big loss: Roland Gordon

Musical director of the Malick Folk Performers, Roland Gordon, died at the Mount Hope Medical Sciences Complex yesterday where he was a patient after suffering a stroke on Tuesday.
Gordon served as chief judge at the semifinals of the International Soca Monarch competition at the Arima Velodrome last Sunday where he and his team looked at the performances of more than 80 artistes from about 5.30 p.m. to after 3 am Monday .
Gordon’s son, soca artiste Roderick ’Chucky’ Gordon, who is in the finals of the Soca Monarch Groovy category, discovered his father was ill and rushed him to hospital. Up until Monday when he was working on tabulating scores from the Soca Monarch semis, Gordon showed no signs of being ill.
The musician, actor and teacher had been serving as chief judge of Soca Monarch for nine years and was involved in the Best Village competition on several levels. Gordon also played in parang bands and judged in the junior and senior calypso monarch competitions.
William Munro, chairman of Caribbean Prestige Foundation, producer of the Soca Monarch, was shocked by Gordon’s sudden illness and subsequent death. Munro said Gordon’s passing was a great loss for artistes in Trinidad and the other Caribbean islands where he also worked with artistes.

I was so sad to hear of the death of yet another Mausican, Roland Gordon. Not only did Roland and I attend Mausica together, we were secondary schoolmates, attending Woodbrook Government Secondary School. He was always so full of life and energy. Last November, we attended one of our school's reunion and there was Roland, full of fun as usual. He was also known in the wider community for his musical abilities, being associated with the Malick Folk Performers and working as a Music Facilitator with the Ministry of Education. He will certainly be missed by all who knew him. My condolences to his family.

I am truly saddened to hear of the passing of Andrew Huggins, more fondly known to us pioneers as Barli Marli (?never had to spell it before). Although we were not in close touch over the years, we did meet a few times when I was in T&T. In fact, on Carnival Tuesday, 2008 I met him and Cynthia and Joycelyn and Lynette downtown PoS. He and I shared a few beers as we are wont to do and talked of the good old times. I looked for them again last year but did not see them and was planning to go back to the spot again this year...
Sadie, kindly extend my sincere and deepest condolences to Cynthia; my thoughts are with her and family.

A group of us attended the funeral of Ivor Mohammed son of Claire Titus-Mohammed and Faizal Mohammed. I came away feeling so inspired by the fact that this young man had lived his life to the fullest - an example to all of us.
After the funeral hanging out at the reception with Claire and Faizal (until we were almost asked to leave), several of us got together and did what we do best - lime. The lime eventually broke up around 7pm - we had been out since 9am at the funeral.

Just read about the passing of Andrew Huggins, aka Barly Marly who was married to Cynthia Davis.
So much sad news these days (haiti included)! That's why it is so important that we cherish the moments we spend together and create opportunities to reminisce and laugh - because in the final analysis all we will have to enjoy are our memories. Let's continue to make good one.
I laugh so much when I am with Mausicans.

You are very welcome, Hazel. This past two weeks were bitter for all of us, but we are bonded together with memories and prayer. The memories and the prayers are the sweet, so let me change the previous statement. The past two weeks were bitter/sweet for all of us. This is what "Community as Family" means Felix. I know that this is what God wants. This face says that I am thinking, Felix. "One Love, One Heart, Thanks and Praise to the Lord and it will be all right."(Robert N. Marley)
Anyway, news regarding the CD. Alisford has replenished the stock, and I now have ten more. The previous twenty are now all gone. HOWEVER, this new stock now has an increased cost. The CD is now $40TT. Cost of the material has increased, hence the reason for this new price. That will mean 7USD. Please be advised.
Please continue to keep each other in the circle of prayer and the warmth of love and happy memories.

Hi Errol: Just to say "THANKS" to you and Moira for the effort you made to provide me with the Mausica CD. It is not yet in my hands but it will be very soon. I always look forward to getting your emails and to learn of the Mausica family and their lives. It so very sad to hear of the passing of Mr. Maundy and all the other people, some of whom I remember. If we look forward only to this life here, there is not much hope for us but with a future life in view we can withstand anything. God is a good God and if we look to Him no matter what the circumstance, He will see us through regardless of what confronts us. My heart aches for the Haiti victims. Life is so precious but it can be taken away very suddenly. God help us all.

I left florida to attend Mr Maunday funeral along with my dad Mr. Arthur Lochan from NY my mother and brother. He was my father I am will miss him dearly, he was always there to help with my homework and other projects when there was no computers only enclopedias. His son Garth and Charmaine I truly adore I was like a little sister to them I did visit mausica and I cried to see how bad that place looked, we lived in the first house, I could be believe that it was so much neglected. I was there through graduations and all the other functions those days were truly days that was spent in paradise. What i would not do to have those days back. I aould run away to Mr Maunday house I would stay eat, shower and sleep over there.
I love MAUSICA and i must say that I am very depressed at my father and mother passing, two great indivduals words ccannot describe Mr. & Mrs. Maunday.
Lets keep the love of Mausica alive.

It is only today that I too heard of the death of Andy Huggins who the pioneers knew as 'Barly Marly'. It was Maureen Warner who phoned me. My condolences are extended to the family. I was very sorry too to hear of the passing of Faizal's son. I did not know the son but I remember Faizal very well and would love to meet him again to share some memories. In the first issue of the 'Mausica Times' I wrote a story about him but I am not sure he knew that he was the one I was writing about. Faizal, very sorry to hear about your tragedy but I pray that you have the faith and strength to bear it all.

I went to Mr. Maundy's funeral on Saturday and am happy to say that it was very well attended. One of the moving moments was the 'Ave Maria' sung by Eulalie. She still has a fantastic voice that should be used more often. Mausica was well represented and the crowd was so big that I am sure I did not see all who were there.
There were several tributes and we know that he deserved many more. May his soul rest in peace.

What wonderful memories! Terry had brought up the Mausica CD from Trinidad late Friday night. First thing in the morning,he put it on the CD player. As the Mausica voices wafted through the air on Saturday morning at breakfast, I was transported back years into the cold lecture theatre at 3;00 a.m. and could hear the announcement: "Take 34!" Weary, yet committted to perfection, we sighed, but went at it again, hoping to get it right this time, to please our taskmasters and ourselves, to produce an album that was second to none. "Bring Back the Coverlet," "Tengo lorse all he money", "Don't faint away, Lulu" and the list goes on.....
Maria , thank you. Thank you to Alisford and all who had a hand in producing this priceless gift of ourselves to ourselves. God Bless us all this New Year of 2010 and always.
In the midst of this joy, there is sorrow over Mr. Maunday's death. Sorry I am not in Trinidad for the funeral.I hope we had (or will have, not sure of the funeral date) a good representation from the Alumni.
My condolences to Feizal on the death of your only son. May God give you the strength to bear this loss.

An invitation is also given to all to a go to Federation Park after the service. I know that the Mausica Family's collective prayer goes out to Mr. Maundy's family, who is our family. As Brenda, shared that their home was her home in Mausica, how many of us know his children, as Mausica's children along with Lyn-Marie Osbourne. Their home was always open to us. Esla, our prayers, and love are also with you. May he rest in peace.

Fellow Mausicans
What a blog it's been this week but we must cherish the good memories as we move on. Condolences to Feizool and family.
I am happy to have met Mr Maunday again at our Tobago Reunion. Again, because I had last met him in Barbados in 1990 along with Mr Isaiah Boodhoo... we were marking various CXC exams and I had not seen either of them in many years as I no longer lived in Trinidad. It was like returning to Mausica after a weekend home! the magic of Mausica eh?.
We must always make the best use of the time we have here.
Blessings to you all. Pat

RE: The passing to the ancestors of Roland Maundy and Ivor Mohammed.

2010-JAN-14-1035Hrs
TO: The Mausica Family
On Friday, January 15th, I was already scheduled to hold a vigil for Jacinta, the sister of a friend, who pssed to the ancestors in a war-torn country, and whose American-resident family were advised not to come, because funerals can be major opportunities to rob American returnees, by people who come as mourners. I was shocked on hearing this. We Trinis, I do not think, have descended to that level. Then, I was asked to include the Great -Grandmother of my little play grand-daughter, Joylyn, who passed last week, at age 100.Her Bhuddist family will observe a year of strict mourning. So, I am not too suprised to realize that I must add two more to the list of those I hold a vigil for.
Mr.Maundy was a friend and colleage. Ms. Fourniller remembered how he adopted her. Charmaine, his daughter, then about nine, adopted my sons Nigel and Larry Romain, as her baby brothers, and roamed the campus on week -ends with them in tow. I did not have to worry about them, if they were with her. I guess that abounding love runs in families. To me, Mr. Maundy was always a gentleman, and his wife was frienddly to this lone woman lecturer, whose husband no one had seen. (He did come home for a short stay when his mother died, but still, no one knew him, so the Maundy's were my campus family also.) An easy-going man. When I saw him at the Tobago reunion, I thought he looked frail, and he really did not remember who I was, but I went over to pay my respects, to an elder of the family. It was appropriate.
Now, to Feizal Mohammed,I have no idea what is must be like to lose an only son. I feel for you. You must be living temporarily ,in the kind of stupor my sisters and I lived in when, in August of 2004, we lost our two brothers and a niece, in 17 days, August 2, Edmund went, during surgery at Mt. Hope,Pauline Hollingsworth went on August 10, and Felix Edwards died of grief at his brother's passinfg, of a massive heart attack on August 17. (I was flying around so much that the TSA began selecting me for special screening.)We all thought we were going to lose it, particularly my sister whose daughter went on Aug.10. Today, we have healed, almost. We have new babies in the famiy to replace those that went home. My sister has embraced her grandchildren, realizing that she has to raise another generation. When that same sister lost her husband of 37 years last February, all she could say was "God is Good. We will survive this, too."
The deaths in 2004 brought us much closer, though one is in England, three in The USA and two in TnT. We talk almost every week.
My message to the Mausica Family is : Treasure those who are here, while we cope with the grief of the passing of some of us.It is only a matter of time before we all join that procession to the other side. Let every day matter. And to Feizal, I hope you consider this letter a hug of consolation and hope. You, and your family, will overcome this.
Meanwhile,I light a candle nightly for those caught up in the tragedy that is Haiti. Donations to UNICEF(www.unicef.org) can be made by credit card. UNICEF provided milk and biscuits for the elementary school children in TnT when I taught elementary school.

Hi Errol,
My condolences go out to Fizal who has lost his son tragically. It will take some time for you to become accostumed to your loss, Fizal. May God grant you the courage and strength you need at this time.
Condolences also to the Mausican family who has lost Mr. Roland Solomon Maundy. I remember Mr. Maundy very often in the shop and always with a pleasant smile. He has added his bit to the world and the Lord has now called him home after his many years of labour.
This morning I heard his orbituary and was shocked. The announcement said the funeral will be on Saturday 16th at 10.00 am at the Santa Rosa church, Arima, and then to be interred at a Western cemetery, (don't remember which).

RE: Mr. Maunday

I am in the BVI and am not keeping up to date via email.
While I felt that Mr. Mauday looked frail when I saw him at the NYC boat ride in June 2008 and I heard that he had fallen in Port-of-Spain a few months ago, I am distressed at his passing. Mr. & Mrs. Maunday adopted me from the first week that I entered Mausica. They gave me meals when I did not want to eat what was in the dining room - especially on weekends. I spent time at their home during the August vacation of 1964 and maintained a relationship with them for several years after I migrated. Mr. Maunday was the first person who realised that I had some creative skills and he encouraged me to try basket weaving, book binding and woodworking. He was an extremely patient and non-judgemental man and I always wished that I could speak with my father the way I was comfortable speaking with Mr. Maunday. I was blessed to have known him and the world has been a better place because of the gifts that he gave to many of us.
Sorry, I won't be able to make it to the funeral.
I am so sad.

It is with sadness that I inform everyone at Humber River Regional Hospital of the passing of Ivor Mohammed, a dedicated Orthopedic Technologist in our Fracture Clinic.
Ivor passed away tragically in an automobile accident downtown Toronto on the weekend. Although he joined Humber River late in 2009, Ivor made an instant impression on staff and patients with his wonderful sense of humour and gentle, caring demeanour. He was extremely committed to his work, was always pleasant and demonstrated excellent customer service skills. Ivor had many friends at Humber River and his smile and warmth will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
On your behalf I have extended condolences to his family and friends. As is our practice, we will acknowledge Ivor’s passing by lowering all Humber River Regional Hospital’s flags to half-mast on the day of his funeral.

RE: In Memoriam

2010-JAN-13-0514Hrs
We celebrate his full life while we mourn the loss to family, country, and the educational community!
Yes, how many of us choir and non choir members remember the mother figure (famed soprano soloist of Mausica, Bernice) holding her belly and belting out "Sammy Sammy dead, Sammy dead OH! And heard the deep resounding response: When ah me body lay down in the grave den ah me soul goin' shout for joy!
These words have new meanings for us now that many of the members of the community are like Sammy passing on! Roland Maundy is yet another of them. He is one of the many great icons in Education in Trinidad and Tobago whose vision and mission allowed "Maundy's Boys" and maybe Girls to go on to achieve intellectual greatness and to become the next generation of educational scholars with visions for a "better" "greater" Trinidad and Tobago and world.
The theme song so many of us heard on the Redifussion "If I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living will not be in vain" might have been his own too. Maundy did indeed without the paparatzi or television cameras or loud clanging of bells help so many along the way. He quietly in true Maundy style leaves behind a legacy of outstanding and excellent service with humility, pride and lots of unconditional commitment to family and country. My final memories of him sitting at mass in Arouca Catholic church a few pews away from me on Sundays and saying to me at the end of the service "how you going sweetheart" remain with me as I say Farewell soldier and thanks for a job well done and a legacy that we will do well to emulate as we continue on this journey of life and join with your family, Boys now Men, and country who know that your soul goin' shout for joy!

There are now no more CDs. I will be asking Alisford to so some more. Phillip Kendall ( remember him, people), Arthur Small, have ordered. Do not want to do too much and have them there. I am sure that we will be doing some to bring up to the NY reunion. If you do not want to wait that long, no problem. Just let me know.
You all heard that Beyonce will be in Trinidad on February 18th. The VVIP tkts went at $1,600TT and were sold out in two days. TSTT (BMobile) is bringing her here, she is on her South American tour. They are printing more $1,600TT tks. The tks start at $450.00 to $1,600TT. Any thoughts about this? I guess this is what DEMOCRACY is all about.

Thanks Maria. I got my CD and much nostalgia of choir practice..... concerts around the country, including one empty community centre which we had to fill with limers from the corner (literally!) - one of the best concerts.....The Tongo rendition really brooght back fond memories.
Happy new year to all and all best wishes for 2010.
