RE: Living the Legacy

2016-DEC-28-1430Hrs
My Fellow Mausicans,
I hope you all had a blessed and enjoyable Holiday and are looking forward to a healthy and prosperous 2017.
As we approach Reunion 2017, several thoughts come to my mind: how are we "Living the Legacy",  what is Mausica's Legacy?
Today, I shared one of my thoughts with Brother Efebo. What would it take to have a Mausica Teachers' College Day in TNT?
Efebo expanded the idea to include all teachers. He suggested that we approach TUTA. His plate is full of activities at this time?
Can the planning committee and other volunteers explore the possibility of having a National Teachers Day that would recognize the contributions of all teachers to the success of our country?
On another note. I know that our DJ, Alisford,  and his son are selecting the tunes to have us dancing and singing, and falling in love again. In 2013, they gave us "Samba Pa Ti". In 2017, I am requesting two tunes:"Brias del Zulia" a castillian and "Air on A G String", a Sel Duncan bolero.
So my friends, start practising. Let's keep constructing the Mausica Legacy.
A Mausican Sistah, Annette Phillip, just called. She is visiting her son in Stone Mountain, GA. Just about 400 yards from my home.
See you later.
As usual,
Rodney Foster 66-68.

RE: Season's Greetings

2016-DEC-20-1950Hrs
My Fellow Mausicans,
May you all have a blessed and enjoyable Christmas.
This is a nostalgic time for me. There is nothing like a Trini Christmas. On Sunday, my fellow Mausican brother, Alan Simpson,  and I were present at the TNT Association of Georgia Christmas  party. There was good food, drinks and authentic Parang music provided by " D Parang Side".  The party was a good start for this joyous season.
If yuh see Alan shaking chac-chac. De man hands bend up like ah true-true Parandero. Grande boy good, boy. Carl Savary brother was on drums, Ruthven Le Quay was on guitar, Ulric Butcher on cuatro, Cheryl Charles, vocalist. There were a few others whose names I cannot recall.
By the way,  Savary's brother informed me that Carl had died about nine months ago. May he rest in peace.
Peace and Love.
As usual.

RE: The passing of Ruthven Perryman

2016-DEC-09-1714Hrs
I received a call at about 7.00am on the morning of Ruthven Perryman's passing. Having been abroad I did not know of his recent hospitalization. However, this is my simple tribute to a friend who was almost family to me.
I met Ruthven at Tunapuna EC school,so that primary schoolmates we were. He transferred out of EC, but we met in POS in the hustle for transport home. He attended St. Mary's and I was a Bishop Anstey. The interaction did not end there since Tunapuna was a lively place and the teenage parties were aplenty. At Mausica he was Second Year to me and later on we were George Street neighbours: he was at Eastern Boys Govt and I at South East POS Govt Secondary. When SEPOS needed support,  Ruthven was at Eastern for us. As a matter of fact, my venture into Eastern Boys was on account of Ruthven's presence there.
What makes a friendship surpass all of fifty years?  Some people you meet become only acquaintances.  Not so with Ruthven. I've met few people who could turn your bad day around;  who could make you laugh again; who could convince you that every cloud does have a silver lining;  whose smile you could see from a mile away.
Who could you meet when you migrate from the North Stand to the  Grand Stand for Panorama?  Who would greet you with outstretched arms to take a little wine in the staid Grand stand?  Morever, Ruthven never lost his Tunapuna AC roots.  His best friends number among his Primary school mates, brothers in a word.
In recent years I worked as a CAC monitor and Ruthven and I met frequently on the grounds of St. Xavier's where he sat awaiting Susan.  We talked of grand children and our new focus. " Angela We have to do it."  We met often at the grocery, Curepe or Tunapuna and I even suggested that I give him my grocery list since he seemed to have found new employment.
I offer my condolences to  his Mom, the Perryman and Carnavon families.  I know the kind of family man Ruthven was. I know of his input to nieces and nephews.
This was a man who understood life and lived it to the fullest, always ensuring the comfort and happiness of his fellowman. Rest in peace my brother.

Season's greetings and thanks once again for all you do on keeping us Mausicans connected.
Please allow me to express sincere condolences to the Perryman family and to the Scobie family on the loss of their loved ones. Dale's wife, Ermanda, was also my school mate at secondary school.

My Fellow Mausicans,
,
When I visited Mrs. Cuffie during my last visit to Sweet TNT, I promised the Director of Gordon Home, Margaret Baptiste, that I would ask a few of my Mausican singers to spread some Christmas cheer with the staff and residents. Some Parang  and Christmas carols would certainly bring some "Joy To Their World".  Make a stop by Mr. Williams also.
Contact Mrs Baptiste at 628-4670.
Carl Caton, Clive Grell, Alisford, Scratchy, Selwyn Thompson, Joy Reid, Maria  Mora, Progues, Angela Ifill, Barbara Davis, Lynette Thompson,  Marlene Gilbert and all the other Paranderas and Paranderos , let's do it.
In 2013,  we had a wonderful experience at MTC. What a parade of talent!. Let's do it again in 2017..
Our 50th anniversary theme was "Living The Legacy."  What is our vision?
My vision is a Performing Arts Center in the East. The Mausica Teachers Performing Arts Center..  Right there on our 65 acres..
Let's dream big.
Planning Committee, please post invitations to the meetings in the blog.  More hands and minds needed.
As usual,

RE: Reunion 2017

2016-NOV-19-0157Hrs
My Fellow Mausicans,
First, Marjorie and I wish to extend our condolences to the bereaved families. We will remember you in our prayers.
Take it one day , one moment at a time. Time will heal your sadness and replace it with a joy that surpasseth all understanding.
Fifty-nine years ago my parents and I stood on Sixth Avenue and Tenth Street in Barataria. My father, a taxi driver,  had met my mother and me there with the intent of enrolling me in St. George's College. That year the newly elected PNM Gov't had given 250 scholarships.  I had placed 252. in the College Exhibition Exam. At that time the college accepted students whose parents could afford the fee. My father, bless his soul, felt he could not pay the tuition. He drove off and I returned to my elementary school, Barataria EC. The next year, my grandmother enrolled me in Osmond High School, on Fifth Street, San Juan. .
Private secondary schools, like Osmond, Progressive, Ideal, Providence and Southern Polytechnic no longer exist. The late Arthur Murray and J Hamilton Holder should receive posthumous awards for their significant contributions. Earlier this year, a voice prompted me to call Mr. James Sammy, Principal of St George's College,  and request that I become the first, honorary graduate of St George's College. On Thursday November, 10th, 2016, my dream was fulfilled. The Achievement Day celebration was held in the Parish Hall of St Mary's Anglican Church in Tacarigua. My mother's grave is in the church yard . Her spirit was there with me, as I delivered my acceptance speech.
Our God is awesome!
On Monday, Nov. 14th a few of my Mausican brothers stopped by "tuh bus ah lime". Carl Caton, Clive Grell, Clive Ballantine. alias Poole, Selwyn Thompson, alias Sweetface, and Efebo Wilkinson were most present. Meh pardnah, John De Coteau from GTC  cook ah bad pelau. It was like de feedin of de 5,000. Marj and I bring back some to de States. We eat de last set on Thursday. We took ah drink in memory of our departed brother, Keith Aqui.
De lime was reminiscent of the good times in any of de men's hostel in MTC. Talk bout laughter and singing.
Carl Caton could sing any of de calypso from dat era. Wat Efebo can't remember, Carl know verse and chorus. De fella bad fuh days. De consensus is dat we should have a Karioke night wit only Mausica kaiso at de 2017 Reunion.
By de way, Efebo boast dat his wife, Lucille, does make de best fruit cake in de universe. Right now ah pinching away at ah black cake dat Mary make. Clive, yuh wife is #1, right now. So Efebo, Lucille have tuh come real good. My mother was my Numero Uno., My sister, Doreen, inherit the gift. Some of de girls from Villa Nova should remember getting ah piece of de black cake my mother made for my 21st birthday.
So long for now My Fellow Mausicans. TNT still sweet.
As usual,
Rodney Foster 66-68.

Autumnal Wreath
Dear Errol,
It was a pleasure to see you in Trinidad when i did a whirlwind visit to the Mausican  Planning Committee at UWI this year.
Blessings to you for all you do my dear.
It seems as though the "crossing over " season is  on our heals lately. May God grant strength and courage to all the Mausican families that had to say the final farewell to loved ones lately. My condolence to them all.
This brings me to say this:
Yesterday, I received a message from fellow Mausican Clifton De Coteau (64-66) Sunset Villa, stating that Dr  Cliff Bertrand called him and said that Keith Acqui had a massive heart attack and died in Maryland, USA at the weekend.
I have no more details. I just remember Keith being very jolly at  Reunions. I think he even brought his daughter to the one that was held in Grenada.
May he rest in peace. Our heartfelt condolence to his family.

RE: The death of Merle Howe Mausican

2016-OCT-26-2118Hrs
It is with tremendous sorrow that I pass on the news of the death of our fellow Mausican Merle Howe this evening in Houston Texas.
Here she is helping to serve lunch at her church on August 28 in honor of our Independence Day. If you have a contact for Patrick MusaibAli please inform Him before It appears in the bulletin. She was recovering from cancer and we were supposed to take a trip to Africa next year. She had always wanted to go. I am sure that her spirit will stop there on her journey home. I have been lighting prayer candles for her. Now I would light one in thanksgiving for her faithful work among children. May she Rest In Peace

RE: Ninth Floor @ TTFF

2016-SEP-29-2009Hrs
Hi Errol,
Here’s something for the Blog regarding Ninth Floor screenings at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival:
A big THANK YOU to those Mausicans who made it to the Ninth Floor screening at UWI last Friday (Angela McAlister, Barbara Wafe, Joy Valdez, Amba Reveillac, Pat Aqui, Donald Graham, Finbar Ryan, and the lady who came up and said “you don’t remember me?”) and from the Movie Towne screening, I definitely recognized Angela Ifill and Judith Bazzey, and Sadie Davis, after she introduced herself; and the family members who came along. Both screenings felt like mini-reunions. It was a true reflection of the Mausica family in fine form. That made the screenings very special indeed.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to meet and celebrate afterwards, due to a very busy schedule but I know we took some photos at the UWI screening, so maybe someone will post a photo. If I missed anyone, it wasn’t intentional.
This was my first time at TTFF and it was a very rewarding experience. Thanks to the family support, it was even more so.
Thanks also to Felix who took Pat Allum and me to visit to Mr Williams. He was still being as witty as ever but he never did figure out who I was.
Cheers, Selwyn

Hi Errol,
Special thanks and congratulations to Selwyn for his production of the stunningly evocative film Ninth Floor.
Many of the persons who attended expressed thanks for its vivid documentation of a part of our history which had remained silent for so many years. We were also grateful for the explanations it  provided for many unanswered questions concerning certain events at the Sir George Williams University.
I share a few photos of Mausicans who viewed the film at UWI last Friday and Selwyn with some cast members.
Blessings and love,
joy!!!

Response to Selwyn's post:
The issue revisited in the documentary, "The Ninth Floor," echoes conflicts some minorities still face today especially in western society/culture. This film presents different perceptions of what led up to the events that escalated at that time. Today, we may draw our own conclusions, but at least we should come away with a better understanding of how the past has helped to shape our present and future.

You know - it is such a small world! When in 1970 or thereabouts the Alumni Choir went to Jamaica and Antigua and the Christina on its way from Antigua to Nevis sank. I joked that I could have been on that boat because I was thinking of fulfilling my life long dream of visiting Nevis and going over there from Antigua. He responded that he too could have been on that boat. Then I remembered his aunt who lived with him and her surname was Small and she was from Nevis as my grandmother whose surname was also Small. It is to my eternal regret that on one of my visits to her with other students I did not take the opportunity to question her because back then I did suspect that there was a connection so I asked him who were the relatives he wanted to visit in Nevis? His reply was - the Smalls and the Byrons who are the same ones I wanted to visit. I did speak to Mt Williams about it recently and it turns out that we are indeed related. As Johnny Mathis did say/sing - Small world isn't it!!!!!

Went to see Mr Williams and took copies of my books for him. Spent sometime with him. He did remember Maria Mora. Of course, he remember a young man who was "President, wasn't he?" Of course it was Noel T. Duncan and he asked about Fou, said that they were like his sons. He took care of them as sons. There was a wall opposite him designed with those slate type stones. He asked me if I knew what was behind there. Then he said those were used in Mausica. There was another wall behind me and he pointed to them and said 'those are more modern." Really amazing man.

RE: Cassava and Wine!

2016-JUL-16-2043Hrs
My Fellow Mausicans,
Last Wednesday evening, July 13th, Marj and I shared some wine with our  celebrated Mausican, Havenite Brother, Efebo Wilkinson.
Efebo and Lucille were visiting their daughter, Karma,  and her family in Lawrenceville, GA. It was a most enjoyable evening. Efebo and I had red wine and the ladies sipped white.
Efebo informed me that Bitter Cassava received rave reviews and he appreciated the presence and support of the Mausicans who attended the play.
Next time Marj and I visit Sweet, Sweet TNT, we will be wearing our treasured gifts:  Bitter Cassava T-shirts.
Another Mausican making a contribution here in Atlanta is Alan Simpson, de man from Grande. He is deeply involved in the Memorial Day Carnival and the Trinidad and Tobago Association of Georgia.  At the Family day picnic, Alan had the children and adults participating in 50 yd race,  bag race, egg and spoon, needle and thread and windball cricket. Everybody had a good time.
I was holding the rope at the finish line.
Sincere condolences to the bereaved.
Let's continue "Living The Legacy".
As usual,

RE: Sister Ivy Pacheco

2016-JUN-29-0853Hrs
I attended the graduation ceremony of St. Xavier's Private RC school a week ago here at home. At the helm of this school is Sister Ivy Pacheco who is a Mausican 72-74.  Sr Ivy entered the Convent in 1976. She taught at Maracas RC, St. Pius Boys'RC and Moruga RC before leaving for St. Vincent in 1991. She spent 22 years there where she retired as the Principal of St. Mary's RC. On her return, she took up the challenge to head St. Xavier's.
The Chairperson for the graduation ceremony was Mrs Susan Weekes Perryman (graduate of '72). I also saw Mrs Beulah Redhead fulfilling the supportive granny role.
Some of us are still out there in the vineyard.

RE: Mausica

2016-MAY-28-1510Hrs
Dear Errol,
It was a joy to visit Mr. Williams this morning. He told me it was a shock and a joy to see me. He said it several times. Since our 50th anniversary I had promised to visit him to read the poem I had done up at Mausica when we had the concert. I had read it over the phone to him then, but had always promised to visit him at Jubilee Street. You can see from the video how he has al his wits about hi. He greeted me in French, "Bon Jour," but when I answered him in French,he said, "No compran." I told him he could not switch languages on me from French to Spanish. I told him I had told Gwen I would visit and he said he sees her all the time. He assured me that he was happy and being treated well. He likes it there. I promised to visit again soon as he wants a copy of the poem. I told him I lived close by and he wanted to know how I had not come before. I had come from mass at Mt. St.Benedict and brought him a buljol sandwich and Nestle drink from on the Mount,  but they said he could have it later. They told me visiting time was from 9:00 am. but they let me in although I arrived there before 8:am.
I am attaching a video my husband made of our visit, as well as the poem which I had to retype last night as I could not find a soft copy. You will see from the video that Mr. Williams said he knew about Freddy the frog and could not forget Chris Osborne and how delighted he seemed to be  about the other memories about Mausica.
I also promised him I would visit Mrs. Cuffie. I went to a funeral of a teacher at All Saints church last week and as I passed by the Home, I promised myself I must make time to visit her.
God Bless my Mausica family and keep each and every one of you safe.

"THE MAUSICA STORY

Eric Eustace Williams the father of our nation
For the advancement of education conceived a vision
To revolutionize teacher education that would be on par
With world standard, and so was born a college named Mausica
Fro existing colleges he took educators who were the very best
To train young teachers from north south east and west
He ensured every creed and race was represented there
When in 63 Mausica opened its doors to one hundred and ten pioneer
These brave men and women some of whom are in our m
Began to live the motto of “Moulding a nation through service.”
Their lasting legacy we celebrate even to this fiftieth year
We salute them and for those who have died we shed a tear.
……..

But what is this Mausica legacy that we cherish and love?
It ranges from our folk song choir to kissing Freddy the frog
Remember Silver Springs Orchestra that we waited for in vain
And when worms from Grell cup gardening caused emotional pain
Blindfolded, we thought we were given garden worms to eat
Then discovered was noodles touching our tongue and teeth
What of Morning Assembly with erudite impromptu speech
No wonder some of them in Parliament, they reach
Politicians as diverse as Morris Marshall and indomitable Jack
Ojah -Maharaj and Acheson alias Rodney Charles were inside the pack
Anna Maria Mora threw her hat in the ring for COP
And Eastlyn McKenzie decided to bow out
We showcased talents in drama, singing, poetry and dance
Arts and Craft and other skills were also enhanced
For singing calypso some girls wanted to cut mih tail
But Noel T and Parmesad gave protection from buxom female
Mayfair mansion was the worst hostel on campus for boys
Used to disturb your sleep with maco radio station noise
They always used to know who was going with who
But among them handsome men were very few
Everyone had a nickname, the meanings we did not always know
Maybe the Warden could tell why they called Scratchy so
I knew one they called Cowboy did not like to bathe at all
And the measured one known as Flagpole was not really so tall
……………………..
Agnes Howell and friends used to put on some wicked skits
Mausicans in drama and arts festival were a great hit
We had our way of doing things in Mausica country
Where else could you bow and unbow and do it with glee
Who could forget roti an dorange juice on a Wednesday night
And Mr.Julien who would give seconds if you ask him right
Remember Harry Joe dancing with white kerchief I hand
Moping he brow of sweat from dancing with young woman
We recall our home Economics teacher Beryl wood
If you put a ‘s’ on her name she would buff you good
“I am only one Wood,” she would cry
While Miss Hordatt would shake her head and sigh.
……………….

Constance Fanny Roopchand taught us Sociology
Douglass, Science, Romain, Literature, and Baptiste, History
Dukhan introduced us to Psychology and Harribance, the psychic
While Maunday, boss in Industrial Arts had Scratchie as devoted sidekick
Furlonge tried to tech me New Math in vain
Was like battling locusts in Mausica after the rain
When Chris Osborne came, on his very first day
“Mausica stinks, I will clean it up,” he did say
And when the thief took ladies underwear from off the line
Say they take shadow, will return for substance they leave behind
The Cuff could mess you up with a voice real cool
When she tell me better late than never I felt like a fool.
………………
We came to Mausica to learn to teach and got added bonus
How to live on forty dollars a month, to gamble and cuss
When is teaching practice we busy like a bee
Preparing the best chart and lessons for supervisor to see
Nervously we hoped to get off to good start
Shedding tears when experiments and plans fell apart
Some came to Mausica, fell in love, married life partner
And we learnt to live in harmony with one another
We learnt lessons that did not always come from book
Mad life-long friends, shared experiences that took
Many of us to reach higher heights, acquire divers degrees
To build our country of origin and some overseas
……………..

We matured with grace, made contributions to society
In teaching and in so many other spheres of activity
Some stayed in the classroom giving students their all
For others becoming principals and supervisors was their call
Yet others chose the path of university lecturer, businessman, psychologist,
Permanent secretary, lawyer, artist, musician, writer, feature on the list
Pierrot Grenade, steelband judge, calypso and mas too
You will find that we Mausicans are a motley crew
In this year, twenty-thirteen our anniversary date
There is o much that we can and must celebrate
We thank God for our beloved extended Mausica family
And if He will, may He grant us life to see another anniversary.

RE: Another Mausica mini reunion

2016-APR-14-1932Hrs
Six of our family visited Cuba and Jamaica via Cuba Cruise.  It was an awesome week (April 4 to 11/16).  We enjoyed one another as much as we enjoyed the warmth and sunshine in Cuba.  During our cruise we shared many Mausica memories - mostly hilarious ones.
We thought of all of you as we sipped our mojitos when we visited Santiago de Cuba.
In the picture - Phil Ramsankar (honarary Mausican), Marina Leung Woo Ramsankar (64 - 66), Yvonne Murray (65 -67),  Brenda Alexander (63 - 65), Brenda Wilson Walters (63 - 65),  Florence Harvey Sorias (64 - 66).

Re: Fwd: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS 2016-MAR-12

2016-MAR-12-1723Hrs
H Errol,
Those photos of former Mausicans so lovingly around  Mr. Williams helping him to celebrate his 99th birthday is a great human story!  It tugged at my emotions and made me joyful because it reflected the goodness of God.
It is an uplifting story of one man who made such a great impact on the lives of his students that more than 50 years later, the desire and motivation to let him know how much we care, love and appreciate him for all he tried to do to empower us and make us well-rounded people, are still very strong within our hearts. We have all been witnesses to his life as a  legend in our time - and God has blessed him with long life and an alert mind.
How wonderful to see so many of my dear colleagues from the Pioneer Mausicans looking sharp and fit.
I feel jealous that I was not there with you all for the occasion.*:( sad  There was Eulalie laughing her head off with Allan Clovis; Jack and Maureen Warner; Felix Edinborough, Carole Reveillac; and Farida Chapman.
Well done folks, everyone who made the time to go has done us all proud.
Love and Blessings
Vernetta Brewster Calvin-Smith 65
