It is with interest and pride that we should congratulate Efobo for being chosen to represent T&T in Cuba. His dear wife, Lucille, told me about the achievement some time ago, but I've waited to be sure that he will really accept the position.

Re Mausica: I believe it is an Amerindian word but we never found out what it meant. Antigua was called Wadadli ,but no one there can say why. Montserrat is ALLIOUAGANA , land of the prickly bush ( acacia which we call CUSHA} Iused to think it was about the Prickly Pear ( Ratchette in Trinidad but was told otherwise)
So Hillary wants to be Barack's VP??? Sounds Very Poisonous to me!

How are you all doing? Was in Guyana doing trauma work with the families of the victims of the two " massacres" in Lusignan and Bartica. Guyana "The Land of Many Waters" is so beautiful and so full of potential. If there is a drought they can supply the world with water and their immense rain forests can help to supply the world with oxygen for many years. It is such a beautiful place, but POLITICIANS, POLITICIANS, POLITICIANS, they are beginning to flabbergast me daily. We really cannot depend on them. We have to do whatever needs to be done for our families and communities.
Those Mausicans in the 1968-1970 year group, must remember Sue Badan. I met her recently at the ScienceTechnoFest at the NIHERST Science Musuem. She is retired and keeping up to date with Life, so she was managing the activities. Remember she was a Science major. She gave me her email and would like to be included on the mailing list. She is now Sue Badan Singh.

Met a girl called Mausica. REALLY, that is her name. Thought that her parents were Mausicans but they are not. Her grandmother is of Spanish background and gave her that name. She said that it means, "Life is full of Music", or something like that. This got me to thinking about the name Mausica, maybe it really means this, because we Mausicans are full of music. Music surrounded us at Mausica. Anybody knows another meaning?

This, that … and the other

I’ve been so caught up in reading a lot of good stuff that comes to us through MConline that I felt it was time to make a contribution, some of my concerns and thoughts on things in general.
Have you noticed how Chief Ministers and Ministers of Government in office seem oblivious to concerns which the general public try to bring to their notice, only to experience the great awakening when they are out of their comfort zone? How many administrations have we gone through since 1986 when Government was mandated to send contributions to Social security on behalf of Civil Servants? And now the same people seem to be only now realising that non- established workers have been a concern of the Civil Service Association for ages now!. What did they even TRY to do about those things? Think about it.
Last October I made a general plea for volunteers to beef up the Special Olympics Association on Montserrat… trainers, fundraisers, transporters, mentors… the list is long and the need is real. I got a positive response from the Optimists and from a member of the Youth Parliament. So far so good, but we need broader commitment. The association exists to serve all persons with special needs on the island, not only the few who are in school. Even if all some of them can do is look on at some of the activities, this gives an added dimension to their lives. We would be thrilled to see the families of all these persons coming out to give their support and give special value to the lives of their children and other relatives.
We want to organise a white elephant sale to raise funds. A white elephant in this case, is an item of some value for which the owner has no use but which another person could put to good use. If you would pass on such items to Special Olympics Montserrat we would be most grateful.
I have been following the election campaign in the USA… whatever eventually happens there will affect us and the rest of the world so I am very interested.
Before I knew Barack Obama and indeed before I came to realise that I did not really know Hillary Clinton, I could see her as the next President of the United States of America. It has been so disappointing to watch her antics in the mad scramble for the nomination. She signed a pledge not to benefit from premature Primaries… this was when she thought the nomination was already in the bag and that no one could stop the coronation. Now she wants the illegal votes… no thought has been given to all those persons in Michigan and Florida who played by the rules and did not go out to vote… only HER votes count! Her vivid memory of sniper fire in Bosnia of which she spoke on more than one occasion… an event which NEVER happened, was absolutely shocking. Her supporters seem to have passed this off as a series of “senior moments “.
The much touted Dream Ticket would be Obama’s greatest nightmare. How could Hillary Clinton have a running mate whom she keeps on saying is inexperienced and not ready to lead… remember the “heartbeat away from the Presidency “ ? Bill and Hillary could spend Obama’s first 4 years in the White House trying to bring him down. Barack Obama would need eyes all around him to dodge sniper attacks! Why does this campaign within the Democratic Party make me keep thinking of Shakespeare’s MACBETH ? Roll on November. I need my sleep!

I would love to meet more Mausicans of the later College years at the next reunion which should take place in Grenada. We tend to gravitate to our year group ( GUILTY!) but we should also try to get to know others. I see names that I do not recognise, having lived in Trinidad only one year between 1968 and 1972. Maybe for a half day in Grenada we could each team up with someone we're meeting for the first time... other ideas? Also during the summer of 1910 those of us who can be there or can make it to Trinidad should do something tangible with the young people of Anna Maria's programme. Some feedback on both please.

Michael Ransome was from my year group, 66-68.. He was a founding member of the Glory Guys. He was strong, brilliant and jovial. May he rest in peace.
Mr. Callender was a most unforgettable person. His memory was fantastic and I enjoyed sitting and talking with him. Never seemed in a rush and had a good sense of humor. It was both a pleasure and a blessing knowing him.

Another Mausican has gone to the great beyond!
Michael Ransome ( '66-'68)died on Sunday 27th.April,2008. His funeral took place on Wednesday 30th.April,2008 at Belgrove's Crematorium, San Fernando.Condolences to his wife Claire Thomas- Ransome ( '68- '70) [ I think] and their 3sons and daughter, Hayley.

The reunion is being held from June 7 - 8.. June 7 is the boat cruise, June 8 is a brunch at someone's home. Please let me know if you plan to attend the mini reunion in NY. Buzzie has tickets for the boat cruise and she wants to know how many to reserve for us. So far we have reserved 3 tickets. Florence and I will be driving to Buffalo on the morning of June 7 to fly out and return on Sunday June 8 in the evening. Anyone wants a ride?

I'm not sure if you have heard but Jerry Callender's dad, George Callender died this morning at Grand River Hospital, Kitchener. He was 99 yrs, just shy of his 100th birthday by 7 months.
He was an amazing man, an avid reader who followed with interest the politics of Trinidad & Tobago and the world. It was great that he did not suffer terribly. His funeral will be in Scarborough on Wednesday morning at 11:00am
May he rest in peace.

Greetings. Thanks as usual for getting the Word out there to everyone. Such a wonderful job of networking. I am sure that you know that Brenda and I have been working on a mini reunion with the New York chapter and the Toronto group. There is a Boat Ride planned for Saturday June 7th going up the Hudson River for 5 hours with music, drinks et al. We are planning a Sunday Brunch for the following day to which everyone is invited. More details on the events later.
I just had a great conversation with Melvina Dick and will definitely keep her updated. Please, all the Mausicans in the New York area or wherever you are do contact us so we could all meet and keep the group alive and kicking. Let us try to make this a start to more exciting meetings maybe next in Toronto, then Washington all on the way to GRENADA.
Our group still meets every month and we have just had a very successful Annual Spring Luncheon with great entertainment and a good profit. We have established the Michael Dudley Dickson Memorial Scholarship fund in memory of our former President. We continue to solicit contributions to this fund which serves graduating high school students bound for college, with tuition awards.
For those of you who know Elmo Phillip, he now lives in the New York area and is the Vice President of our group. To those who need to contact me, here are my contact numbers:

Just want to use this web-site to tell Maura that she has a double in Nassau. I went to a retreat and there was this girl playing the role of a devil in a play. She was a dead ringer for Maura, even the mannerisms were the same and I have not seen Maura for many years.
Don't forget Evangeline's husband, Reynold is also a Mausican and he, too, is hurting.
I have been in Trinidad since the night before Easter Sunday and am wondering how come no-one posted news on the website about the lime at Jack Warner's. I would have loved to see Fitzie.
Can someone give me the projected dates for the Grenada affair, please. Remember, not everyone is free for the entire summer and may have to make long range plans.

This document may never reach the public domain, but I am willing to share with you, as we recorded it, some aspects of the origins and evolution of Music education in the primary schools....

Although you are about to take your hiatus I must inform you that some Mausicans gathered at Jack Warner's on Easter Monday evening. It was on Jack and Maureen's invitation.

It was a simply delightful evening especially as our dear Fitzjames E. Williams was present (at 92) to reminisce with some of us such as Carl Smith, Fergie, Progues, Mennen Walker et al. Carla and Moze as well as Versil, Yvonne and some whose names I can't readily recall (esp.after some shots of champagne).

As usual, there was much to eat and drink as well as a wide variety and, as usual, the food was very tasty. Jack asked Progues and me to compile a directory of Mausicans who are here so that they can be contacted at short notice. In that regard I am now soliciting your valuable assistance since you are the best individual to provide such info for which we thank you in advance.

You will be here tomorrow so I shall be looking forward to our usual chat.

My name is Maura Cooseelal from Sangre Grande, Trinidad. I accidentally came upon this web site after my son typed in my surname in the Search Box on Yahoo. I came upon Mausica Graduates and my curiousity peaked. I believe I have met you when you lived in Trinidad. I know you are married to Penny Gumbs who was my old school mate from primary school and the Superville family and my famil;y Goin-Cooseelal go back many years. I just wanted to update you a bit. Shirley Romain, was a Grenadian student who graduated in 1969. She died in Canada about 2 years ago. I am retired now but did enjoy my years immensely. I love it so much I returned to teach Remedial reading in the Secondary School. I work on a two year contract. Well Take care and keep up the good work.

By happenstance I found her book PARENTS ARE YOU LISTENING? In Antigua on my way home and knew she could be the person to do this workshop. We asked, she responded and WOW! We wish she could re locate to Montserrat. Finding the right people to carry on the work she is doing in Trinidad is key... it is not a job but a 24/7 vocation. Mr. Phillips was a family friend who was instrumental in my getting in to Mausica, after my application went missing. When Mr. Phillips walked across the upper level balcony while we were in an assembly, all the female students would look upward. When we wore sunglasses in his afternoon classes he would say "You can sleep in my class as long as you dream the facts" He was an amazing man, my condolences go out to his family.

Congratulations to Efebo, I have not yet read papers for the day and did not see the news, if it is on the news. It is also very interesting that so many Mausicans are asking for a special school for young people and Mariama Children's Museum and Teen Turf: The Counselling and Activity Center for Children and Adolescents was founded in 1990 as a preventive programme and had served over 2000 young people and families since. It has survived and is still running 17 years after without any permanent funding. Last month after 17 years of trying I finally had a meeting with The Ministry of Social Development to work on a monthly subvention to at least help pay the rent. Much documents to get prepared though. You all know the red tape. I would really like to hand over this programme to some committed committee to keep it running. It is growing and is getting really too much for "me one". There is a small management committee now made up of three friends of mine, a parent has just come on board and a student who is a beneficiary of the programme and is a teacher in a secondary school after graduating from UWI last year. He is doing so well now. I can hand it over to the Mausica Alumni. I have been really consumed by this programme, which is ready now to take off, with the right help, the right staff, which I am prepared to train etc, etc. Remember though, that it is not a school, it is a safe space for young people and children to come in and feel free to be, a non-judgemental, genuine, empathic environment.They learn to love themselves and each other. Academic subjects are done, but passing examinations is not the focus. Learning and growing in faith in self and knowledge are. Academic subjects are done, with their peers as the tutors. Nineteen and seventeen year olds tutor 11- 16 year olds, and I do the personal-social development, and we gradually see grades going up.Our African Ancestors said that "It takes a Village to raise a Child" Mausicans can be that village. What do you all think?

I went to the funeral of Mr Best this morning. Yes, he was the father of Thora Best. A grand funeral it was with the Archbishop officiating and police escort to the cemetery. Our country mourns.
Some of you may have known Lance Heath. He attended the funeral of Mr Phillips and after the funeral while eating in the gathering of friends at the Credit Union office he fell ill, got a stroke, and died this week. May his soul rest in peace.

When The Hon.Orville London spoke at the formal dinner in Tobago, saying that there was something special about us, I wanted to shout out "we believed in unlimited possibilities"but tht would have been inappropriate for a silverhaired older woman at a formal dinner. Nonetheless, I believe in our endless possibilities.
While we mourn the passing of Mr. Wilfred Phillips, who was the principal of Tranquility the year my son Larry spent in Trinidad, in place of eight grade, I think of him, and Harry Joe, Fanny Ropchand and Isiah Boodhoo raising a toast to Lester. I shall be proud to refer to him as His Excellency, Mr.Ambassador. Along with Dr. Robertson at the Consul General Office in New York, that makes two whom I know personally. Again, I am so proud!!

I attended Mausica from 1968-70. One of the fond memories of Mr. Phillips is when he asked a student a question in Maths and received a wrong answer. Mr. Phillip's response :

I was able to pay my final respects to Mr Phillips at the funeral service last Friday. Several Mausicans were in attendance, pioneers and others, and we were treated to a glimpse into the life of a great man who had so many facets to his life. I was amazed to hear how much he had accomplished for himself and especially for others in his 88 years on the planet. It was also mentioned that he was to have written some type of credit union exam last year which would have made him the most qualified in the Caribbean..isn't that amazing . I think we are fortunate to have been tutored by such a man.Jack Warner spoke on behalf of Mausicans.

Guess everyone knows by now that Mr. Best is indeed Thora's father. Strange enough I saw him on tv when I was home for Carnival and remarked to my husband that Mr, Best looked so well and I had not seen him in years. He was a stalwart of the PNM, although I have not read of that much in the press. May he rest in peace.
As for Mr. Phillips, I always thought of him as larger than life.
Judy Lum York (1968- 1970) passed away recently, too. I was so shocked when Maria told me. Do you remember Judy with the long flowing hair? During initiation she held Freddy the frog without fuss while I wanted to die. She gave me courage all through initiation. We kept in touch for a long while after Mausica. I used to visit her at her home in Malick.
I came down to Trinidad for Keith Sobion's funeral a couple of weeks ago and I saw Mrs Dolabaille ( cannot remember her first name) ( 1967-69) boarding the same flight out of Miami. I almost did not recognize her until they called out her name. I did not get to speak to her , though.
I am on a retreat for the whole of the coming weekend and will pray for good health and the safety of all my fellow Mausicans and their families. We have been ordered to bring no radios, no books, no magazines, no laptops, no watches, no cell phones even. I do not know how I will survive. Maybe you need to pray for me. I do not know what it is to have a weekend without work from Friday evening to Sunday night.

I read the obituary on the Express newspaper about a month ago which reported the death of the father of Dr. Clyde Legall(69-71). He was buried at Tunapuna. I know of Wilfred Phillip from Teachers' Credit Union but could you tell me of his connection to Mausica?
Mr. Best, a Justice of the Peace was lured away from his home and murdered days before giving evidence at a serious trial. Does anyone know if he is the father of Thora Best (Mausican) I don't know what year but I met her in Tobago.

I remember a graphic demonstration of the area of a circle by Mr Phillips who was so in love with Maths. It is a tribute to him that I opted to do that as one of my lessons for a moderated teaching practice ( I got a Distinction in TP ). Does any one else remember HIS pronunciation of PERSEVERANCE? He always said : PER SEVERANCE ( as in severance pay!). He was a giant of a man in more ways than one. May he rest in eternal peace.

Mr Phillip died this morning. I have just returned from his home. I spoke to his wife this morning who sounded very distressed at his condition. She said that she did not like how he was breathing. I went to the home to be of some comfort and assistance, but he died before I arrived. I waited with her and the family until the undertakers had taken the body. The day of funeral depends on the arrival of his son who lives in the USA.

At our last meeting, we agreed that we would make a donation to some community group and it was suggested that I visit a literacy group in Malvern. Further to the message below which I sent out on December 18, I would suggest that we donate $200. to this program. Can we have an email vote on this?

Barbara and I visited Malvern After-School Intergenerational Program which is operated out of Church of the Nativity by former educators Eunice Chaderton and Claudette Antoine with the help of volunteers. (More volunteers are needed.) The students are assisted with homework and they receive instruction in reading, math, drama, guitar, drumming, computer. The students receive a nutritious meal prepared on the premises by a volunteer who has experience in nutrition.

The group receives some funding from Parkdale Golden Age Foundation, but this is not enough. A Read-A-Thon is being held on January 18, 2008 from 6 to 8pm. Guests are invited to come and read with the children. Sponshorship forms are available by calling 416-289-0903.

This is a stable, well organised program.

Dear to my heart is the idea that the group that assembles there, does something to benefit the Grenada community, in the area of education, like what Anna Maria and others did in Tobago. I have a workshop- interactive, participatory, called Journeys of Migration, that I have done to US groups explaining who we are as Trinis, and of course as Grenadians. I would gladly do it for a group of teachers. It could be used to inspire a love of history, literature and culture. Would come in a day earlier to do this during a weekday.During my time as a trainig officer for CFPA, I loved doing workshops to which an adult brought a kid. It gives a very different perspective.

Also, I throw out the suggestion of "books for Grenada". We could all bring a book or two to donate to a teachers' library at the public library, or to the Teachers' Association of Grenada, or to the Min. of Education's professional library that is accessible to teachers. We could then publicly present the books at the official opening function.

I am always stunned when I go back home, and see the high price of reading based on the cost of books. Our going theere should make a difference, professionally.

In pre-volcanic times, Rachel Collis wrote a serialized adventure story for children, which appeared each week in the Montserrat Reporter under the name the Emerald Isle of Adventure. She is now publishing it as a book, and it is a welcome addition to the growing number of Caribbean books for children. Adults will enjoy it too.
Emerald Isle of Adventure begins in Houston, Texas, but quickly moves to Montserrat. Jenny, a divorced American mother of two, travels to Montserrat with her Montserratian friend Kevin and her two children, eleven year old Michael and nine year old Tammy.
Tammy is happy about the trip and her Mom’s relationship with Kevin, while Michael resents both Kevin and the Montserrat trip. This soon improves though, once they arrive in Montserrat.
The children get involved in a series of adventures, whether it is getting lost while chasing an iguana, getting to know fishermen on the beach, learning Montserrat dialect, making friends with a dolphin while diving, getting butt by a ram goat or going up the mountain to meet the “mountain man”. Helping the police in a night raid at the beach, coping with a hurricane, getting lost in the Soufriere Hills, being shipwrecked on Redonda, and nearly drowning trying to rescue a friend are more exciting incidents that Michael and his friend Kareem get into.
Issues like race, cultural differences, divorce, discipline, sibling rivalry, Rastafarian beliefs, and gender differences in bringing up children, are addressed as they come up in a straightforward and matter of fact way.
The book is full of pre-volcano touches, like travelling to Montserrat by BWIA and LIAT, driving through Eastern villages, and shopping in Plymouth; then there is the trip to Galways plantation and soufriere, the bamboo forest, Ghaut Mefraime and Tar River. All these references give the story a historical touch which adults will appreciate, and which will give children an insight into pre-volcano times. Montserratians will also appreciate the many references to local culture, like goatwater, souse, local hospitality, eating from a calabash, a political meeting and many more.
With forty-five chapters the book is long, but the chapters themselves are short and are full of dialogue and action, which carry you forward to see what will happen next. This book will make an ideal present for children and for the whole family to enjoy, and a good souvenir for returning Montserratians and Montserrat-lovers to take back with them. The book is being published by Amazon and should be available soon.

Rachel Collis came to Montserrat in the late 70's as technical support from Trinidad and Tobago. She taught French and Spanish for many years and made great contributions to Sport, especially netball, on the island. Emerald isle of adventure is a very good read for all ages. Over the past months, on your Mausica website, I have seen seversl enquiries regarding the whereabouts of a former Mausican, named Selwyn Ahyoung. Whenever possible, I have e-mailed a response directly to the person seeking the information. Just recently, from one of your e-mail information sheet, another person is also asking about Selwyn Ahyoung.. Instead of my replying directly, maybe you can post the following , for general dissemination.
Selwyn Ahyoung, a fellow Mausica alumnus ( the 1969-1971 yr. group,I think), was my brother-in-law. He passed away in 1987 after suddenly lapsing into a diabetic coma, from which he never revived. He was survived by his wife and one son. Presently, they live somewhere in Florida. Selwyn was one of a family of seven children, ( five girls and two boys). Two of his sisters residehere in Canada, while the rest of his siblings, all still live in Trinidad. Incidentally, one of his sisters, Adsum Ahyoung-Aloi by name, is also a Mausica graduate.
Selwyn was the person who composed the Mausica Teachers' College Anthem.
This is all the relevant information that I am able to provide.Special New Year's greetings and wishes to you and all of our fellow Mausica alumni.

Dear friends

Having been silent for such a long time I felt I should at least give some sign of life( I have been twice ïnvited" to unsubscribe! I so wanted to share the Shanghai Special Olympics experience of October, but time has gone by. The upside of that is that the experience continues in the e mails I receive from some of our University student aides who were of such great assistane to us, often at personal sacrifice of time and family visits... bear in mind that each is the ONLY child of the family and that they are at University during the week... some time off was given to allow them to be a part of the support system for the Olympics. Some have told me that they are now on a short list for the games in Beijing next year and ALL of them have now become very active in support of special needs children whom they touch base with at weekends. That is so wonderful

On Montserrat we are trying to keep Special Olympics and support for special needs people in our community a reality but we need VOLUNTEERS at all levels: training, transport, socialisation, help at events... the list is endless. We have had to say goodbye to the Foote family who were a tremendous support team, Kirsten Carty also leaves us soon. Kurt Foote was our official Trainer and anyone who knows Tammy Foote knows how many slots she filled in the community. Their children,Tyler, Travis Caleb and Parker always pitched to help and were particularly supportive of our special athletes. If anyone out there wants to know how they can help just give me an e mail shout . Get your friends on island to join us too. We want to start a swimming programme as well.

Life on island during the past year has been great in some areas but leadership at the political level still leaves much to be desired. We are still to see anything of the promised INTEGRITY LEGISLATION which is apparently not getting the support of the Chief Minister's colleagues. This was the pillar of his political campaign. Ralph Gonsalves hinted very broadly, no, TOLD HIM to do a "Samson"and bring down the house!. Don't know what he's waiting on.

Most of you have probably seen festival events on www.zjb.gov.ms so i wont go into details here. I am looking forward to the calypso finals . I always want Herman Cupid Francis to win because he has a unique perspective... the Title of the song is only a tease and I wait in anticipation to see where he will come from! His voice souds much better this year and I hope it holds out.

Finally, I was very pleased to hear that Dino Baker of MSS was given a Funky Man Award last evening at the Cultural Centre. Dino had been the first to admit that he was on a negative trail and decided to do something about it. In a school culture where a relative handful of students give the institution a really bad name, he has decided practically on his own to make a difference in his life. He is bright and intelligent and a B+ average for his recent efforts is evidence of this. My wish is that others will follow his lead.

Best wishes to all of you for 2008, a leap year when they say good things happen and when, according to the legend of Sadie Hawkins ( remember the Lil Abner comic strip? ) unmarried ladies who have their eyes on an eligible male are allowed to propose... go for it ladies! Some guys are really shy and some think you are too good for them so help them out!

Happy New year to all Mausicans.

I had a lovely chat with Uncle Fitz about a week ago... he sounds great but like most of us now, he has some aching in the joints.

Many thanks to Claude Norville for the photo share. I was particularly pleased to se the back in time artefacts as wee as the photo with some of my Tobago housemates.

All the best for 2008, a leap year in which single ladies who feel so inclined may propose without embarrassment to the male of their choice! All the best...Pat

I am a former Mausican (Lionel Henry - 1971-1973), now living in Albuquerque. I also heard that Selwyn Ahyoung passed, but that has been quite some years now. I remembered him especially for his music. In spite of the years, I could still hear him play sometimes. Best regards and God's blessings to all Mausicans at this time of year.

Selwyn was in the 1969-1971 year group, and sang in a group with Lester O"Souna and others. Someone from his year group should know of his status. Scratchy
