th Calabash Festival and we have started planning to make 2015 the best ever, to celebrate our 10th.July 2015 also marks the 20th year of the start of volcanic activities on Montserrat... don't panic!  the volcano has been quiet since February 10th, 2010.  I am thinking that this is the Caribbean island for the 2015 Mausica Reunion. Check the link below and visit these sites:
montserratcalabashfestival.com (hear Pat " belonger" Ryan singing her calabash calypso! as you visit the Photo gallery)
We are moving into the production phase of our geothermal energy programme, rebuilding our country, with lots of opportunities for investments.  But check it out.  Mausicans will be able to participate actively as a guest group in our activities.
will give you an idea of what's happening on a daily basis... including the lates on the current election campaign.  I am now the only Mausican whose home base has not experienced a Mausica Reunion, so MAUSICANS... get on board.  The planning has to start now!  Blessings, Pat
ps Calabash Festival always takes in July 18, the anniversary date for the volcanic eruption.

RE: Remembering Sydna

2014-JUL-24-2124Hrs
Dear Errol
Condolence to the family and friends of Sydna. My prayers go out to her mom Majorie, brother Angus, son Kern, daughter Keisha, and their dad Clive. Peace be with them. My friendship with Sydna lasted 44 years (1970-2014).
At the 2007 Mausica Reunion in Tobago, she and I shared a room. During that time I got to know her even better. She is a very caring person. She is the reason for my callaloo now tasting like 'mammy used to make it'.  She taught me the secret at 2007 Reunion, and I am a pro at it now.
Good bye my friend. May your soul rest in peace.
I am sharing a pic of Sydna with the Mausica family. It was taken at the picnic in Eisenhower Park during the Big Apple Reunion in 2011. She is wearing the Mausica cap with dark shades and a figured blouse.

Really saddened to hear about Sydna's passing.  As I mentioned to Joan when she called me to inform me of her illness last week, that I always saw Sydna as a tall, strong woman possibly of the tribe of Amazon women, maybe because I was short.  I always had to look up to her.  I always did.  We need to cover her children, her mother and her family with our prayers and good thoughts.  We pray that this new journey on which she had embarked is smooth and filled with welcomes,  smiles and bright sun shiny days.  I am sure because for me she was a gentle soul, she also had the gentlest smile and eyes.  Rest in Peace My Sister. RE: BRUNCH/REUNION 2015

2014-JUL-17-2319Hrs
Hi Errol,
Your efforts at keeping us in touch with each other continue to be highly appreciated.
Thanks to the almost one hundred alumni  who attended the Brunch at the VIP Lounge of the Hasely Crawford Stadium. This occasion provided another opportunity for some of us to reconnect with college mates whom we did not see for over forty years in some cases. In fact there were some persons who were attending a gathering of this kind for the first time and who vowed that they will not miss the next one!
Of course, Reunion 2015 was the topic of much lively discussion. While approx. one third of those present would like the next reunion to take place on a cruise, the overwhelming majority were in favour of an all-inclusive resort in another Caribbean island. Some islands were suggested.
Since we would want the reunion to have maximum attendance, the Planning Committee is swayed by this overwhelming response and has decided that Reunion 2015 will be held at an all-inclusive resort. No details can be given as yet as prices for July 2015 will not be available before  the end of August-September 2014.
Please share this information and look out for details in subsequent emails. Colleagues are reminded that if they want to continue receiving these weekly emails they must inform Errol.
Be safe and enjoy this time of the year.

RE: Sad News

Errol
Sydna (Belgrove) Grell 68-70 passed away this afternoon Wednesday after suffering a massive stroke last week. Her home was destroyed by fire about a month ago and  members of the Mausica 50th Reunion committee had visited to empathize with her.
May she rest in peace

RE: Inspiration

2014-JUL-14-2224Hrs
Dear Literary Friends,
The World Cup inspires people to do all sorts of things, some to bite and some to write:

THE BITE
By Felix Edinborough
The mouth was large and opened wide
A blind man could see deep down inside
The teeth were sharp and clean and white
They sure displayed a lovely sight

The eyes were bright and spied the prey
There was nothing to stop it from having its way
The head was tempted to make a lunge forward
To resist such a prize would deem you a coward

Temptation rose and hunger increased
The mind got cloudy and conscience ceased
O what a shoulder! An inner voice did shout
It’s just the size for a hungry mouth

Throwing caution to the wind and no referee in sight
The jaws could not resist that luscious bite.
