RE: CHANGE IS UPON US

2018-JUL-27-Fri
My Fellow Mausicans,
Starting today, you will be receiving MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS from a new address, namely, mausicablog@gmail.com, Yours truly will still be the person sending them.  You will most likely find an email similar to this one in your Junk/Spam/Trash folder.  The email address (errollashley@gmail.com) will no longer be used for the weekly emails.
 Why?
One year ago, my ISP discontinued hosting web pages.  Four years ago, the Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) came into being.  Five years ago, it was suggested that, I should hand over the job to another.  In an effort to make that transfer as smooth as possible when the time comes, I have changed the email address from personal to generic.  I also seized the opportunity to re-include the addresses which were dropped after 2014-JUN-27 mailing since this is a new leaf.  Given the outcome of the cases before the court after 2017-JUL-01, I’ve determined that I overreacted to the CASL and I apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused.  Given that any liability would have been entirely my own, I doubt I’ll react differently under similar future circumstances.
I managed to acquire a new domain, mtcalumni.comSometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. If it gets too bad, I’ll seek another alternative.  The old web pages are now available but a few links may not work.  The new site is “work in progress”.  Should you find anything wrong on the pages, please inform me and I shall fix it.
I have, in the past, made my Mausica files available in the “Cloud” to two other trusted and responsible Mausicans.  I take your privacy seriously.  I have also provided a copy of all the email addresses to a member of the Mausica Reunion organizing committee.  Updates are forthcoming.
To date, no one has stepped forward to take over so the job is still mine.
In case you are wondering, to the best of my knowledge, I am in reasonably good health mentally (I still remember how to dance.) and physically (I can still dance.).  Some may disagree with my self-assessment but the debate on that is now closed.  The heat might get me first.
I enjoy the job of keeping Mausicans connected and look forward to continuing for some time to come.  You will be informed if and when I am no longer capable.  Who knows what the future holds?
Change is good.

RE: Condolences

2018-JUN-29-0747Hrs
Oh dear ! Oh dear! I feel like Alice in Wonderland.
I am very thankful that Errol has kept this engine working. I am very thankful for Reunions. May there be blessings on us all as we go forward to other reunions. Thanks to the Mausican for sending the order of service of Carl Smith's farewell service.
I reunited with Carl at the 2011 Reunion. Selwyn and Jean Jacob, Carl,  Winston and I stayed at the Marriot Hotel. Fortunately for us, Carl came along with his Benz or BMW
(I don't remember), but it was immaculate white. We all drove in style to the main meeting places. Transport was difficult from that hotel. I could not remember Carl. He had now changed to the picture that was sent. He said he was my 2nd Year. Three days I pondered on who he could have been. Then remembrance dawned. I remembered him as being tall and slim and standing in the Lunch line, a reserved person. If it weren't for that Reunion I would not have known who Carl was.
Another picture of him that stays with me is of him at the Park Outing, at that reunion. He wore immaculate white shoes, a white hat, white shirt and I think cream trousers. He looked so very immaculate I thought of the Great Gadsby.
Now softly, he has gone over the sunset mountains.
'Bye Carl. Your labours are over. Rest in peace. May there be comfort for those who mourn.

RE: Another Mausican

2018-JUN-13-0618Hrs
Hi Fellow Mausicans,
The year is going by so quickly, we are half way through, bring with it more sad news. Some of you would remember Yolande ( I do not know her Maiden name) Pantin. She was married to a UWI lecturer (deceased) . On Saturday she left us after being ill for a while. Her farewell service takes place tomorrow, Thursday, 14th June,  at the St Joseph RC Church, Abercromby Street, St Joseph at 9.00am.
Errol, CAN THIS NOTICE GO OUT URGENTLY? I learnt of it only last night.
Yolande was one of my co-workers at St Joseph Government School. She was also a Reading facilitator with the Ministry of Education prior to her appointment at St Joseph. She adjudicated with me at a couple of biannual Arts Festivals of the Methodist Church. I used to enjoy listening to her choral speaking groups. Now that her labours are ended, may she rest in peace. May God comfort her family and those who mourn at this time.

RE: Reunion 2019

2018-MAY-25-0518Hrs
My Fellow Mausicans,
It's 4:42 am in Atlanta, GA and a voice just suggested to me; "Let's have the reunion in TNT"
Let's "Start With Why", the title of a book written by Simon Sinex.
Things we can do in TNT: Visit our alma maters. Take gifts, address the students, give thanks, share our stories, the history of MTC etc.
Visit the media.
Advocate for a  Performing Arts Center in the East, West and Tobago.
Visit and reunite with our own families.
Reunion 2017 was a beautiful experience., It was another opportunity to "Live the Legacy" and "Leave A Legacy."
I believe TNT would attract more participants.
Sincerely,
Rodney Foster, 66-68

Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS 2018-MAY-04

2018-MAY-04-1444Hrs
I loved Desmond very much. He was my brother.  How could he die on my birthday?
I saw the picture on this week's blog and tears came to my eyes.
For some strange reason, after all these years, Mausica's weekly mail is going into my social box. I do not  open that one regularly as it is usually junk mail.  I, therefore, did not see that last week's mail and am now seeing this week's mail.
I was really shocked when I met a colleague in the Trincity Mall and she told me Desmond 's funeral was that same morning. I was trying to get many things done as I was travelling  the next day. I am at present in Strasbourg, France, attending a symposium and an Executive Council meeting of the International Society of Family  Law at the European Court of Human Rights.   I did a presentation there this afternoon and am supposed to be at  a dinner but opted to stay in my hotel room with my daughter, who said she was feeling sleepy. I, myself, am not feeling of the best and my doctor had  advised that I should not travel alone.
I will miss Desmond's hugs and his cuatro playing. He was always so pleasant. I have never seen Desmond angry. Does anyone know how he died?  We are going off like flies.  I read death announcement every day. Is Linda's son OK now?
Love to all. I will try my best to make that meeting at Valsayn.

I want to express my condolences at the passing of Desmond a former colleague of Los Borrachos and fellow cuatro player. He helped me out with the cuatro and I always remember him when playing as I still use skills that I got from him. I am very sorry that I was unable to attend his funeral to pay my last respects as I was out of the island. May his soul rest in peace and may his friends and relatives be comforted.

RE: Tribute to Desmond Doolam

2018-MAY-03-2252Hrs
Another member of our Mausica Family  has transitioned.  Desmond was part of the '68-'70 cohort.    He was an integral part of our family. He was also married to Carol Anne Patrick who was his second year. They have two sons Carlon and Derol.  He was also a grandfather of four beautiful children.
One thing that I remember about Desmond is that when he left Mausica as a trained teacher he went straight to First Year Infants. We had never heard about an Infant male teacher before.  I think that he might have created history in Trinidad and Tobago, by being the first male infant teacher and First Year Infants at that.   This is one for Mausica's Reflections. After teaching Infants for some years, he moved to Aranguez Junior Secondary, where he taught Agri-Science.  His Aranguez colleagues were well represented.
Before Mausica he taught at Holy Cross College.  All his Holy Cross College  students, now big men came. All were dressed in dashing khaki shirts with the Holy Cross monogram on the pocket. They really paid tribute to him.
Desmond was member of  "Los Borrachos" Parang Group, which was formed by Mausicans for Mausicans. I hope that I recall correctly that it was our Felix Edinborough who christened our Parang side. Those of you who know Spanish, know that" Los Borrachos" means "The Drunkards."  Desmond played the quatro and he was really very good at it.  His children said that although "he hiked, swam, played football, tennis and planted garden in the bush," "parang" was his weakness.  After Los Borrachos,  he joined Los Tocadores.  This latter group provided some lively Parang at St. Charles R.C. Tunapuna. where we said "Goodbye" to Desmond.
He was very proud when he was chosen to go to umpire at Wimbledon. When this honour was bestowed on him, he told me this with a look of pride on his face.  We were all proud of him.
Eternal Rest grant onto him O Lord, and let Perpetual Light shine upon him. May he rest in Peace, Amen.

Hi My Peeps,
I have been MIA.  I missed you all. I am on a daily trek to San Fernando since June 2017.  It is a challenge after "doing your own thing" for so many years. Filling in for a colleague who is out of the country seeking medical attention.  Doing Student Counselling at Corinth UTT Campus.  Howard Spencer, Lester O'Souna, Anthea Permell, I saw Hospi, the day before, and I can go on and on. Mausica is everywhere. I will try not to stay away  for so long.
One of our brothers passed recently too, Ray Davis, who was in the 68-70 year group with many of us.  He became a Sports Journalist and was a very successful one.  When we met in the street we never passed each other, always a big smile on his face and mine.  RIP Ray.
It is not too late to wish all my Mausican Peeps, Peace, Love, Unending Joy and Hope for a brighter 2018 and beyond for our beloved country.   Keep Good.  I will try keep in touch and not get too out of it not to connect.
Happy Carnival To All.  It is coming very quickly. Cannot believe that J'ouvert Morining is only 12 days away. WOW!!!!!
Thank you Errol keeping us connected.

RE: Another sister lost

2018-JAN-03-2004Hrs
Dear Errol,
I was saddened to learn of the death today of yet another Mausican, Cheryl Selman (1970 or 1971?). Both she and her sister, Yolande, attended Mausica.
it was only a few days ago that I learnt that Cheryl was gravely Ill and I was told of plans for a prayer group to visit and pray with her. We were waiting to hear form her family when it would be convenient for us to see her, at  her sister' s home.  May she rest in peace.
Cheryl was a gentle, lovely girl and was very active in the church. I will always remember the very broad smile with which she would greet you.
May she rest in peace.
Please remember Mrs.Cuffie's birthday on Saturday, January 6.
Best wishes to all of my Mausican family for health, happiness, safety and prosperity in 2018.

RE: Another Tribute

2017-NOV-02-0737Hrs
Here is another tribute to one of our Mausican brothers.

From: Theresa Rampersad McLean

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Richard Spence, Mausica Graduate 68-70.  We will always remember Richard as a vibrant member of our Student Council.  He was an avid sportsman and a warm person. Richard gave his best to his teaching career as well as family. We celebrate the life of another great Mausican, who has left his footprints in the sands of time. He would have touched and shaped many lives.

From: Anna Maria Mora
I will always remember Richard as a gentle man and a gentleman. He had a that fooballer's frame: stocky, a slight bow-leg, and that confident stride. Ready to take on all the opposition.  He was a lover not a fighter though, off the field.   In the early days after graduating I would meet him of and on and his gentleness and warmth will radiate through his smile.   RIchard died in early October and his funeral  was held very quietly and without any fuss, as he wanted.  His brother is Monsignor Kenneth Spence and he told Theresa that Richard wanted no "celebration".  We, however, can celebrate him here.  Can we dedicate next week's blog to "Memories of Richard"? Scratchy, Lester, Korenza, all of us who knew Richard well, after spending two years with him day in day out.

To the Family:

On behalf of the Mausica Fraternity we would like to extend to the Family of RIchard Spence, our sincere condolences on his passisng. Take it one day at a time. Time will heal your sadness and replace it with joy and peace that surpasseth all understanding. May his Soul rest in Peace.

RE: TIME

2017-SEP-08-0230Hrs
MY Fellow Mausicans,
On Friday evening, I had a very interesting discussion/argument about TIME.
My friend was upset because I was late for a 2:00 p.m appointment. He had informed me that there was no need to rush because he would be home all evening. In addition , he was aware of the traffic problem  on the 91 East FWY and the 15 South in southern CA.
I arrived safely  about 5:00 pm. I was thankful, I explained that over  this Labor Day weekend over 500 people would not arrive alive at their intended destination. I informed him that in the old African tradition there was no concept of lateness. The gods/spirits were in control of our time. My friend reminded me that he was African-American. He also wears two watches.
How should we define time?  One morning, as i en=inched my way during the rush-hour traffic, I heard this definition "Time is a series of responses in an ever changing environment."
Mausica Reunion 2017 was a blessed and enjoyable time because we started out by by acknowledging the Creator of time. At Divine Ministries in Diego Martin, the Duncans and their team ran the first leg. It was a beautiful start. Prayer, good food, music and fellowship were the main ingredients.  That pattern was followed for subsequent events.
My brother, Andre Stephens, met me at the airport. The following night, we had our first and only rehearsal for the Mausica Calypso Tent. Alisford picked up Marjorie for the trip to Divine Minitries. Brother Efebo dropeed me off later that evening. As usual, Sister Angela Cato Ifill delivered starch and julie mangoes, Sister Lynette and Poole, Saleem brought a few avocados and more starch and julie. Brother Graham aslo gave two mangoes

Re: Condolences

2017-SEP-03-1211Hrs
I remember Donald as a big, smiling, Mausican Brother, the kind that came back to campus and helped found the Mausica Alumni Choir. He was a model Mausican.
'
Donald, Ken Marshall, Lennox Austin and Keith Martin taught me  how to "dress to impress" and lime by the Arcade on Frederick Street every Saturday morning. One Friday evening,  when I couldn't wait until Saturday morning, I and about seven other Mausicans were arrested for "obstructing the free flow of traffic" on the pavement.
Mr. Williams and his first cousin, Earl Jones, came to the rescue. That incident partially ended my liming days on Frederick Street.
My heartfelt condolences to the Walker and Pena families.
Sincerely,
Rodney Foster 66-68

RE: Re Donald Walker

2017-SEP-01-1816Hrs
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Donald Walker. I will always remember his warm greeting whenever and wherever we met - broad smile with a mischievous twinkle in his eye and arms outstretched in welcome.  I extend condolences to his family and many many friends. May he rest in eternal peace.
I extend condolences also to Judith and Glenda Lewis on the passing of Garvin - Judith's husband.
Last but not least, congratulations to the organizing committee of Reunion 2017. I think that it would be fair to say that a good time was had by all.
Your hard work was noted and very much appreciated.
Onwards to 2019!!
Kind Regards

RE: SEA Underachievers

2017-Aug-26-1141Hrs
I wish to commend Hazel for that compassionate article. It comes from the heart of a true teacher. Too many times the underachievers are neglected or their true needs are not properly addressed and they simply pass through the system. Well done  Hazel. Let us hope Anthony reads it and addresses it adequately.

RE: Fwd: Get together

2017-Aug-19-0613Hrs
Hello Errol,
I had to share Scratchie's letter with My Fellow Mausicans. I got his permission.
Scratchie's poetic piece captures the essence of the Mausica experience. Reunion 2017 gave us an opportunity to relive it.
Whenever I hear about the "Molding A Nation Through Service" activities that Mausicans are involved in,, I am energized and proud to be a Mausican.  Our theme," Living The Legacy" is alive.
Thank you Scratchie and all my Mausican Brothers and Sisters who are the change agents in our communities. Please keep us informed about your contributions to " making the world a better place".
Sincerely,
Rodney Foster 66-68

Subject: Get together
My Brother Rodney:
By now we should have worked out that our common sojourn on that sacred piece of earth we call Mausica, was for life. We are in our 70s now, some close to 80, and the fire of that place still burns and shines. I was very very happy to see you and to join with you and some of the good men to sing again and to play the ass, signatures of being a Mausican....our special bonding. The lime at your house was the greatest...several generations of men there, something that I always look at....men spanning the years and just falling in...catching the mood....the special spirit...finding capability in themselves they did not know they have....
The calypso tent was a master idea, and I thought the singing at your house was off the chart, and at the college many heard the music and songs probably for the first time...people caught the mood, never mind the rain....
It was good to see you, one of the mainstays of this thing.....you must write to Maria, encouraging her to return to the fold.....we missed her....
This thing has to keep going...it is as authentic as could be.....that place made me whatever I am....it is the source...
Again good to see you...and other havenites, such as Efebo, Finbar, and Carlton Layne....
Peace brother.
Mighty Scratchie"

I wish to extend heartiest congratulations to Hazel on her achievements. She is keeping the flag of Mausica flying high high high. We of the '67 -'69 group are particularly proud of her. When Hazel came in, and I think she arrived a bit late, I may be wrong, she was so quiet and unassuming that I make bold to say, that while as the time progressed we saw her blossoming out, no one thought she would reach this far. Hazel, congrats, and may Almighty God continue to bless you and your family as you reach higher heights.

RE: APPRECIATION - REUNION 2017

2017-Aug-17-1643Hrs
On behalf of the members who organized Reunion 2017, I express our sincere appreciation to all Mausicans, their spouses and other relatives who attended the recent reunion. Thanks for your support and participation which enabled us to renew acquaintances and once again reminisce on those glorious and unforgettable two years at the best Training College in T&T.
In 2013 Alumni were taken to Tobago, Valencia, San Fernando and Point Fortin. This year we went to Diego Martin, Massa Nature Park in Central Trinidad and toured the East Coast of the island. Once again we returned to base for the annual concert...this time featuring our calypsonians.
Many of us, some for the second time, also viewed the award winning 'Ninth Floor' produced by Selwyn Jacob. As usual, to bring the curtains down we dined and danced at the Hilton Hotel and Conference Centre. Thanks to everyone who assisted in making Reunion 2017 another memorable event.
Thank you also for your feedback which has been carefully considered. Volunteers are needed to organize Reunion 2019. Please contact members of the current committee so that proper handing over can take place. Your early response is appreciated as planning for a cruise must begin soon. Yes, as was announced at the dinner, most Alumni selected a cruise for 2019. Other choices were Cuba and Canada.
Thanks again and as Brenda said last week  "a l'horizon 2019"
Regards to all...be safe.

My Fellow Mausicans,
Aye, hear nah man, I like de back ah de bus.
Not de very last row; about de fourth row before de back..
De lime does be de sweetest in de back
Plenty ***t talk, ole talk, debates and lots of laughter.

Slow down driver! Look de fella comin.
Wen we was passing thru Chaguanas, ah Mausican from quite England pass ah white envelope through de back window tuh ah fella in ah blue jersey.
Yuh talk bout laugh and inquiries!
But de most raucous outburst was wen Graham unwrap de biggest bake and shark ah ever see.
"Boy,like yuh goin an feed de five thousand or wat?"
De bake was about two pounds. Everybody on de maxi coulda take ah bite.
There was serious bonding too between me and meh half Chinee, Havenite Brother, Allum, and his wife., Dirka.
Me and Joy Valdez traded books.
Meh Mausican sistah is ah serious poet, oui.

Dear Errol,
I very much regret not being able to participate fully in the MTC reunion this time around. Unfortunately, the event clashed with my preparation for the 16th World Conference of the International Society of Family Law in Amsterdam, which is held every 3 years in different parts of the world. Not only was I a member of the Executive Council, but I was also a presenter at the conference and I had to prepare my presentation before I checked in for my flight on the night of July 22. I did take time off to attend the 9th. Floor and was able to see many of our alumni who attended that wonderful production.
I am, incidentally, the only person from the Caribbean on the Council and am now a Vice-President, having been so elected at the General Meeting of the Society. Please see photo of outgoing Council attached. I have put in a bid to convene the next World Conference. I want it to be held in the Caribbean in 2020, so that our Caribbean judges, lawyers and other professionals involved in family law will be able to benefit from learning and sharing with the world -renowned international judges, law professors and professionals from related disciplines, such as therapists, who attend the ISFL conferences. Hope some of you will be able to support me in this venture.
Warm regards,
Hazel Thompson-Ahye 70

RE: Reunion 2017

2017-Aug-08-1028Hrs
We The North say - Congratulations????
We enjoyed another amazing reunion.
Thank you to the organizing committee. We know putting it together gave some of you a few more grey hairs, you too Howard!
The events were at a pace that we didn't have to arrive too early in the morning. Those of us who stayed at the Hilton enjoyed leisurely breakfasts while we reminisced about our Mausica experience.
As luck would have it, after crawling down the slippery path from the hotel to get transportation to City Gate, we got a PH car. The driver lived in Belmont and he became our private taxi; he was available whenever we needed him. In conversation we found out that Felix Edinborough was once his vice principal.
Except on the day at Mausica, the weather was so cooperative, unlike the sea at Manzanilla!
The trip out east and to Massa park gave several of us an opportunity to visit parts of the island that we had heard about.
Selwyn, congrats on the success of the NINTH FLOOR showing.
The Gala dinner and dance were the icing on the cake. The decor was mind blowing, the meal was delicious and the music - ah still want to raise mih hand and leggo!
From We The North - merci et à l'horizon 2019.

RE: Many Thanks

2017-Aug-02-2011Hrs
My Fellow Mausicans,
Carl Caton and I would like to express our sincerest thanks to our Mausicans Brothers who participated in the "Walk Down Memory Lane" in HMJ Hall at MTC.. We had one rehearsal in Dinsley on July 14th.
Big Brother, Earl Carnovan turned up early with his keyboard; Carl came with his guitar, stringed for a lefthander; Rawle Phillip and Lester Osuna journeyed  from quite Diego Martin, Alisford and Scratchy, wise men, came from the East; Leslie Ramdoo, Bossman,  represented St James; guitarist,  Efebo, from Tunapuna,  added his talents to the musical pelau, and Finbar Ryan and I were the supporting vocalists. The rehearsal was great.
On Tuesday, July 18th,  It was mas in HMJ Hall. We invited the spirits of our departed Mausicans to join de celebration.
Carl, who has a memory like an elephant,  opened the program with a Trevor Davis' kaiso," Sweet Memories Of Mausica". Soapseed was the first Calypso King or Road March King at MTC. Next came Bossman, singing his hit "Make It Tuh Fit meh Head". He still has a melodious voice but his pelvic gyrations form the the mid-sixties were absent. Ask Annette Allen tuh show yuh! The audience sang  along as we belted out Beckles'" WAR",  Joe Stephens' classic, "De Same Mausica", Efebo's " Ten Dollar Fine". Scratchy  reminded us of "DE Change"  ----Mausicans from Pt Zagaya who forgot eating tanya and dasheen wen dey come tuh MTC..  Of course, we had tuh end de show wit Leroy Cox' classic, "Mausica" . Yuh shudda hear Mausicans singin, " Now I have to leave this  place I'm feeling very sad/ Mausica,  I love you so bad..
Yes man, people start askin we tuh make ah record. Such memories.
To wrap up the show, we switched to singing some Mausica folksongs. The spirits were there. It was vintage Mausica Teachers Chorale Society in concert.. Felix, the red rooster, crowed and flapped his wings. Cherrie Luke Brizan and Lynette Thompson became soloists. Myrtle Spencer an I  enacted Fifi and Sweetman Doray. Rawle Philip and Lester Osuna, delayed by inclement weather conditions,  joined the choir.  Wen we sang "Boca Chimes", it was a fitting farewell to the spirits who had graced us with their presence.
Runion 2017 was a success.
Ah gorn.
Rodney Foster. 66-68..

O.K. I may not see it until the following week, though. I am leaving for Amsterdam tomorrow to attend the Meeting of the Executive Council of the International Society of Family Law and to deliver a paper at the 16th. World Conference of the Society. I return on the 30th.  I am the only one from the Caribbean on the Executive Council and the only one presenting at the world conference, so I don't think I should be absent. Someone has to represent us.
Enjoy the gala banquet. I am so sorry I had to miss out on so many of the  reunion activities this year.
Have fun. Shake a leg for me.
Love to all.
