RE: spice isle 2009
2009-Jan-12-1007hrs
Hi everyone,
The date for registration if drawing close, but I still have a question outstanding - "why is the registration the same price as the gala?"
So far the events total $310. US, that is excluding the trip to Carriacou. Airfare is around $700. Cdn. Hotel might be about $240. US. (single).
Any thoughts?

My Mausica Family,
Greetings from New York..On behalf of Mausica Teachers' Alumni & Friends, I wish you all the best for this New Year. A very challenging year ahead for us all and we pray that those who are employed remain employed in this crippling economy. We should pray for our sons and daughters and do remember that we are indeed our brothers' keeper! Happy New Year to all.!
The Mausica New York Chapter just celebrated our 15th year of existence.with a gala Holiday party. We are proud to reach our fifteenth year of existence and were happy to have in our midst, Felix Edinborough and Yvonne Francois (who were visiting.)
We have lost some of our key members, among them our past President, Michael Dudley Dickson , still fondly remembered. Joan Awai, Lionel Henry, Hudson Phillip and Carlston Grey have all relocated outside New York State. So we remain with a handful of Mausicans: Mary Modeste, Elmo Phillip, Myrtle Dickson and Cliff Bertrand. We hope Melvina Dick will jump on our bandwagon!. However, with the help of our irreplaceable, hardworking and motivated "Friends" we continue to push on with our goal of raising funds to give tuition awards to our High School graduates in our tri-state area. We distributed three awards this year in the name of The Michael Dudley Dickson Memorial Award.
I am definitely coming to Grenada in July and I am happy to see the itinerary of activites. Grenada ( Elmer, Croty and Megan) here I come!! Regards to Ancil Ash.(I haven't seen you in umpteen years)..I hope to see JP (Joan Parris) Pearla James, Merdith Osbourne, Kay Cyrus, (Villa Nova buddies) among all others of course.
Regards,
Bernice Warrick- Tarradath (Buzzie)

Dear Errol,
Hallmark Investments is private limited company incorporated under the Grenada companies Act, 1994 (no 35 of 1994) and is owned by my wife and I. It is a shell company, that is a company which has no assets or liabilities and has done no business. It was accordingly convenient to use it to receive the Reunion Funds.
Here's how it will operate: For the Reunion the directors of Hallmark will be Elmer Roberts, Gilbert Roberts (Elmer's husband) Megan Welsh, Alphonsus & Joyce Antoine. All funds will be deposited into this company's account and cheques will be drawn on that account to meet Reunion expenses. This will require two signatures of any of the five directors.
Do feel comfortable Errol to follow-up if this does not quite cover it.
Fraternally Yours,
Alphonsus

His address is spiceseven@comcast.net .Is there any Grenadian helping with plans for the reunion there? Do you have an itinerary? I think John Wright ('67-'69) has moved back there now, but I'm not sure. Let me know if I can help.

This is a wonderful way to start the New Year... so many messages on the blog. Brenda, I always thought the word was pWeffen but we got the message anyway. Want to say that Mausica is about all Mausicans who feel the glow when they meet a fellow Mausican previously known or not. There are probably some pioneers who are yet to feel it and I am in touch with later Mausicans , at least one whom I am yet to meet face to face, who definitely radiate the glow. let's just all enjoy the feeling and pass it on to the second generation who have begun to join their parents at the reunions.
Love and blessings to all... Grenada here we come! pat. ps: Aunty Daph is a multi faceted phenomenon... you just take her as she is, love her and not waste time trying to unravel her... bear in mind the poem of the 3 men from Hindustn who went to see the elephant though all of them were blind: each got a different impression, none of which was either wrong or completely right! AH gorn!

My fellow Mausicans
We have just celebrated the birth of Christ and in 2009, let us continue to look forward in spite of the wars and the demise of the environment (Macueripe included).
In our search for aquatic nirvana, we (my swim club) have now invaded the playground of the idle rich and pay a boat to go to Scotland Bay.....even so....
Trinidad is still paradise.
Happy New Year.

2008-Dec-22-1241hrs
Blinding snow (ah couldn't even see de street signs, so ah drive by radar) did not keep a group of us from celebrating at the home of Winsley Belille and his charming partner Theresa. The vehicle which contained our group, literally inched its way to the Belille home. We gettin snow in we peffen! But as usual, the cold outside did not chill the Mausica warmth inside. I believe tha t Tom would submit pictures of how we ate, partied, ate and partied. For the first time, the fellas outnumbered the females - Arthur Small, Conrad Thomas, Ainsley Belille, Richard Claude Maurice, Claude Maurice, Maurus Allum, Winsley Belille, Brenda Alexander, Florence Sorias, Yvonne Murray. In addition we had friends and partners/spouses of Mausicans. Arthur pretended he had back problems, I guess that was to keep the women off. Sorry Tom, ah din know how to beat de iron in time - ah go learn fuh Grenada.
Interestingly we spent 5 minutes discussing the following, "The Pioneers feel that Mausica is about them!" and "Understanding / misunderstanding Mrs. Cuffy"
Next get together is set for Caribana Saturday - backyard afternoon/evening bbq at Ainsley Belille's.

Hi Errol,
On behalf of the group that planned the Cascadia event allow me to thank everyone who responded to the pre Reunion call. The response to the event was pretty good. There were approximately one hundred and fifty persons present. Our hope is that at least double this number will go to Grenada. Mausicans do put things in place to be on a flight to Grenada next July. Send in your registration by February.
We appreciate the positive comments about the event. It was truly a wonderful experience for the organizers. We had our ups and downs as we planned but it was all worth it in the end.
THANKS FOR ATTENDING AND FOR YOUR POSITIVE COMMENTS. GRENADA, HERE WE COME.!!!!!

I was up in Long Island and on Sunday 14 Buzzir (Bernice Taradath) invite me to a Mausica dinner and to tell you the truth it was great. Although it was cold cold outside inside had a lot of human Mausican warmth. TDhe only other pioneer who was there was Yvonne Francois - Pilgrim from President's Corner, but you knopw they dont have to have nobody from your year for you to enjoy yourself among Mausicans so I feel comfortable and at home and I drink nearly a whole bottle of wine before I dine then we start to dance so you get the staggering picture? As to Grenada, Howard Spencer went to Grenada a week after the Trinidad event and he offered to do some checking for us. I hope that Howard is online so that he could give us some idea of what he found re: the guest houses and hotels. I also gave him Alphonsus' numbers. He said that he will get in touch with Alphonsus. Howard, how did it go?
Pat Allum Ryan has also asked if any one in Grenada knows Yvonne Mahy, she thinks that she has a brother called George Mahy, she wishes to touch base with her. If anyone can give that info, please let Pat know, or let me know and I will pass it on to her.

Seasons Greetings to all. I just want to let you know that I am still pursuing the article about Mrs. Cuffie. I spoke with the writer at the Guardian who told me that she had spoken with her editor. However, it's not happening before the end of this year. I urged for a date early in the new year, even suggesting a gift for Mrs. Cuffie's birthday which is 06 January. I also spoke with Mrs. Cuffie who told me that she had had two falls which have really challenged her mobility. Let's remember to keep her in our prayers. Joyfully, Joy

Well I went to check out Fitzie as promised, and he explained that on the day of the Cascadia event he cut the palm of his hand and it was bleeding, requiring some attention...he did not think a bandaged hand would go with the greetings etc...so he did not come. I listened to this and said to the great Warden that he should not let his legendary vanity interfere with his coming to an event like this...and in the conversation I got to hear again, for the umpteenth time, how Deodath Ojah Maraj, and Noel T came to promise him a gift...and I reminded him about said gift, from the student body, which he never opened for more than a decade....
As to Hazel Ahyee threatening to sing in Grenada, I have decided I should not go after all...I dont think the Cascadia discordant notes we heard had anything to do with before or after lunch...its a matter of doh ray me fah so....you could sing or you cant

My compeh doing consultancy work with the new university, helping to put things in place. Check out the pics. By the way, from what I read in the last email, all who attended the Mausican luncheon obviously had a great time. Too bad the warden could not make it. I will check with him to get the whole story.
I agree with Finbar, that Hazel Ahyee's singing was the worse thing I ever heard in my whole lifetime. Except for when I used to stand near to Hercial Vitalis in the choir in the tenor section.
I saw some people for the first time since graduating in 1969, and it was magical just to see them. I include Maura Cooselal, Pearl Mulren, and Fabien Alvarez (Haven).
Check old blogs for my first mention of Miss Hordatt's story on ways in which children from D'Abadie say they hear people call fowl. The classic was "allyuh eh want?".

Dear Errol,
We had a great time on Saturday at Cascadia. The camaraderie was just fantastic; in fact I think it's a Mausican thing. You don't even have to know the person as long as it's a Mausican you feel the connection. It was the first time I was able to get my husband to attend one of our reunions and he truly enjoyed it. I never saw him laugh so much in three hours. Looking forward to Grenada.

WEllllllllll ! Excuse me. Who is complaining about my singing????? First, it was Allison Taylor at the luncheon, then, Finbar Ryan who does not even have a name of his own, but robbed an Archbishop. Come on.....What's going on here? I'll have you know that my singing has earned me standing ovations in London, Curacao, Trinidad and elsewhere. I AM SERIOUS! PLEASE, Do not judge me by my after- lunch voice. It is an entirely different story when I am hungry, then the rich melody, the high notes, the rich tones, the absolutely wonderful timbre emerges.I practise in the shower. The last time I practised there was a flood in Port of Spain. My agent warned about this lack of appreciation for real talent. Wish I had listened. Anyway I'll prove it next year.GRENADA, here I come. Gerard Francis, get your guitar ready! We will mash up the place. I am composing a calypso for the occasion. So there!
Love you still, though.

RE: MAUSICA WEEKLY E-MAILS
2008-Nov-30-2153hrs
I am not sure if I can find any appropriate word to describe the time we had at the luncheon at The Cascadia Hotel. It was a reunion that took us all back to the really spontaneous, creative, energetic, happy, supportive time that was Mausica Teachers' College for us all. Mr. Maundy with his wife, and Ms. Hoddart, blessed us with their presence. Mr. Williams told me the night before when I called him that he would have been there. He told me that his transportation was organized, but he did not make it. We missed him. However, all the years just melted away.
There was entertainment from a young man, of about 10 years old, who sang a calypso; a pannist and a vocalist. Some of us who formed a parang group years ago called "Los Borrachos", led the parang. folk songs and typical Mausica songs. Everyone in the room sang. I was tentative about the sing a long, but my fear was really false evidence appearing real, and nothing more. There were about 150 really happy people in that room at Cascadia. Cascadia will never be the same again, we raised the roof of the dining hall. I am sure that the manager, the chefs, waiters and waitresses had never before witnessed such a display of simply happy people
Paddy did a great job of MC-ing and between 80-100 Trini Mausicans indicated that they will be going to Grenada. I handed out about 50 registration forms and some people took one form to photocopy for other Mausicans who were not able to attend the luncheon. We also got a list of hotels and guest houses with telephone numbers, and there were many suggestions. Paddy suggested that I make a trip to Grenada on a fact-finding mission re: the best hotels and guest houses, she even offered to get tickets donated..... THANK YOU PADDY. Felix will love this, he has been saying this all the time, that we may have to make a trip to Grenada, to "check out d scene."
Theodore Lewis ("Scratchie") announced a scholarship fund in the name of Mr. Maundy. When it is established, it will assist youth to continue their education in the technical vocational field.
The fact is, that Grenada is now happening, and we have until February 19th 2009 to submit our registration forms along with 160USD, which will cover registration and the dinner and dance. Megan said that the cost of all activities will be forwarded to us at a later date.
Let me here say a big "Thank You" on behalf of all those who attended this reunion to the Committee, led by Phyllis Mottley, and included Korenza O'Souna, Judith Hills-Lennard, Anthea Permell, Kathleen Richardson, Theodora Archibald, Elsa Joseph and Josephine Simmons. Let me here comment on the absence of the men, "buh we eh have no problem wid dat. We still love allyuh. All ah we is one famaley. We eh fraid d wuk."
Hazel Thompson-Ahyee remarked on the way home " If we could spread the goodwill and happiness that was displayed in that room, across Trinidad and Tobago, all our country's problems will be solved." I agreed with her. Maybe this is the seed of an idea. My imagination is going wild here.
Anyway, we did it as only Trinis could. Grenada here we come.

I have been removed from the Mausica e-mail list. Over the past two to three months, I have been in the dark with respect to what's taking place. Jerry and Ainsley fill me in whenever I seek information. However, this is not good enough for me. I need to regain that sense of connectedness and belonging.
Kindly add me to the e-mailing list.

Hi Errol,
Please add Brenda La Hee- Sampson (64 - 66) to our mail list: nic_leon25@yahoo.com.
She attended Reunion 2009 meetings while she was in Grenada and is still in contact with the organizing committee and is also doing some work for the Reunion here in T&T. She can be contacted at the above address.
I was unable to attend the T&T Luncheon and through Brenda I learnt it was quite a success. Congratulation to the planners.

Please can someone explain, thank you.

Congratulations to the Kirkindale 'Girls' for pulling off a very successful event.
It seems like each time we see some new people. The presence of Ms Hordatt and Mr. Maundy reminded me in a sense of the presence of royalty presiding over the ocassion. Early congratulations to Ms Hordatt who says that she will celebrate her 90th birthday on January 1st. God bless her.
The singing was at both ends of the spectrum. Some were very good and some were...Oh gawd....Hazel Thompson...the words came eventually and Gregory...I heard some words that didn't exist.... But all in all another wonderful, rich experience.
As usual some of us had to leave last...just enjoying the lime...Alisford sorry I couldn't help you with the equipment.
I look forward to Grenada.

The registration form for Reunion 09 is here. I checked on the website personaltrainingprograms.com/mausica and there is still info on 2007 reunion. There is nothing about 2009. I have to give an update at the Mausica Trinidad Reunion on November 29. The luncheon is at Cascadia from 11.30a.m. I would have liked to ask people to access forms on the website, hoping that it will be there or is the website inactive? I will let them know that it is on the blog, but those whose email addresses are not on the list may want to know how they can access the forms. Conrad, Errol, please let me know if the website will be updated to include form for 2009 reunion, in upcoming events. Need to know by Friday. TQ. Reunion 2009 is happening. I should say to you all Season's Greetings and Happy New Year 2009. For me, Happiness is Prosperity in these times. Don't worry. Be Happy.

There are some things about Mausica that will forever be etched in my memory.I will never ever forget the scene in the lecture theatre of Gerard Francis of Grenada strumming his guitar and singing to Marie Louise in the presence of all of us:"She wears my ring." He even went down on his knees to her. Such theatre!
On another note, as You know I am here for my year's sabbtical(hopefully forever, let's see what God says). It is great to go on my stomping ground of Trincity Mall and meet old friends.Last evening when I was there,I met an old Mausican, Bridget Haye from Tobago(I do not recall her maiden name) You may remember she used to run her own preschool in Trincity and, for some years, also headed UWI's pre- school, where both my children attended. She is not enjoying the best of health, I am afraid.
While we were chatting a lady, whom I believe cares for Mrs. Cuffie, came by. She told us that Mrs. Cuffie is not doing so well. I have not spoken to De Cuff since her birthday last January. Bridget and I plan to visit soon. Meanwhile I am giving out De Cuff's phone number so those of you who wish, can call and say Hello. It is 640-5948. I am also going to pay Fitzie a visit.I have to brace myself for "the mouth" as he is still not easy in that area.Endless talks and laughs to make my cheeks hurt.

I missed what Jasper was congratulating Carlston for, but I'm sure it's worth my congratulations too. Congrats Jasper on your promotion. I am pleased to say that I attended one of the performances of "Bitter Cassava", it was great. Last evening, I also attended the book launch of "A Place In The World: Essays and Tributes in Honour of Earl Lovelace @ 70". The launch was part of UWI's 60th anniversary celebrations. It really was wonderful. Dr Leroy Calliste entertained us. Also in the SPEC were Bro. Resistance and other popular cultural personalities . I was able to purchase the book and get some of the great literary minds who made contributions to autograph it for me. Earl Lovelace signed on the page where my picture appears with him signing my copy of "Salt". I'm still beaming this morning.

Yes Scratchy, I think that his name was Gerard Francis. If I remember correctly he had a "thing" with Marie Louise Felice. Hope that this is not dredging up old stuff, but it is so many years hence. Water is well under the bridge by now. Many bridges have been broken down, and rivers filled in with sand. Maria. I just smile when I remember the "times" we had.

Re: eating the errors.
2008-Nov-13-2151hrs
Thanks for the compliment Scratchie. If I was not a teacher of teachers and children, I might have been a stand-up comic. " Eating the errors" came from my mother, who could not afford to have her daughter(one of 11 children) experimenting with food stock to create recipies. Well, once, I tried making sweetbread, at age fourteen or so, and it came out so heavy- still raw inside, that our dog refused to eat it. It took me a while to live down that one.
"See, even the dog would not eat your errors."
I admit, I am a much better sweetbread maker now. I regularly do them as gifts to friends.and for the TnT Thanksgiving Dinner held in Houston every year.If children are allowed to try things, they may make a boo-boo, but they learn from the errors. By the time I lived on Mausica campus, Beryl Woods was complimenting me on my Christmas Cake.
Anyone knows anything about Anna Sylvester? She was in my tutorial 1967-68.

Hi Errol,
The UWI is celebrating 60 years of being in existence. This week lauds creativity in all its forms through the medium of a Book Fair. You may be pleased to know that Effebo Wilkinson's play, Bitter Cassava, was performed by the Creative Arts Centre as one of their literary items. This sad, humourous play was well received by the audience. Congrats. Effebo.
Those of you who are UWI grads. do not miss out on the celebrations. The Programs are enjoyable.

Then there was a female, with last name Romain. Can anyone fill in the gaps in my memory? These were all Grenadian students from 1968-70.

If you put yeast in the dough and knead it twice it should be nice and light with the right amount of air without all the big spaces. Use butter in the batter to make it crusty. Tell me how it worked out.
Bernice Stephens-Alleyene
Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS
2008-Oct-31-0438hrs
Pat, the fry bakes puff up depending on the texture of the dough, and how much baking powder you use in it. I cannot for the life of me write out a recipe, its in the mind as it were, but when you get the texture of the dough right, it just feels right, Let the dough sit for awhile before rolling into balls. Use a bit of milk in the mixture for softness, not condensed, evaporated, Roll them out with a rolling pin as that seems to distribute the air better. When I am done with this bake I made two days ago, I will do frybakes, and will write down step by step and send it to you. Trial and error is a good way to go. You must eat the errors, though. If not even your dog would eat it, you're in trouble. Linda

Re: touching base.... working with a green calabash
2008-Oct-28-0759hrs
Hi Errol
I've been holding back to allow for other messages on the blog but last week was a bit sparse. I guess the North Americans must be caught up in the election campaign. Please God everyone will be able to come together for a truly united country when the dust settles after the counting of votes next week. It is very interesting to watch the proceedings and hear the comments... use of English is special! One sentence can mean so many different things depending on where you are listening from.
I'm still working on the calabash and include photos of my latest effort... the fascination continues. On the culinary side. if anyone can share a recipe for fry bake ( Montserratians call them muffins) which puffs up when fried, so that there is more crust on the outside and lots of air on the inside I would be most grateful. I have tried a number of suggestions but none has worked for me so far.
Looking forward to news of the Reunion. All the best to everyone. Pat

My fellow Mausican Authors,
Please be informed that the Rudranath Capildeo Learning Resource Center in Couva purchases books for distribution to High Schools in TNT. They recently bought 125 copies of my first book, "Remember Wen?". One book per school.
The National Library also buys books for distribution to the libraries in TNT. They also have good facilities for hosting your book signings and readings. I had a very successful event there after the 2007 reunion.
My books and CDs are available at some bookstores: RIK in Sando, The Book Sauce, Ishmael M Khan and Metropolitan's in POS. Also from my sister, Monica Chapman, in Dinsley, 640-6040. I also fill mail orders from my home in Stone Mountain, GA. 404-501-9277.
Thank you for your continued support.
