I attended the graduation ceremony of St. Xavier's Private RC school a week ago here at home. At the helm of this school is Sister Ivy Pacheco who is a Mausican 72-74.  Sr Ivy entered the Convent in 1976. She taught at Maracas RC, St. Pius Boys'RC and Moruga RC before leaving for St. Vincent in 1991. She spent 22 years there where she retired as the Principal of St. Mary's RC. On her return, she took up the challenge to head St. Xavier's.

The Chairperson for the graduation ceremony was Mrs Susan Weekes Perryman (graduate of '72). I also saw Mrs Beulah Redhead fulfilling the supportive granny role.

Some of us are still out there in the vineyard.

Dear Errol,

It was a joy to visit Mr. Williams this morning. He told me it was a shock and a joy to see me. He said it several times. Since our 50th anniversary I had promised to visit him to read the poem I had done up at Mausica when we had the concert. I had read it over the phone to him then, but had always promised to visit him at Jubilee Street. You can see from the video how he has al his wits about hi. He greeted me in French, "Bon Jour," but when I answered him in French,he said, "No compran." I told him he could not switch languages on me from French to Spanish. I told him I had told Gwen I would visit and he said he sees her all the time. He assured me that he was happy and being treated well. He likes it there. I promised to visit again soon as he wants a copy of the poem. I told him I lived close by and he wanted to know how I had not come before. I had come from mass at Mt. St.Benedict and brought him a buljol sandwich and Nestle drink from on the Mount,  but they said he could have it later.They told me visiting time was from 9:00 am. but they let me in although I arrived there before 8:am.

I am attaching a video my husband made of our visit, as well as the poem which I had to retype last night as I could not find a soft copy. You will see from the video that Mr. Williams said he knew about Freddy the frog and could not forget Chris Osborne and how delighted he seemed to be  about the other memories about Mausica.

I also promised him I would visit Mrs. Cuffie. I went to a funeral of a teacher at All Saints church last week and as I passed by the Home, I promised myself I must make time to visit her.

Remember Silver Springs Orchestra that we waited for in vain

And when worms from Grell cup gardening caused emotional pain

Blindfolded, we thought we were given garden worms to eat

Then discovered was noodles touching our tongue and teeth

What of Morning Assembly with erudite impromptu speech

No wonder some of them in Parliament, they reach

Politicians as diverse as Morris Marshall and indomitable Jack

Ojah -Maharaj and Acheson alias Rodney Charles were inside the pack

 Anna Maria Mora threw her hat in the ring for COP

And Eastlyn McKenzie decided to bow out

We showcased talents in drama, singing, poetry and dance

Arts and Craft and other skills were also enhanced

For singing calypso some girls wanted to cut mih tail

But Noel T and Parmesad gave protection from buxom female

Mayfair mansion was the worst hostel on campus for boys

Used to disturb your sleep with maco radio station noise

They always used to know who was going with who

But among them handsome men were very few

Everyone had a nickname, the meanings we did not always know

Maybe the Warden could tell why they called Scratchy so

I knew one they called Cowboy did not like to bathe at all

And the measured one known as Flagpole was not really so tall

Agnes Howell and friends used to put on some wicked skits

Mausicans in drama and arts festival were a great hit

We had our way of doing things in Mausica country

Where else could you bow and unbow and do it with glee

Who could forget roti an dorange juice on a Wednesday night

And Mr.Julien who would give seconds if you ask him right

Remember Harry Joe dancing with white kerchief I hand

Moping he brow of sweat from dancing with young woman

We recall our home Economics teacher Beryl wood

If you put a ‘s’ on her name she would buff you good

“I am only one Wood,” she would cry

While Miss Hordatt would shake her head and sigh.

When Chris Osborne came, on his very first day

“Mausica stinks, I will clean it up,” he did say

And when the thief took ladies underwear from off the line

Say they take shadow, will return for substance they leave behind

The Cuff could mess you up with a voice real cool

When she tell me better late than never I felt like a fool.

We came to Mausica to learn to teach and got added bonus

How to live on forty dollars a month, to gamble and cuss

When is teaching practice we busy like a bee

Preparing the best chart and lessons for supervisor to see

Nervously we hoped to get off to good start

Shedding tears when experiments and plans fell apart

Some came to Mausica, fell in love, married life partner

And we learnt to live in harmony with one another

We learnt lessons that did not always come from book

Mad life-long friends, shared experiences that took

Many of us to reach higher heights, acquire divers degrees

To build our country of origin and some overseas

We matured with grace, made contributions to society

In teaching and in so many other spheres of activity

Some stayed in the classroom giving students their all

For others becoming principals and supervisors was their call

Yet others chose the path of university lecturer, businessman, psychologist,

Permanent secretary, lawyer, artist, musician, writer, feature on the list

Pierrot Grenade, steelband judge, calypso and mas too

You will find that we Mausicans are a motley crew

In this year, twenty-thirteen our anniversary date

There is o much that we can and must celebrate

Six of our family visited Cuba and Jamaica via Cuba Cruise.  It was an awesome week (April 4 to 11/16).  We enjoyed one another as much as we enjoyed the warmth and sunshine in Cuba.  During our cruise we shared many Mausica memories - mostly hilarious ones.

We thought of all of you as we sipped our mojitos when we visited Santiago de Cuba.

Those photos of former Mausicans so lovingly around  Mr. Williams helping him to celebrate his 99th birthday is a great human story!  It tugged at my emotions and made me joyful because it reflected the goodness of God.

It is an uplifting story of one man who made such a great impact on the lives of his students that more than 50 years later, the desire and motivation to let him know how much we care, love and appreciate him for all he tried to do to empower us and make us well-rounded people, are still very strong within our hearts. We have all been witnesses to his life as a  legend in our time - and God has blessed him with long life and an alert mind.

How wonderful to see so many of my dear colleagues from the Pioneer Mausicans looking sharp and fit.

I feel jealous that I was not there with you all for the occasion.*:( sad  There was Eulalie laughing her head off with Allan Clovis; Jack and Maureen Warner; Felix Edinborough, Carole Reveillac; and Farida Chapman.

Well done folks, everyone who made the time to go has done us all proud.

Dear Errol, from time to time I see Hazel Thompson-Ahye on television, explaining what we should do to improve the performance and behaviour of young people. Recently I was particularly pleased to listen to her respond to the searching questions of Fazeer Mohammed on Morning Edition. She was being interviewed about recent developments in schoolchildren indiscipline, one of the areas of her expertise. Fazeer, expert that he is , zeroed in on the way forward to solve this serious problem. Hazel, expert that she, confidently and clearly described the way forward and left Fazeer hungry for more enlightenment. I would like to commend her for steadfastly standing up for the rights of children. Unfortunately, I fear that she is just another one of our insightful, educated intellectuals crying in the wilderness. You go girl, FIGHT FOR WHAT IS RIGHT.

I intend to be in TNT in May, 2016. I would like to attend a meeting, share some ideas and socialize.  I suggest we seek some corporate sponsors for some of our events: breakfasts, T -shirts, drinks (hard and soft), scholarships etc. I have three Mausica vinyl albums that I would like to donate to a museum, or library for public display.

Calling all Mausica authors. Can we have some book parties so that we can exhibit our talents and make a dollar. .My friend, Efebo , once told me, "Dolphie, share de culture but make ah dollar."

By de way, are our Reunions profitable? Can we leave a financial legacy to perpetuate the memory of our beloved Mausica? Can we appeal to the present government and philanthropists to build a performing Arts Center in the East.  The MTC Performing Arts Center..

Remember, what we can conceive we can achieve.

Condolences to the Hills family. Judith was once the Commissioner of the Girl Guides Association of T&T. That's where I first met her. I shared a room with her daughter, Jewel, (I think that's her name), on one of our GG's Leaders' retreat.

I wish to add my bit as I offer condolences to the family of Judith Lennard-Hills. We were in the same year group but in different hostels. I used to meet her on the Chaguanas taxi stand hustling to get taxi to go to UWI in the days when the northbound lane of the Uriah Butler Highway was still under construction. I knew when she was a facilitator at Carapichaima Junior while I worked at the Senior. She kept me informed about reunions and other Mausica related activities. May God give her family the strength to go on and may the God of all comfort, comfort them.

Dear Errol,

I am so sorry to hear about Judith's death. Although we were not in the same year group, I remember her very well from other Mausican activities and from being in the teaching fraternity.

This month is a sad and reflective time for teachers. I made it a point to attend the National Consultations on Education both at UWI and at SAPA. I saw quite  a few retired Mausican teachers there. We were there because, although we are out of the education system, we care passionately about what is happening with our children in schools. There is so much that is happening that is wrong and need to be fixed. Many contributors blamed parents as though the family were the only socialization agency. Our society needs to accept that our children are living in a socially toxic environment and all the agencies of socialization, the family , education system, the community, and the mass media have a role to play. Labelling children and isolating them will yield the benefits we seek.

On another note, the Children's Authority, of which both nna Maria  Mora and I  are members is seeking foster carers. If you have a strong desitre to nurture and care for children ,have appropriate housing and have experience or skills in dealing with children and wish to foster a child on short -term or longer term please contact the Authority and express your interest. T.G.I.F. WHY?  because The Mausica blog appears then and it's delightful to me even if there's correspondence from one person!  I do hope more of us will get back on board.

Funny how just a name can send goose bumps. Love eh!  I treasure my two years ('70-'72) so the name MAUSICA is nostalgic.

Most of the folks referred to or who write in are not familiar to me because of their year group and...because I do not attend most reunions. Me aculpa. (Oh! Well...I did go to Tobago in 2014.)

Recently I caught up with Maureen Providence (Sotillio), and in chatting about Mausica, she was in admiration of Euline Fox who apparently attends most if not all the Reunions!  Yes? Take a bow, Euline.  We were in the same year group, and they were in Villa Nova while I was in Wingate.  I know we were each proud of our respective hostels.

Say 'GRELL CUP'!  I never saw gardens grow overnight like that and rooms transformed from 'plain Jane' to 'Cinderella princess!  WOW!

I learnt to appreciate 'porridge' when in the late night of studying and tummy growling, Pamela Lewis would put on a pot of sago or cereal of some sort and like Oliver Twist, we asked for more..

I really hope the next Reunion is in Trinidad! God willing, I shall attend. It's special thanks to the organizers and of course to those who try to maintain the spirit even as we continue to 'mould a nation through service'.

I wrote this three days ago,debating whether or not to send it. Then... last night I heard of the passing of Judith Lennard Hills('70-72) and decided to add this bit and press SEND! .  May she rest in peace.   Condolences to Kirkandaleans especially.

Mausica was altogether an almost idyllic period in our professional and personal lives. And Pal Joey and the other iconic music bands were such contributors...

How can I forget our Harry Jo/Student Union organized fetes and our dancing in the Hall to the strains of:

When I will get tired of you....

Never my love... never my love...!!

The several couples gave this assurance to each other, while the rest of us (singles) wend  our way back  happily to Hostel.

Pal Joey  and his music are indeed "memories" of a gentler time...!!

Our passing comes sooner or later. In the meanwhile, let's give thanks... let's enjoy.. let's pass on the memories to the younger ones.

My Fellow Mausicans,

The sad news of Joey Lewis' passing released an avalanche of  "Remember Wens?". Joey was an Honorary Mausican.

My dear friend, Carl Caton, and I  talked for about 90 minutes on Carnival Monday reminiscing about de good ole Mausica days. The majority of us would agree that we were indeed blessed. At MTC, we had nothing but the best.

Bandleaders like Joey Lewis, Ray Sylvester, Mano Marcellin  and  Ancil Wyatt contributed significantly to our well-rounded education.

Now that Pal Joey has "Walked Away From Love", I'll remember the beautiful music that he and his orchestra provided us. I remember Reunion 2003 at the Center Of Excellence. What a Time! It was fete fuh so. Meh pardnah, Andre Stephens, exclaimed that if he had died dat nite, he woulda die ah happy man. Joey and my DJ, Alisford,  had de place dancing nonstop. Just like we used tuh do in HMJ Hall.

Thank you Joey. On behalf of all Mausicans, I convey our sincerest condolences to your family.

My Fellow Mausicans,

1 Corinthians 12:26 " If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it."

On Sunday morning, when I read that verse, I rejoiced.

On Friday, when my Havenite Brother,  Kent Geezmo Rennie, informed me of Professor Theodore Lewis' most recent appointments,  I  was overjoyed.

I remembered when Theodore was baptized during initiation, 1967. It was Selwyn Bethelmy, his room-mate, alias Sto,  who named him Scratchie. Everbody loved Scratchie.

Congrats Brother Scratchie and all the other members of the two committees. May you all fulfill the Mausica Motto: Molding a Nation Through Service.

Marcus belated Happy Birthday.  This year, 2016, many more students from the 66-68 group will celebrate their 70th birthday.

We should organize a 70th Birthday Brunch.

Ah comin down in May to attend ah wedding.

Perhaps de Grells, Clive and Mary,  could plan ah lime. Geezmo, you, Cutty, Gregory Byrne, the Mausicans from South and de Braithwaites could throw ah fete in Point or Sando.

We certainly know what we are about, no matter what.  We have the fortitude, and patience both hallmarks of true service.

Hi Pearl, great hearing from you. I do remember "This too shall pass." Would you believe I use it with young people who are going through trials and need to focus on the big picture. The whole visualization technique. Every time I use it of course, Mausica is never far away.

We continue to be thankful for all the valuable lessons learned.

In response to numerous requests and after some discussion it was decided that we would organize a Carnival lime,

however there was some delay in confirming a venue.

Yes, there will be a  Brunch on Carnival Sunday - February 7th 2016.

Venue - Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima

Time - 11.00am to 6.00pm

Cost - Ladies bring eats, men bring drinks

DJ music will be supplied.

I would like to congratulate Selwyn publicly and to let the rest of the Mausica family know the excellent work that he has been doing at the National Film Board.  Selwyn is the producer of The "Ninth Floor" which was partly filmed in Trinidad.  It is a documentary of the events which took place in 1969 at the Sir George Williams University in Montreal.  These events involved numerous Caribbean students.  The documentary is receiving rave reviews and is making the rounds of various cities in Canada.  It was shown in Toronto last Wednesday to a large audience.  These are shots of Selwyn who subsequently had interviews on several TV stations.

Re: Roy Chadband (Chaddy)

As Felix Edinborough suggested last week Chaddy was a pretty big fellow. My memory of him is that he might have been closer to seven feet than he was to six. The pioneers speculated that he would be the perfect centre for our basketball team.

One morning I was standing in line in the Cafeteria, right behind Chaddy - all the while being monitored by the Home Ec lecturer, who was there to make sure we were following proper Dining Room etiquette! "No more than two slices of bread on your tray at once" was the mantra. "You can always return for seconds".

As I said, Chaddy was a very big man. When he got to the bread section, he simply opened his hand, spread out his fingers and caressed about eight slices into the palm of his hand, and then on to the tray.You could see it in his body language, he was proud of his accomplishment. I was envious, and was just about to say, "wow"! Then I heard the voice: YOUNG MAN! Put. It. Back.Take two slices at a time. You can always come back for more.

To this day, I can't remember what Chaddy said or did. I imagined he did the right thing and probably returned to the line at least three more times.Neither could I recall the reaction of other students in the line or at their tables.

Later in the school year, the said lecturer was leaving and a few members of the Student Council were invited to the Staff Room to say good bye. I was asked to say a few words. Immediately, the Chaddy "incident" came to mind and I tried to say something positive about it, but the word that came out was not incident, but insult. I am not sure how I got out of that awkward situation.

It's amazing the events that stay with you, and the people involved in them. Every time I think about lessons learned in Mausica, I think about the Chaddy episode.

Roy Chadband and I were students together at UWI. What a wonderfully 'cool' guy he was... always approachable, easy to chat with.... always had a 'a no problem' response to dealing with difficult situations. I did not see him often over the years, but when I recall my student days at UWI, it is with much nostalgia that Chadband (that is how we called him) comes to mind.

I am sorry to hear about Roy Chadband. When he came to Mausica he looked so naturally strong you did not think he could even get sick. I remember that when he was a first year preparing for sports he was asked to throw the discus. He had never handled one before and the other sportsmen had thrown it at various distances showing their art in spinning and throwing. Chadband took it up  and held it like a stone in his large hand and flung it further than everybody.

Unfortunately I too have some unfortunate news to share: This morning, Saturday, I attended the funeral of a Mausican, Patrick Guiseppi (1974-76).

My Fellow mausicans,

I wish to extend  my condolences to Hensley Williams' family.

I recall Hensley as the consummate  Mausican role model. In my first year at MTC, I would visit him and his roommate, Selwyn Gibbs, in the flat of Sunset Villa. What a lesson in creativity when I discovered six cool Carib beers in the tank in the restroom! When I failed flushing, I lifted the cover of the tank. Imagine my surprise when  a few beers greeted me. I extracted three beers and invited Hensley and Gibbs to "Have ah Carib, nah!"

Hensley and Gibbs had the first dorm refrigerator!!

The last time I saw Hensley in Trinidad was in Arima at a drugstore. I invited him to "Have a Carib, nah" at Harry's , a  famous Mausica watering hole, opposite the Velodrome.

Alma, my Osmond High School sister, may you and the family be comforted at this time by the loving memories of a Mausican gentleman.

Hensley may you rest in peace and rise in glory.
