MAUSICA REUNION 2013 - Establishing our space

Hi all! just want to say what a wonderful occasion the pre-reunion brunch at Jaffa turned out to be. Hats off to the organizers. It was great just being there, renewing acquaintances, meeting old friends and recalling the Mausica experience.
I just want to throw out a thought or two about the jubilee celebrations for next year. I acknowledge how vitally important it is to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the institution that is Mausica. An institution that unleashed unto the society a cadre of bright, creative, innovative and 'anxious to show their wares' young teachers whose efforts positively impacted the educational landscape of Trinidad and Tobago in ways that have yet to be articulated and quantified. As I am wont to say, the intervention that was Mausica Teachers College dynamized and catalyzed the teaching/learning environment in every nook and cranny in Trinidad and Tobago. That in and of itself is a 'causa celebre'.

I aver, however, that the celebrations has to be more than just about 'we' celebrating 'us'. It must herald a push to the creation of some tangible; some concrete, touchable, watchable, readable construct that would in essence define the mausica experience for this society for perpetuity. The form currently evades me, but it must indelibly stamp our presence along the educational corridors of this twin island state. When we consider the treasury of knowledge, skills, competencies, creativity and talent that resides within the mausican family, it is not outside of our ability to come up with a suitable form and maybe this forum may be the best medium to solicit views from our community on the way forward.

Mention was made on Sunday about our 'legacy' and I ask what legacy? For who knows about us, but us? Who cares about us, but us? Who defines us, but us? Time is irrevocably marching on and taking with it soldiers of mausica. Who will speak for, and about us when there are no more souls to soldier on in our cause? I reference our independence jubilee to shore up the point. If Eric Williams the 'father of the nation' could have been offered such low-keyed attestations in the celebration of our jubilee, what can we expect if we don't establish that tangible of which I speak. To adapt a quote from the movie the Gladiator... there was a dream that was Mausica...

As I said above, it just a thought...just a thought.

PS. I am willing to be a part of any group tasked with exploring the possibilities inherent in the above.
