RE: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2015-DEC-24-2043Hrs
Dear Errol,
Re: Roy Chadband (Chaddy)
As Felix Edinborough suggested last week Chaddy was a pretty big fellow. My memory of him is that he might have been closer to seven feet than he was to six. The pioneers speculated that he would be the perfect centre for our basketball team.
One morning I was standing in line in the Cafeteria, right behind Chaddy - all the while being monitored by the Home Ec lecturer, who was there to make sure we were following proper Dining Room etiquette! "No more than two slices of bread on your tray at once" was the mantra. "You can always return for seconds".
As I said, Chaddy was a very big man. When he got to the bread section, he simply opened his hand, spread out his fingers and caressed about eight slices into the palm of his hand, and then on to the tray. You could see it in his body language, he was proud of his accomplishment. I was envious, and was just about to say, "wow"! Then I heard the voice: YOUNG MAN! Put. It. Back.Take two slices at a time. You can always come back for more.
To this day, I can't remember what Chaddy said or did. I imagined he did the right thing and probably returned to the line at least three more times.Neither could I recall the reaction of other students in the line or at their tables.
Later in the school year, the said lecturer was leaving and a few members of the Student Council were invited to the Staff Room to say good bye. I was asked to say a few words. Immediately, the Chaddy "incident" came to mind and I tried to say something positive about it, but the word that came out was not incident, but insult. I am not sure how I got out of that awkward situation.
It's amazing the events that stay with you, and the people involved in them. Every time I think about lessons learned in Mausica, I think about the Chaddy episode.
Rest in Peace.

May the holiday season meet and greet you the Mausican way.  Enjoy every moment of it. To the Folk Swingers and the Folk Singers, may your holidays be bright and your new year full of hope and life.
To those of us who stood and "took in the action", may your inactions be converted to actions. After all, we are singing "nearer my god to thee". Have some fun, enjoy the blessings of life. Just like we did among those sugarcane, orange and pine apple fields.
Enjoy the pictures.

Hello Errol.
So sorry to learn of the passing of Roy Chadband. He was a giant compared to me. One would not expect that  such a gentle and pleasant soul resided in that frame of his. My condolences to Merlin and her family
Let me also take this opportunity to wish the members of my Mausica family a very Merry Christmas and  best wishes for the New Year.

Roy Chadband and I were students together at UWI. What a wonderfully 'cool' guy he was... always approachable, easy to chat with.... always had a 'a no problem' response to dealing with difficult situations. I did not see him often over the years, but when I recall my student days at UWI, it is with much nostalgia that Chadband (that is how we called him) comes to mind.
Rest in peace, brother.

I am sorry to hear about Roy Chadband. When he came to Mausica he looked so naturally strong you did not think he could even get sick. I remember that when he was a first year preparing for sports he was asked to throw the discus. He had never handled one before and the other sportsmen had thrown it at various distances showing their art in spinning and throwing. Chadband took it up  and held it like a stone in his large hand and flung it further than everybody.
Unfortunately I too have some unfortunate news to share: This morning, Saturday, I attended the funeral of a Mausican, Patrick Guiseppi (1974-76).

RE: Condolences

2015-DEC-10-0209Hrs
My Fellow mausicans,
I wish to extend  my condolences to Hensley Williams' family.
I recall Hensley as the consummate  Mausican role model. In my first year at MTC, I would visit him and his roommate, Selwyn Gibbs, in the flat of Sunset Villa. What a lesson in creativity when I discovered six cool Carib beers in the tank in the restroom! When I failed flushing, I lifted the cover of the tank. Imagine my surprise when  a few beers greeted me. I extracted three beers and invited Hensley and Gibbs to "Have ah Carib, nah!"
Hensley and Gibbs had the first dorm refrigerator!!
The last time I saw Hensley in Trinidad was in Arima at a drugstore. I invited him to "Have a Carib, nah" at Harry's , a  famous Mausica watering hole, opposite the Velodrome.
Alma, my Osmond High School sister, may you and the family be comforted at this time by the loving memories of a Mausican gentleman.
Hensley may you rest in peace and rise in glory.
It was a pleasure having you as a Big Brother.

I hope you are keeping well.
It has been a while  since you heard from me, but I guess by now  you know why.
I have had a tough 7 months this year and I am hoping that the end would be easier than the beginning.
On the day of my mum's funeral in deep, south Trinidad, when I spied Progues and Carol Revelliac through the limo. window I shouted out "WHAT!!!" and made my family jump, but when I got inside the church and saw a pew full of my Mausican family including Vernetta (Brewster) Calvin-Smith , it made my day and lifted my spirit. Thank you all so much. Lets keep this family going.
Please add me to the list once more so that I could receive the weekly emails.

Dear Errol,  Selwyn et al,
I attended Myrdith Osborne-Brumant's mother's funeral at the Third Company Baptist Church in Indian Walk  last Sunday 16th August along with four other early Mausicans namely Felix Edinborough, Carole Reveillac,  Earl Carnavon and his wife Ena (Perryman).  Myrdith was happy to see us even as she said her last farewell to her Mom in a very entertaining eulogy delivered by herself and her sister Herdes.
It was my first visit ever to that part of the country and I found the service in the little country church and the people very fascinating.
I also wish to say how excited I am to read about "Ninth Floor"  the play in which Selwyn was so heavily involved in bringing to the screen. It brought back so many vivid memories for me because I was a student at Sir George Williams University when the Computer Centre on the NINTH Floor was occupied and later was the scene of a fire and the student riot.  Well done Selwyn!   I look forward to viewing it some time soon.

Hi Errol,
We are much more closely connected than many of us realize. My condolences to Myrdith. I do not know Myrdith Osbourne-Brumant. However, my sister Millicent Sambury, formerly Millicent Gray, had her funeral service and is buried in the church yard of the Third Company Baptist Church.
My sister lived in the Indian Walk area for a long time before she passed. Lystra Sampson and Elsa Rodgers are also from the area.
Claire, I hope that you are with us the next time around, I miss your candor, whether I agree with it or not.
Selwyn, in looking up the National Film Board of Canada website  (https://www.nfb.ca/), I also came across "The Road Taken" (1996). This is a 52 minute film about the black railroad workers on the Canadian Railways. I am going to make an effort to be in Toronto for the viewing on Monday 14th.

Now to the Reunion. I share Clare's sentiments. Reading Euline's comments stopped me in my tracks and had me going Mmmm.  The July-August Vacation is the time when my Youth Centre does its paid  work. It is a time when my account gets a big break and I am able to retrieve some funds.  If the Reunion happens in the third week of the vacation every year and I get a contract to organize a programme for a Corporate Entity, I will have to choose the one which keeps the youth programme alive. That I hope is not a "frivolous reason."  I was really saddened by the comment.

Hello Everyone,
I must say that I enjoyed the very informative summary of your Jamaica trip.
I was happy to note that Carlston touched on "long term planning being essential".
The year  2015 started off without any word of Reunion plans so I went ahead and booked a family trip to guess where....Montego Bay, Jamaica for August 15th , exactly one month after the Reunion date..
I think the decision to go to Jamaica should have been announced way in advance. Long term planning is also necessary for people who still work.
However I am not surprised that the Planning Committee did an excellent job. I did receive a call from Angela.
Kudos to you all.
Just wanted to add that I did not miss this Reunion for "frivolous" reasons. I have only missed one other Reunion due to work schedules. I must emphasize the importance of long term planning.
Keep up the good work, ladies and gentlemen!!!
Warmly,

Hi All,
Thanks once more to the organizers of the reunion.
Winston and I enjoyed our stay in Jamaica. It was pleasurable arriving at the breakfast table and greeting or being greeted by Mausicans. There was the dip in the sea by those who cared to before breakfast. Then there were the outings. These were real outings, stopping on the way to buy roasted yam, or fruits or fish late into the night. The pool parties were also part of the camaraderie. All culminated with the wonderful final night, a night to remember. Most importantly, I know everyone by name. We look forward to 2017. God bless.

Hi Errol,
I have read the various comments from persons who attended the 2015 Reunion and I am very happy for those who derived many memorable experiences therefrom.
However, I feel compelled to respond to the remarks posted by Euline Peters. The last time I checked we still live in a democratic country and for her to describe as "frivolous" the reasons some persons opted not to attend was demeaning and uncalled for. The choice of accepting or rejecting is always the prerogative of the individual. Thanks.

RE: Reunions and planning for them.

2015-AUG-04-2253Hrs
Hi Everyone,
For those of you who had to opportunity to explore Western Jamaica, let’s celebrate the occasion and the wonderful time we had. The pleasure of our visit to YS falls in the Black River area of Westmorland was one that leaves an indelible impression on the mind. Many of us believe that this water park is much more attractive than the more famous Dunns River fall. The brave and agile ones followed the crowd and climbed the famous falls. The rest of us just enjoyed the therapeutic flow of the waterfall as it entered the sea.
As promised, we enjoyed meals cooked on a traditional open-flame pit, Jamaican style. The Far-Out Fish Hut almost couldn’t handle the number of orders for fish and Bammy. The wait was long, but the food was good.
Our Negril day started out very quiet. Margaritaville, and more bathing on the seven mile beach. The resident DJ welcomed the group and we shared a birthday cake for one of the ladies. The Conch Chowder was so good, my roommate had two servings.
But it was at Rick’s Café where the Mausica spirit came alive. Some of the visitors came up to Howard Spencer asking if he was Steve Harvey or his brother. Who tell them to say that? Howard commandeered the microphone from the lead “singer” and had the crow rocking. We had a great time, Mausica style. Ah! The good old days.
For those who chose to stay away, you missed a great lime. Reunions do not have to take the form of the previous ones.
On one of our nightcap discussions, (yes we had plenty of places to gather as a group – indoors and outdoors), we talked about our next two reunions. The first, in 2017 should be held in T&T during the week of July 17th. We believed that if the time frame is circulated early, people can make their plans around those dates.
The idea of a cruise for the 2019 gathering was also aired. It was mentioned that Trinidad may be a port of embarkation in the near future. If this becomes a reality, it may be an ideal situation for us. There is also a Canadian based cruise line that goes around Cuba. We can join the cruise in Montego Bay on a Friday or in Havana on a Monday. With the opening of the Cuban market to the US population, competition will surely drive the prices down.
Whatever the decision, long term planning is essential. Reserve the third week of July! Start you Sou Sou hands now!

2015-AUG-02-1728Hrs
Mausica Reunion 2015
I enjoyed the Jamaica reunion not just because I celebrated a special birthday, but also because of the camaraderie and warmth exuded throughout the six days.
The sites were aptly chosen and well appreciated as they catered to all - the arthritic and non-arthritic, the lively and the not so lively, the daring and the not so daring.
Negril was the place where everyone knew of the Mausica Possy and a birthday girl in the midst because of the number of times we got hailed out.  I am sure we also left our mark in the other places we visited and enjoyed.......Dunns River Falls, Rick's Cafe, (where Howard became the lead vocalist with the band), YS Falls and two Great Houses.
Jamaica, like Grenada, reinforces the beauty of the Caribbean.
In addition, the drivers were very reliable, punctual and friendly. They went out of their way to meet our demands.
Angela and Carlston you have made me appreciate even more the results of positivity and determination. Had you both and the rest of the committee not been blessed with those virtues, we would not have experienced such a wonderful trip.
I thank everyone for a memorable trip and look forward to another in the shortest time possible.

RE: Reunion 2015

2015-JUL-31-1109Hrs
The reunion was really wonderful; everything was not perfect but where on earth can one find true perfection anyway! The camaraderie was excellent. You don't have to wait to find out who from your year group  will be going you just have to show up. There were only four from my year group but I had a great time mixing and meeting with the others. Those who missed it for frivolous reasons really missed it. Special thanks to the members of the organizing committee; you did a commendable job voluntarily.

Upon reading the reports a surge of love-gratitude-melancholy-joy-happiness-et al emotions, all combined -- still wafting there in my heart as I write -- filled my core and I had to respond.  Seems like it was the best ever and made me feel that I truly missed a very special event.  *:( sad

RE: REUNION 2015 - Mobay, JM

2015-JUL-31-0207Hrs
Congratulations to the Organising Committee!
I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to the members of Reunion 2015 Organising Committee for a most enjoyable experience in Montego Bay.  Under the leadership of Angela McAlister along with the unwavering support of her band of volunteers this reunion was nearly perfect.  All the attendees contributed to its success. The tremendous hospitality of the two Jamaican bus drivers more than compensated for the failings of our hotelier.  Our spirits and enthusiasm were never dampened. While I did not drink any lemonade, I did drink a lot of water so the hiccups did not last long. I said ”nearly perfect” only because I barely managed to survive a series of attacks from a card shark on Percy’s bus and I was not even in the game.  I was just an innocent bystander.
Nevertheless, put my name down for Reunion 2017 and the “event at Carnival” 2017 and 2016 too.
I look forward to seeing you all and being with you all again.

RE: REUNION 2015

We missed you just as you missed the fun!!!
Yes colleagues, it really is as Brenda said in an email earlier this year "...the goal is for us to be together and the camaraderie will happen as it always does."
Togetherness and camaraderie were evident at Reunion 2015 which was thoroughly enjoyed in beautiful Montego Bay, Jamaica. Alumni from all year groups except one, participated in both the day and night activities which included tours to places of interest, tasting local dishes and performing at the much anticipated Mausica Concert. We were also able to interact with the President and some members of the St. James Retired Teachers' Association.
Thanks to all who attended...a good time was certainly had by all.
The concensus was that Reunion 2017 should be held in T&T during the third week of July. In fact it was agreed that every other reunion should be held in T&T. In the years between reunions any groups organizing activities should advertise these on the Blog so that all who are available can attend.
Yes, Jamaica was irie mon.

Thanks Errol.

"Mausica Reunion 2015
I would like to thank every individual who attended the Mausica Teachers’ “Family” reunion in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Thanks for the very lovely experience we shared together. The reunion provided myriad examples of virtues that contributed to making it the very pleasant experience that it was for me. There was Angela’s quiet and dignified patience as well as her thoughtfulness for organizing our meeting with the St. James chapter of the Jamaica Retired Teachers’ Association. There was also the unending hospitality of Percy and Rupert, our bus-drivers who cheerfully introduced us to various aspects of the Jamaican culture. I cannot forget Dr Mellowes’ gentle humour; the bravery of Marlene as she entered the chilly waters of the YS Falls and the universality of Richard’s generosity. At this reunion, once again, I experienced Carlston’s determination to ensure that my palate receive the deliciousness of the local cuisine.
My thanks to those who publicly boosted our spiritual development during our short vacation, our precious Jasper, Pastor Peters and Dr Mellowes as well as all others who prayed quietly. I must also make mention of the golden Glenda who distinguished herself as our prayer warrior-intercessor on our daily bus rides. She gave us health tips and shared her fruits and moringa seeds with me.
I was happy to meet our pioneers once again, and to hear Errol’s unique and soothing greeting, “How are you doing, Joy?” Rooming with Mennen was a special delight and liaising with Brenda for the concert strengthened my creativity.  Selwyn’s double pool party to honour Judith’s “special” birthday allowed me to realize that numerous stars still reside in the sky at night.
Also enhancing the beauty of the reunion were the flowers of friendship that continue to blossom among the year groups. This was especially evident during the fun-filled group performances at our reunion concert. I got an opportunity to intimately reconnect with my macomere Myrtle and my compere Lance.  I also was able to enjoy Howard’s “Steve Harvey” reggae performance at Rick’ café in Negril and to learn from Lana’s lesson on lacatan and other bananas.
Having barely touched on the many places we visited, there is so much more that can be written about the loveliness of this reunion. Suffice it to say, however, we all had a great time! I think Carlston captured it when he alluded to those deeper matters of life that we sometimes overlook. He said that there are those who “wanted us…”, but that “Jamaica needed us”. I believe that we also needed Jamaica.
Admittedly, there were a few hiccups along the way, but these only served to place emphasis on the good gifts we received. Being part of the reunion has further confirmed my belief that God did an especially good thing when He gave us Mausica.
My love and blessings to all! joy!!!"

Hi Errol,
Hope you are enjoying being home.  Please post this attachment.
Thank you.

Brenda
"and this too will pass"

. . . and we did it!
The shirts were a hit and those cooler bags came in handy for transporting our munchies.
Let me get rid of the negative first, the hotel was less than we had expected – some rooms weren’t cleaned daily, towels were dingy and threadbare, only mirror was in the bathroom, electric irons had to be signed for, the few room safes which worked  cost three USD per day, few bedside lamps or clocks, non existant beach towels, etc.  Breakfast was included and we were fed six days of Jamaican breakfast – green bananas, yams, boiled and fried dumplings, stewed or curried chicken.  Sometimes we were treated to vegetables and a sliver of fruit with the meal.  The alternative was scrambled eggs or omelette.  It often took an hour and several reminders to the staff to get our meal.
Most positive – the air conditioning in the rooms worked and the pleasant service staff who tried hard to compensate.
Having said this, it seemed that there was an unspoken decision to make the best of what we had – and we did.  In true pioneering style, we took the lemons and made lemonade.
The Sunday evening reception opened with prayers and the name tag exchange gave us an opportunity to mingle.
Each day’s trip had it’s special features – some agile Mausicans (playing brave in dey senior years) climbed Dunn’s River Falls, of note was Wednesday’s trip to Rick’s Place in Negril where Howard was the soloist with the band.  On that day Mausicans also got a hail out from the DJ at Margaritaville.  There was also a special greeting to Judith Bazzey, the birthday girl.
Our visit to Jamaica was made memorable by the two bus drivers who took us on all of our outings – they were knowledgeable about their island and they accommodated our requests for stops along the way whenever we wanted.
On Thursday we were joined by a group of retired teachers who had attended Mico Teachers’ College in Jamaica, who compared their teaching experiences with ours.
Mausica night was Thursday, the instructions were either “play or pay”.  Our apprehensions that colleagues would not participate were in vain.  Every single person took part, some in groups or individually.  After the concert the majority of us had a get together at the pool side, under the guise of continuing to honour Wednesday’s birthday girl.  This evolved into a stimulating discussion about reunions in general and about the hopes for the future.
Friday’s dinner/dance was the most “intimate” we ever had, because there were fewer of us than at other reunions.  It’s nice to see that we still like to dress up and party.
Mobay was hot, hot, hot – busy and lively, so was reunion 2015.
The camaraderie was there, as it always is.
Thanks again to the organizing committee, it was irie mon!

Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS 2015-JUL-10

2015-JUL-10-1455Hrs
I don't like the insinuation of Rodney Foster that the decision to go to Jamaica was "not democratic". If I remember correctly opinions were asked online. I don't think I saw an overwhelming response.
Thanks to the organizing committee for coming up with a venue. Too many persons in T&T operate on "barbecue" mentality. Let me explain what I mean before someone takes what I mean out of context. If you have ever tried selling tickets for a barbecue you will know how hard it is to sell those tickets before the meat is on the fire roasting. People who smell the smoke will buy out the barbecue before those who bought their tickets.
Rodney, in spite of all that I said before, I believe, like you, we have not exhausted T&T. 2017 is down the islands time. See you on the boat.

Fellow Mausicans
Best wishes to Hazel on the Youth programme and the courses offered.   I trust that by now Uncle Fitz has been well supplied with the blood of Mausicans.   From this distance I send my prayers for his recovery.
Re the 2015 Reunion... I believe it was a majority decision so let's not fuss.  I want to suggest though, that it is now time to organise an ANNUAL meeting/ get together/ Lime.   If I remember correctly,in 2003 when we met in Trinidad, we moved from the 5 or 10, year break between Reunions as the Roll call of our colleagues who had died in the interim was unbearably long...it's time for another change,  and perhaps we can try to cut down on expenses as much as possible.
A number of Historical documents re Mausica were collected for the  2013 Reunion (?)... let's look into those as a starting point for the History of Mausica.
Blessings to all, Pat

RE: Bon Voyage

2015-JUL-07-0843Hrs
My Fellow Mausicans,
Bon Voyage to all who would be reuniting in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
About three weeks ago, I relived the joyful experience of a Mausica Reunion when my cousin, Carlston Gray, my wife, Marjorie, and I went to visit John and Hyacinth Vanderpool in New Jersey. De lime was great.
I chose not to attend because I believed that the  reunion should have been  celebrated in TNT. There is so much more for us  to see and do in our beloved country. Therefore, the decision on the location of Reunion 2017 should be more democratic; not left to only the attendees of Reunion 2015.
Thanks to the hard working committee for organizing Reunion 2015. After you have enjoyed your much deserved rest, let us return to Sweet TNT in 2017.
Let us continue Living and Leaving The Mausica  Legacy.
As usual,
Rodney Foster 66-68

Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS 2015-JUN-12

Dear Errol,
What is happening about the writing of the history of Mausica? We need also to document the contribution of Mausicans to education in Trinidad and Tobago. Perhaps we can start by interviewing persons like Edinburgh, Mennen, Gwenny, and others.
Scratchy, I thoroughly enjoyed your column in the Sunday newspaper today. What a refreshing change from this dismal political landscape! You brought back memories of the huge Vert ( long mango ) tree we had in our yard. It used to bear hundreds of mango every year.  Many East Indian families used to come and buy boxes of mangoes very cheap when they were having weddings, etc. My dad cut down the tree in frustration when  a house was built on what for years was an empty lot between my aunt's house and ours and the owners of that new house kept complaining about mangoes falling onto their roof  and disturbing them. We were very sad to see it go as that tree was older than all of us.
When I got married, we planted a Julie mango in our yard that used to yield lots of mangoes, but blight came on the tree and when thieves used the overhanging branches over the wall to gain access to burgle our house during the day, my husband cut down the tree.( What's with these men and cutting down trees?) I remember, as a child, walking with my sisters and brother, the length of St. Anns Road in Mayaro, where we spent all our vacations. We would leave home with empty bags and pick up heaps of mangoes along the way, then go home to have a feast. Oh! For the return of those glory days!
Well folks. I am busy planning my workshops on restorative practices, circles  and restorative justice and in implementing international standards in youth justice.  Juvenile justice,or youth justice,as I prefer, is a specialist area and as you may have realized when the 9 year-old boy was arrested, even those involved in the criminal justice system do not know the laws and principles governing youth justice. Questions were being asked about the age of criminal responsibility and experienced lawyers were giving differing answers.  See flyer attached for your information. Hope to see some of you who work with children at our workshops.
Have a great week everyone.

Hi Errol,
Thanks for keeping us in touch with each other. Please blog this email.
JAMAICA HERE WE COME!!!
Thank you Carlston. The Organising Committee is very appreciative of your efforts to encourage participation in this year's Reunion, as well as the suggestions you have made re hotel accommodation.
Yes, we are going to Montego Bay from  July 19th - 25th  2015. Our flights from Trinidad are booked and deposit paid to COPA  Airlines. Since this is the preferred location, negotiations continued with other hotels in the area including those suggested by Carlston.  Our research shows that all the other all-inclusive hotels are way more expensive than the Royal Decameron.
After much deliberation, discussion and some agonising the Organising Committee decided that the best option is the Wexford Court Hotel in Montego Bay, which is a breakfast only hotel.
The cost per person for those travelling from Trinidad is -
Single - TT$ 10,688.00
Double -TT$ 8,209.00
This is inclusive of the return airfare on COPA Airlines.
The cost per person for those making their own travel arrangements is -
Single US$ 942.00
Double - US$ 558.00
Alumni who are now deciding to join the fun must contact us immediately.
As the deadline for paying the hotel is May12th, if you have not yet made a deposit,  you are advised to pay the full amount to Republic Bank Acc't. # 870-013-588-231 and email a copy of the receipt to Sheila Warner at sjw500@gmail.com.
Looking forward to the Mausican camaraderie in Montego Bay.
