Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2012-Sep-30-0917Hrs
Francois and Arthur Small, thanks for being able to visit with Bertie. So many of us who lived with him join you in spirit - apart from Mausica, Donald, Selwyn and I would remember Bertie as he kept us together with our Combo, entertaining on Friday and Saturday nights at the University of Alberta Student Union Building, Edmonton Alberta. "Oh to have lived, loved and be loved rather than not loved at all!"
Remember the immense talent that he brought to Mausica when he played three instruments simultaneously!  Matron - the torch light! Who can forget Bertie's meteoric rise to Member of Parliament of Tunupuna under the PNM!
May all our prayers bring him eternal peace and rest!

Thank you Linda for your beautiful literature and continued brilliant suggestions regarding our Mausican celebrations next year.
Sadly, Mr. Norton passed away in January this year. There was a biographical article in the Guardian on his passing. He had been the recipient of a Chaconia Gold medal among his many accolades.
I am pleased to say that in spite of his national and international  achievements, I knew Mr. Noel P. Norton to be a wonderful and humble human being. May his soul rest in peace.
My condolences to those among us who recently lost loved ones.
Blessings and love,

RE: Update on Bertie Fraser

2012-Sep-26-1113Hrs
Hi!  Errol,
For dissemination on your Mausica blog site:
Bertie was recently moved from the hospital in Clearwater, Florida, to the Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, Maryland, U.S.A. Then, he was transferred from Howard County General, to the Gilchrist Palliative Care hospital, also in Columbia, Maryland.
Upon hearing this, and knowing that 'Palliative Care' is also termed 'End of Life Care', suggesting that his demise could be imminent, Arthur Small and I immediately decided to embark on the very, very, long road trip from Toronto, to visit with Bertie at the Palliative Care facility, in Columbia, Maryland.
We found Bertie in a comatose state, totally oblivious to everything and everyone around him, and under the constant 24/7 care of one of his daughters and an assigned nurse.
I was so distraught and overcome by the sight that confronted us there, on his hospital bed, that I had to leave his private ward.  Bertie has reduced to a hapless shell of the Mausica brother, that we knew.
His attending nurse said that Bertie was going through his final stages and his body was slowly 'shutting down'. Her duty and focus were on achieving comfort and relieving and preventing his suffering.
Your continued prayers are still encouraged.

Hey everybody, Eastlyn here. Always a pleasure reading about Mausicans. Condolences to all who have lost loved ones. I spoke with Conrad while the body of his mom was being interred. So nice that he was supported by a contingent of Mausicans. I also spoke with Mr. Williams. Same old Fitzy, nice and strong in voice and oh so appreciatve of every call, every visit from his thousand plus children who are scattered all over the world. My gosh! we were and are so lucky! Read in the papers that Leslie Ramdoo's mom passed away. Condolences to him and Myrna. May god's comfort and support be theirs. Can't wait for 2013!

Dear Rodney and Majorie,
What can we say? In your book you would write: All good things come to an end. My Dad passed on at almost 83 and your Mom at 85. I'm sure, like me, you would have wanted more years for loving her. But we are thankful for the many spent with us. May you be comforted as you go through your sorrow.

My Fellow Mausicans,
Thanks for all your expressions of condolences on the passing of my mother.
Mammy received the kind of homegiong celebration that she deserved. It was great and upbeat.   The church was packed with several family members, her personal friends and the friends and co-workers of her five children. Of course, there were tears but the dominant emotion was one of joy and thanksgiving. Mausicans were very much  present: Andre Stephens, Felix  Edinborough, Clive Grell,  Conrad Thomas, Anthony Taitt, Claire Mathias, Lynette Thompson,  Maria Mora, Janice Barnes, Marion Marshall , Joy's sister, and Angela Cato Ifill. Barbara Davis? Clive and Mary Grell catered a scrumptious repast, on a moment's notice.
It was uplifting to be surrounded and supported by my Mausican family. I sang a verse of John Boulet during my delivery of the eulogy.
So long for now. Ah goin and get some much needed rest. It's 1: 24 AM.
As Usual,
Rodney Foster.

Re: Fwd: Sweet T&T

A recent issue of Mausica Weekly News asked what can we do to help our country. Well here noel P.norton, now quite old, has documented aspects of our country that still perhaps exist in remote areas.

Mausicans who know how, can put together a how to book on a numbe of things that people no longer do,or know how to do. those living in Tn could arm hemselves with cameras, and go out into the coutryside and document people making things with their hands, and feet- dancing the cocoa for one, and so help children today to see that they all had grand parents and great grands with their feet solidly plnted in the soilof the country. At east three geerations have forgotten, it seems, how to cook, or mend things. I am not sure forgetting these is good survival skills.

Doid Norton ever get a NAtional Award for his photography?

I think of her recipe for fruit cake, which you called the best in the world, and I agreed 95% The other five percent going to the late  Mrs. Lilian Dowding of Willimsville, and Arima.I think of the journey she has travelled, raising children in those hardscrabble times, and living to see them prospering.
Her age was almost the same as that of my Great Aunt Sa-say, who left us in 1985.She was born in 1899 and was a Williams of Williamsville. These strong old women knew how to deal with crises, shortages, and were our first guidance counselors. They hugged us when we hurt, and gave lots of unasked advice. They also knew who was short of food and managed to send something to that house, as if their own houses were overflowing with plenty, when they were not. These were the She-elephants of our tribe. The ones who led with their strength and determination, and were examples to all.Their faith in God was rock solid. They believed in us, and loved us because we were theirs.
May your mother's spirit find joy in rejoining the ancestors.

Dear Mr.  Lashley,
I am Lydia Naimool-Jones ( 70 -72) and recently, Keith Dick forwarded your " blog" to me.  Thank you.  It was most enjoyable - the good news -  since I have maintained personal communication with many Mausicans from my year body and 69 - 71 and 72 -74.  It is really a beautiful thing, especially being able to "be available" for the children of our colleagues, most of them now at the age when I got to know their parents.
I would love to participate in your blog and look forward to renewing and  maintaining contact with my fellow Mausicans.

Errol, thanks for the wonderful job of keeping us in touch.  I am a weekly reader, but rarely would I write; and it is always with pride and joy that I read the fascinating accomplishments of Mausicans.  However, I always wonder how we share the wealth of experiences/expertise we have… knowledge/experiences/expertise must be shared or else they are useless.  It is in that vein that I totally endorse Rudolph’s idea (9/13/12) about the incorporation of a workshop in the 2013 reunion or the passing on of something tangible as a group to the children and youths of our twin island Republic.  Maybe Rudy’s topic could be massaged, discussed and we come up with something? What do we say????
Thanks.
Best wishes,

RE: Another Mother Gone.

2012-Sep-15-2254Hrs
Hello Errol,
My condolences go out to Tom and his family.
On Friday night, while attending my church's Gala, I received news that my mother, Frances George, had passed. I had just donated a copy of "Remember Wen?" as a door prize. I returned to my seat and I told my wife that I felt I was going to win my own book. Just as the MC announced that ticket 1058 was the winner., my cell phone rang. The caller was my niece from California who tearfully suggested that I call home. I received the sad news that my mother had died at 8:58 p.m. I cried and smiled.  I felt my mother's presence reminding me to complete my  third book, "Passing The Torch".
All right Mammy, you will have a book dedicated to you.  Just like "Remember Wen?" was  dedicated to your husband and my stepfather, Ivan George.
On Wednesday,  Marjorie and I will leave for TNT.  Funeral services will be on Friday afternoon. Call 640-6040 for more details.

RE: re: your piece in this week's Mausica News.

2012-Sep-14-0833Hrs
My friend. It does my heart good to hear of the marvelous things our people, former Mausicans, are doing.
Your letter was a stirring tribute to the education system Dr. Williams put in place, from which all the present members of govenment have benefitted- free eduation. Yet they continue to denigrate him at every turn, so that the younger geneations may come to think that he was worthless.
On the basis of my continued concern for veritas-(truth,) I would recommend that you redirect your piece to the three daily papers in TnT- The Express, the Guardian and Newsday.
They may not publish it,because,  as one Express editor pointed out to me" Newspapers are in the business of making money" when I challened him on an offensive ad back in the 1980's. And truthful tributes to the nation's founder may not be scandalous enough. Send it also to the head librarian at UWI and ask that it be added to the tributes for the one hundreth anniversary of his birth.
You should be comfored in sending it, to know that at least one person in the editorial room, would have had to read it. Be sure to put all your degees, titles and honours. They love that sort of thing.
Give the lie, all of you, to the idea that Dr. Williams did nothing for Trinidad and Tobago, nothing in particular "for the Indian" (as if Kamla and co were educated offshore on a boat) and so does not deserve to be called the "Father of the Nation."
Let us teach our childen's children about the greatness of this man- recognized by Time Magazine as one of the "100 Great Men of The Twentieth Century".
Thank you for the testimonial to that which makes us unique in all the world, in tems of education for our people. Writing like this, you have kept the flag of freedom flying high, and gives us reason to take pride in our liberty.
Copies to my favorite Mausicans, and nieces who teach in TnT and abroad.

Dear Fellow Mausicans,
Congrats to Mr. Williams on his over due but deserving reward. I read his inteview in yesterday's papers and was happy to be remided of his many achievements. It was better late than never. Felix I can see the pride on your face. Hope there will be awards for others who are still with us.
Condolences to Carol and her sister. When will this mercilessness be stopped?
My only memory of Independence is listening to the hoisting and lowering of the flags with my parents on our Grundig radio. But on this years Indp. Day, I listened to some older folks who were present at the 1962 celebrations and what was most remarkable and pleasing for them was that Dr. Williams had asked for all places of worship in P-O-S to be opened. At the end of the ceremomies he told them "Now go to your places of worship and give thanks to God". They remarked that with all the glitter of this years' it paled in comparison to 1962's.
God bless us all as we journey on.

Hi, Every one!!  Just getting around to reading this.  I was struck by Irmin Lewis-McKenzie"s reflections on that first Independence Day.  Irmine , do we know each other?  I am a Naps girl.  And remember that rally vividly.  I think I might have still been at San Fernando Government, perhaps on the eve of startting high school, or maybe there already.  My Dad,  who used to take me to all the PNM meetings, had bought me specially made all black leather shoes which were soaked hoplessly in the down pou of rain.  I squelched all the way home that day, with every step!
What a wonderful and deserving tribute for Mr. Williams.  Progues, when you talk to him, or see him again, please give him my forever love and gratitude for what he did and gave to all of us who had the priveiege. to know him, and count him among our families.
My sincere and heartfelt condolences to Tom, on the passing of his mom. My sister, who lives close by, has been in contact with me.  How awesome it is, that God let her wait to see Tom and spend a little time with him beforeshe went to her reward.
The news about Bertie Frasier is disturbing.  I believe that he resides some what close to me. We had discovered this some years ago, and tried to get together.  But he was getting ready to do some travelling.  And we lost contact afterwards.  Is there any contact information available?  Love to all.  Thanks, Errol  God Bless!!!  Joy Barnes nee Marshall.

2012-Sep-09-1644Hrs
Greetings, Errol  and all other brethren and sisteren, and congratulations on your work with the Mausica newsletter. It was great to see Mr williams honoured. I've been mulling over an idea for some time and would like to float it now. Namely, that the planning committee for the T+T Mausica Reunion consider incorporating into its schedule   a workshop discussing the T+T societal situation especially in  lighht of the crime problem, and in the context of how an institution like Mausica, as we knew it and with any other positive possibilities, could play a key role in helping re-shape the minds and attitudes of the young people who are fast taking  over the society.
Through a workshop like this, Mausicans can bring their wealth of experience and expertise to make a resounding impact on our society and our country. We can make a massive difference and will be seen for the great force that we as a group can become to help re-chart the course of our nation's future.
Please give this idea some thought. Best wishes to all and Kindest regards.

Thank you Errol for contacting my friend Eleanor in Hamilton. She called me last nightN as I was checking into a suite inNew Orleans for a get-away weekend. No sign of the hurricane. Bourbon Street is one continuous Jouvert Morning. Irmine and Gavin, thank you. As a matter of fact Merle Howe(72) was visiting me for a day, and I mentioned the joyous letter I got from Gavin. She was able to guess who it was from, without my finishing the telling.
I read somewhere that people who fight for their Independence, work equally hard to preserve it. Those who had it donated, do not work so hard at it. That may be the answer to "what happened" to our patriotism.
Responses to my piece and recnnlecting with a teacher's college GTC friend, shows we are truly family.
Stay well all.Let this be a new day's dawning for our country, regardless of which party now holds the reins.

Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2012-Sep-07-0722Hrs
Thanks, Errol, for once again, making the Mausica weekly emails, the highlight of my week. I enjoyed reading Linda Romain's piece last week. I recall being in Woodford Square for the momentous occasion. I have benefitted tremendously from Dr.Williams' legacy. Without the advent of the Common Entrance Exam, my parents would have been hard-pressed to send me to secondary school, as they were already paying for two elder siblings at private secondary schools. After leaving Holy Name Convent, I was privileged to attend Mausica Teachers' College, then UWI at St. Augustine and Cave Hill, the Hugh Wooding Law School and Cipriani College of Labour and Co-operative Studies. It is only when we interact with persons from other jurisdictions that we realize what great educational opportunities were and are still open to us here in Trinidad.  I regretted not being able to join in the 50th Anniversary Independence celebrations at home. I also missed the celebrations here in Nassau. From shortly before midnight, I was on various planes en route from from Hong Kong to Nassau. I had accepted the kind invitation of the Chief Justice of Hong Kong to the International Family Justice Judicial Conference and thought that I should take advantage of the opportunity to continue to acquire the necessary expertise to be on the cutting-edge of family law issues, especially as I am returning home to continue my work in that area. The hosts rolled out the red carpet for us, delegates. Why can't we treat our own as foreigners treat us? From the time I arrirved, I was whisked away in a limousine to the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Shatin, Hong Kong, and the courtesies continued until I left Hong Kong.
I am so pleased that Mr.Williams got his award this side of heaven. Let us continue to appreciate, love and cherish those exemplars that we still have with us and not join in the denigration of those who are still alive and those who have served and have gone on to their eternal reward.
May God Bless us all and may God Bless our beloved nation of Trinidad and Tobago.
I continue to pray for my friend from Mausica Alumni choir, Bertie Fraser.

"You might have received the news by now that Mr. Williams was given a medal of gold for Public Service in this year’s independence national awards. As the first president of Mausica I was asked to receive it on his behalf because at age 96 his mobility is challenged. I saw myself representing all the students of Mausica as I went to receive it on his behalf. Congratulations to Mr. Williams for a well deserved reward. Let us all be happy to know that his work has been appreciated by the national community"
I join in the celebration of our Campus Warden, Mr. Fitzie Williams, on the receipt of a long overdue national award for Public Service. So many of us Mausicans can remember his kindiness, professionalism and, with Mrs. Daphne Cuffie, the co-leadership of the Mausica Teachers' College Choir.  What tremendous stewardship!
Mr. Williams and I co-authored the eulogy which he read at the funeral of our  esteemed College Principal Mr. Joseph (Harry Jo) and I have promised Anna Maria that I will send a copy to her in time for the 2013 Mausica Reunion.
Harry Jo.... Mr. Williams.... their impact on our young lives -- personally and professionally -- was immeasurable.
Two Harry Jo's maxims have stayed with me as a beacon of light and direction....

2. 'This too shall pass'

Hi, how are you doing. How are things with your mom?
I spoke with Terry earlier and he said Bertie is back in hospital. He is not doing well.
He is going back home tomorrow.

Almost 50 years(49) ago, a young lady named Carol Reveillac entered our lives at Mausica. On d eve of our 50th Independence Ann. the scourge of crime sweeping our country snuffed life out of the first born and son of Dawn Marie Reveillac, Akeil Reveillac,25. This is Carol's younger sister. We are so all connected and responsible. The angel of Death is hyperventilating. My heart goes out to Dawn whom I knew closely.A fervent Prayer is required to create a shift. I'm sorry. May God comfort you in this period of distress!
Ben(Bernice Alleyne) I spotted your presence...I have an idea I'll share as soon as it becomes more crystalised.  Luv to ALL...

You might have received the news by now that Mr. Let us all be happy to know that his work has been appreciated by the national community.
