Thank you all for your concern and caring during this difficult time in my life. I’m looking forward to the reunion as seeing all of you again, I know, will certainly bring some joy and laughter… perhaps even “Summer Time.”
My family and I are planning a Memorial Service for Gene to celebrate and give thanks for his life in the place of his birth. The service will be held at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Santa Flora on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 1:00 PM with a reception to follow.
If anyone of you will be in Trinidad at that time we would love to have you share in the celebration of this “Honourary Mausican.”

There was no discussion about other alumni's contributions. Yvonne informed us that the planning committee had no seed money and were doing things out of pocket. It was felt that since no one was averse to the idea of our group making a contribution and the funds were not being used, we would make a donation. Generous? Yes. I forgot to mention that those who are going to Grenada were at the meeting at Yvonne's home - Allum, Joyce, Florence, Brenda, Yvonne. Barbara joined us to give some ideas and Norville joined for the company.

There was some discussion at our last general meeting regarding a $500.00 donation however, we wanted a breakdown of the various costs to help us understand the need for the donation. As in Conrad's case, I am not objecting, I just don't think that our $500.00 will put them in the black.
A message (explaining the circumstances) should be put on the website and maybe, those attending will be willing to give another $20.00 at the end of the reunion or there may be other suggestions.

Imagine , two years ago we started to plan for a touchdown at Pt Saline Airport... now it's the Maurice Bishop Airport! So much can change in a short space of time. I wonder if we could gather some time during our short week to sing something symbolic at that airport... Lift every voice and sing? Just a thought.
The past week has been wonderful here. On Pentecost Sunday we celebrated Mass in our new Church building which will be officially dedicated on June 18th. THis is the new Parish Church of St Patrick which replaces the one in Plymouth, the now buried capital, lost to the volcano over the past 14 years. To add to our joy we learnt that our Parish Priest, Father George Agger, is to spend another 3 years with us on Montserrat. It is not at all amazing that each priest over the years has brought something unique to respond to the need of the particular time. God is always looking after His people.
Today we await the arrival of son Graham. He will be here for a short while before returning to New Zealand via one or two of the nearby islands... he has been gaining expertise in Geothermal skills over the past 16 months. We feel truly blessed.
I can't believe it is now time to say...SEE YOU NEXT MONTH IN GRENADA!!. love and blessings....Pat

Errol, I report the sad news that Roy Jagroopsingh, 1967-1969 died last week. Roy was a die hard Naparima Old boy. An excellent sportsman, he played football for Mausica. Was a Mayfair resident, and great friend of Gregory Byrne.

She told me that she did get in contact with someone at Mrs. Cuffie's home who promised politely to "get back to" her. She is of the opinion that that person is reluctant to have the interview take place. She is asking if there is anyone who could convince Mrs.Cuffie's caregiver that it would be a worthwhile venture. I sit here in Houston, Texas, grateful for the fact that the idea of Books for Grenada is taking off. How I wish I could have been there for the cultural evening, so that I could read my Obama Poem, Child Of A Tropical Mating, based on his biography. It has been made into a poster which I am selling, and I would have liked to donate such a poster to the Grenada public library, but my friend Merle Howe is not coming this year.
Remember,please,in your taking books, that "suitable for children" is a term that adults design. I was raiding my father's stack of books he got from working on the American Base at Waller Field when I was nine and ten, and so I read most of Frank Yerby's work, without knowing he was an African American, before I was an adolescent.Really bright children have no patience with Children's books. Most of them talk down to children. My twelve year old great nephew, Marco, was reading Harry Potter as school work. This was four years ago.
Children's versions of the classics, including Greek Mythology would be good. I would put the novels of John Hearne into the hands of a twelve year old.
A child skips over what he or she does not understand, and returns to it later with an "aha" which is good.
When I started sending books to Trinidad some years ago, Dr. Harold Robertson was the Consul General in Miami. I did not know that at the time, but later when we met he reminded me that I did not let him take Optional Histoty, because he already had his A level in it.
He is now Consul General in New Youk.You never know where a Mausican may end up.Perhaps a former student from Grenada is in a consulate somewhere, and can aid with ths. Do not hesitate to beg. I beg for good causes. I am not a good cause, that is why I cannot get there. A cruise to Italy and two deaths in the family ate up my discretionary budget.
I will see if anyone from The Grenada Assocation in Houston,is going home in July, or soon after.
Remember, teachers need to read too, so if you have a book that teachers can use, sample texts, perhaps;take one of those too.If it weighs too much, carry it in your hand as if it's your reading material.There is no limit on how hevy a book a teacher can red while travelling.

On Sunday I spoke with Mrs. Helen Pyne Timothy., a former lecturer at MTC. I informed her of our upcoming reunion in Grenada and our intention to donate books to schools and libraries there..
Mrs Timothy has a large collection of books that she would like to donate. NALIS has no room. She would gladly give some books to local schools and Grenada. She can be contacted at 625-5230.
Could someone in Trinidad contact the Grenada Consulate and arrange for the collection and shipping of the books that Mausicans and other donors would like to donate?

Hope you are all well and happy. I have rediscovered the Hula hoop and have great fun with it, especially on Saturday afternoons when I get otgether with some other grown ups to unwind and work the abs. There is a group of youngsters who practise at other times and I understand that some of them are really amazing. I had not worked with a hula hoop since my Primary school days in Fyzabad ! I am looking forward to taking it beyond the waist and neck over the coming weeks.
Prices in the Supermarkets seem to rise daily but you still have to buy some items and I have not yet tried making a salad with a mixture of notes of various denominations. 2. As already stated in the notices, there has been a request for children's books for a library. We are looking at books that would suit ages 5-12, preferably literarure (especially stories) that would appeal to the ethnic diversity of the Caribbean.
If 100 people bring 1 book each we shall have 100 books.
If 100 people bring 2 books each we shall have 200 books.
And if 100 people bring 3 books each we shall have 300 books.
And if 100 people bring...
The Maths is very simple regardless of your mathematical proficiency.
We look forward to a well stocked library.
We can even put some music to this to remind us to bring books.

I am very grateful to fellow graduate Joan Parris for providing the opportunity for me to be able to touch base with you and other Mausicans. I must say it is a dream come true.
So much has happened since our graduation in 1966. We really need to cement the family bond that started there and then. While we may say that we were young and immature during our training period, the passing years have created a yearning in some of us to know about the whereabouts about our friends. Those who have passed on may their souls rest in peace. For those of us who are still here we need to keep the Mausica spirit very alive.
We owe an immense debt of gratitude to you for providing the necessary forum to stay in touch. Listing my name initiated a response from another fellow graduate Feizal Mohammed who is a resident of Toronto for the past forty odd years. It has rekindled the botherly spirit and can be further enhanced by renion meetings or personal contact.

A previous item: Donating a collection of Children's Books to the Grenada Public Library: Felix this item has been discussed and a request sent. It will be appreciated if you'd be kind enough to assist us in co-ordinating this effort for us.

The situation: The Children's book situation at the Library is very poor indeed. The present 'collection' is old and tired and is so tiny that children must sit and read what they can at the Library; they can no longer borrow books. In a word, this is an absolute need. We can provide you with a booklist.

How? We'll like to send out a general e-mail again informing all Mausicans that we'll be doing this and that you are the contact person for that sub-project.You may then put together a small committee of Mausicans to organise it. Please let us know as soon as possible, whether we can inform everyone that you, or another Mausican who may be selected, will be co-ordinating this effort.

Dear Errol, I have attended all the reunions so far but I have to miss this one. My husband is expecting an assignment in St. Maarten and I plan to spend the entire summer vacation with him. Earlier this week we decided to drive to Port of Spain to examine the preparations and indeed there are many changes. I happened to see only two vagrants though. My husband told me that they carted them off to two containers at St. Ann's hospital.
When Mr Obama arrived at the Hyatt They ushered him in through a private entrance to avoid the press; Chavez was not so lucky and they mobbed him.

Alphonsus sent us an email. I got it on the Mausica email of 26th February, letting us know how we can verify if our registrations and cheques were received. In the last Mausica email someone asked Alphonsus for a list of all the names of those whose registrations and cheques were received. I think that that will be a really challenging task, when they can just send an email to Alphonsus' email address and follow the instructions and they will get a reply positive or negative regarding receipt of their registrations and cheques. Oh I forgot to put that you have to use Alphonsus' email address. Will forward the email of 26th Feb. to you so that you can see it. Remind people that they can find out this way.

You all know that it must be hair pulling time for the Grenada Committee. So let us give them a break.
In the Mausica Email of Thursday 26th February, Alphonsus sent to let us know that there is an system set up and strictly dedicated the purpose of finding out if registration and monies were received. Here is what you do.
When you click on New, go to the Subject section and type in : REGISTRATION & CHEQUE RECEIPT. Then go down and ask the question " HAVE YOU RECEIVED REGISTRATION AND CHEQUE OF US$.... OR $EC.... FOR (PUT YOUR NAME HERE OR THE NAMES OF THE TWO PEOPLE ON THE FORM, IF YOU REGISTERED FOR SOMEONE ELSE ALSO) then Send. A reply of "YES" or "NO" will come back to you. Try it. I did and it worked. Technology is becoming more and more amazing to me daily.
They have said that registrations are coming in fast and furious these days and along with their daily normal schedule, this reunion must have them going. They must be taking their vitamins on a daily basis or hooking up with the energizer bunny. So let us try to ease them up a little. Printing a list of all the names they have received so far will be challenging for them I am sure. This is why the above system was set up. Check it out to allay your fears. If it does not work. Where have all the bloggers gone?? I look forward each week to the sharing and correct me if I'm mistaken, but we ARE ALLOWED to to talk of non reunion items. My new lifestyle allows me time to smell the roses and observe things around me more closely. A trip to the supermarket to buy ginger ( for ginger beer and cooking) and carrots, revealed the 3 gems. The carrot is local, the ginger may be from Dominica ,although we are having to rethink imports because of a vile and virulent fungus which is threatening to wipe out our Mountain Chicken population... It has already done the dirty in Dominica which used to be a popular MC habitat. I don't eat this "delicacy" myself, but it is quite popular among residents and tourists.
We have just wound up St Patrick's Week and in will take up some space with a few photos from the heritage day activity at the Market last Friday.

The photos are of two views of the same marbled calabash. I now have my eyes firmly set on Grenada and each day strengthens the possibilities, Global downturn notwithstanding. Love you all. pat
This is my first try at the marbling technique introduced at Mausica Teachers' College by the late Isaiah Boodhoo, to those of us who were in his basic art group.
In an effort to do something different with the calabash, I first bleach- whitened a dry and blackened specimen. I then used a skewer to pick and poke at the dried out remains within the calabash... a tedious task, as everything had to exit via the 1cm hole left by the stem... not a wasted effort.
With hindsight, I should have used less than four colours of paint... I'll use three next time and see what results. Of the colleagues I contacted ( Pioneer group) only Brenda Alexander could corroborate my version of what happened in that Art class so many years ago. Another of my mistakes was not giving the paints enough time to float back to the surface. I am already looking forward to the second attempt. I realised later on that those who were doing Optional Art did not have the need to be "entertained" as much as we did! I had so much fun in that class!

For those who need this information. The Registration fee (80.00USD) should include the Cocktails, rental of the venue, souvenirs and everything that is needed to make sure that the event is successful. Then 80USD for the closing ceremony and Dinner/Dance. This is a gala affair and will include dinner, rental of facility, the DJ and maybe live band and other incidentals. Live performances can be expensive, but the organizers of the event will know what costs are, and need the $$ to ensure that a gr8 time is had by all. Errol and Other Mausicans,friends, It is unlikely that I would make Grenada. Too many inroads into my small accounts lately, and I promised friends in Malawi that I would visit in 2010, God's willing , this egg basket is overloaded.
I was talking with Rodney Foster recently, and he said he had not seen my request/suggestion that each registrant take a book on education (Or just a book that a child or teacher could use) to Grenada, to make a collective donation to the people of the country, and so, I repeat it here. Those who are still associated with schools and colleges, particularly those coming from N. America and Europe could easily get a book. Our bookrooms at work are full of samples from publishers. Those coming from the Caribbean may find it a little harder, but through friends in the US, they could get one in their name. Of course the new airline rules may seem to make it difficult, it's one checked bag per person, if you are going economy.Anyone flying first class could carry a suitcase full of books.
Nonetheless, books are so important, and would not be replaced by computers, except if every one of us had computerized books in every room in the house, including the bathrooms, able to open on command to our favorite, best loved passages. I feel that taking a book to put into the hands of a teacher or a child is a significant gesture of hope and renewal.
I have faith others would take this and run with it. If Merle Howe comes, I will give her a book to donate from me. I see in my mind's eye, and entire pile of books being handed over by the planners of the festivities- a bigger gesture than a check. Each donor can sign his/her donation.

Re plans for Grenada... I am assuming that the Ministry of Education there is well on board and supporting the efforts of our team as they prepare to host the Reunion and bring new faces to the island... as a matter of fact the Ministry of Tourism shold also be in on the act.
As this may be my last reunion, for a while at least, I want no stone left unturned and I am still looking for someone in Grenada who will help me track down my great great grandmother ANNA WATTS ( 1800's) who went to Trinidad and married LUM POON, an indentured Chinese labourer from GUANDONG province. Mausicans who would have seen news about the storms in SW France will be relieved to know that Ainswoth Ash is fine... surrounded by the results of a severe attack by the forces of Nature, but carrying on in traditional Mausica fashion.
I was able to make phone contact with him on Saturday and I don't know which of us was happier.

She said that to have Registration/Welcome Cocktails there also is too expensive, so an alternative venue is being sought. They will let us know when they find a comfortable and cosy venue.

Please see my message to Yvonne and her comments regarding accommodation. The event is occuring during the carnival season, so hotels have to be booked quickly. How do people feel about reserving accommodation as a group - several rooms at one location?
See my comments below. I attach the listing from those that I saw and I really would recommend the Grand Anse Palace Beach. There are 4 & 5 bedrooms available. Second choice is Roydon's. They are across the street diagonally from each other. We should try to reserve the hotel soon if we decide to go with Grand Anse Beach Palace.

This is a list that seems acceptable. The best ones are in bold type. I don't know how far each is from the centre of activities -
Victoria Hotel in Victoria - This is a fair distance from activities. It's in the western parts and would require waiting for buses etc.
Town & country in Belmont - Saw it. My reservation is that there is a common bathroom for all guests. One would have to leave one's room to get to the bathroom.
The Beach Inn in Grand Anse - Near to centre of activities.
South Winds Apartments in Morne Rouge - Nearer to centre of activities than Victoria but would still require a bus/taxi ride.
Roydons Apartments in Grand Anse - Saw this and is my 2nd recommendation. Walking distance to Beach and centre of activities
Plantatioan House in Morne Fendue- This is far from the centre of activities. It's not far from where my relatives live and I am not even staying this far. It would cost about $24EC bus fare round trip to centre of activities.
Grenada Rainbow in Grand Bas- This is in Grenville town and is quite a distance from St. George's. It would cost $12EC per day to centre of activities and is not near to the nice beaches.
Candle Glow apartments in Lance Aux Epines - Near to Grand Anse and centre of activities. Did not see it.
Almost Paradise cottages in Sauteurs- Near to Morne Fendue so the same comment applies.
