For nearly three decades, award-winning filmmaker Selwyn Jacob has been telling stories about the lives and experiences of Black Canadians, Indigenous peoples and other often underrepresented communities. Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Jacob came to Canada in 1968. He holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta and an MA in Film from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.

Mr. Jacob’s independent films include We Remember Amber Valley, about Alberta’s first Black community; Carol’s Mirror, which won 8 international awards; and Gemini-award-winning The Road Taken, about the Black sleeping car porters of the Canadian railroad. Since 1997, he has worked in Vancouver with the National Film Board of Canada’s Pacific & Yukon Studio. In that time, he has produced almost 50 films including Charles Officer’s Leo- and Emmy-award-winning Mighty Jerome. Mr. Jacob has been recognized with an Emmy, three Gemini awards and a dozen Leo awards as well as more personal accolades such as the John Ware award for Black Achievement and an Honorary Alumni Award from the University of Alberta for community contribution."

Last Saturday, August 24th, The Trinidad & Tobago Association of Georgia, Inc, demonstrated the power of our country’s motto. We hosted a wonderful and enjoyable Scholarship Awards and Dinner Dance at the Pametto Event Center in Decatur, GA.  Under the leadership of Hazel Mitchell, President, and supportive members, we had a ball.
Rakuumba Nedd , a teacher and renowned artist, coined the theme for the program, “Let the Past Set the Stage for a Brighter Tomorrow.” Keynote Speaker, Stephanie Power, delivered a powerful and inspiring address. Sekel Mc Intosh, TNT Junior Soca Monarch, guest of Alan Nottingham, was fantastic. Vanessa Weekes, of Step by Step Caterers, provided a scrumptious dinner.
Of course, there were Mausicans. Alan Simpson from Grandee and a former president, celebrated his birthday. There was a scholarship in memory of our brother, Melsher Snaggs.  Marissa Williams and Rodney Foster were the MCs for the gala affair.

I was looking online (You-Tube) for Mausica folk songs recently, and I found only a rendering of "Christina". I was wondering (as Andre Stephens of Mayfair would say) whether that cannot be a project someone with the wherewithal can take on. Get all of the music on those LPs onto Youtube.

La Petite Musical has beaten us to that. They have some music on the net. I recently was looking for their "mangoes", but also played their very lovely "Every time ah pass".

As a fellow member of year group 65-67, I fully endorse all sentiments expressed by Kathleen Luke-Brizan (known to me as Cherry Percival-Luke)in her email of July 30th,2019. I must confess though, that I did not remember July 29th as our graduation day. I guess Cherry remembered as the Sunday following graduation, was a momentous day in her life. Cherry, you took me down memory lane. Your memory is fantastic. Mausica was truly an experience like no other - a coming-of-age for many of us.

I join with all my fellow Mausica graduates of 65-67 year group to celebrate fifty-two years of becoming graduate teachers on July 29th

The significance of this day is never forgotten although we are now retirees. My experience at Mausica will always be cherished .Teaching Practice , Initiation when the girls were targeted by second year males to serve them breakfast and lunch.  The assembly performances, Harry Joseph ringing the bell for the ladies to hurry to the parties so he could dance. The girls running to hide in the washroom to escape  dancing with him, The long nights of recording for our first album,  The choir's long journeys to remote country areas to perform and the singimg in the bus everytime.  The Inter hostel sports with  CarverScobie starring in a clip showing his marching skills which was repeatedly played to the  laughter of those looking on, the Carnival competitions ,the calypsoes like Tootoowa amd Modern maths.  the choir's command performance for Dr Eric Williams and Kenneth Kaunda ,Prime Minister of Zambia ,  Our winning the Champion Folk song Choir Trophy at Music Festival,the lecturers, Mr Hamlyn Dukhan and Joseph Mangatal , The Warden,  Mrs Cuffie and Connie Roopchand.  Remember Matron and the locusts?  How about Mr John Estok the Canadian lecturer dancing in a line across  the room with his wife? Our exposure to the arts , Miriam Makeba , the African Ballet  and others whose names I cant recall.  And most importantly, the long lasting relatioships developed with our fellow students as colleagues, friends, husbands and wives, And I could go on and on. Yes Mausica truly impacted our lives richly and unforgettably with experiences

we were able to pass on in some way to our children and students. I'm proud  to have been a part of that era.

My Fellow Mausicans,

On Friday, July 13th, 1973, after fulfilling my five year contract with the Government, I departed Sweet TNT for Brooklyn , New York. My goal was to become a Guidance Counselor and return to TNT to serve my country. Today, I will celebrate my 46th anniversary in the USA.

Who really designs our journey?

The Mausica experience has been a very significant part of my journey. I thank all those who have contributed to it. Big shout out to Villa Nova. If yuh call ah name , ah might whistle!

How well do I remember arriving at  MTC  on a Thursday morning during assembly. I roomed with Leroy Cox, from de Coconut in El Socorro, during my first year. I had an excellent mentor. In my second year , Carlsbury Gonzalez from Chaguanas was my roommate.

Carl and I are like blood brothers. His mother, 104 years old, is my friend and adopted mother. We chat and laugh on Whats App.

Recently Carl and I recalled our interviews for selection to MTC. Brightboy Carl had an impressive bio.

One of his hobbies was collecting stamps. Mr. Joseph asked, “What do you call a person who collects stamps?

Bightboy shout out. “A stamp collector.”

Sneaky Harry Joe replied , “He is called a Philatelist.”

Carl and I laughed our heads off. Carl won the award for “Best All Round Male Student” 66-68.

In my interview, the trick question was “How do you define failure?”

The Lord whispered to me, “A temporary disappointment.”

Ah hit dem fuh six. Interview done.

I received my acceptance letter on a Wednesday. I arrived at MTC the following day. The rest is Mystory.

"This is to let you know that our pioneer brother, Terrence Walker, lost his dear daughter, Terri, recently. She was just forty five, the mother of three and lived in Jacksonville, Florida. May she forever Rest In Peace.

Hope you all had a blessed Easter weekend.

As we draw closer to our deadlines, I want to remind you of the following..........

1]  Check your information flyer;

2]  Our first deadline is here for those travelling from Trinidad;

3]  If you have nor registered as yet - you need to do so as quickly as possible, as we make our down payment to CAL by the end of the week;

4]  Our OVERSEAS participants - although you are making your own air travel arrangements [if not travelling out of T & T] to get to Cuba, you still need to register with us for the Accomodation/ Tour/ Meals etc.

Even if you book a hotel on your own, you would NOT be able to join us on the tours, as this is being organized by an Agency and they need names and payments in advance here in T & T;  Please read the information flyer with the deadline dates.

It is not too late, but you must speak up NOW.

Rodney, do you know Grace the storyteller? Well Grace and Trevor(her husband) returned to her homeland in their later years and decided to build their retirement home in Bacolet. Our home ,the Kariwak Village was their second Tobago home and Grace used our signature Ajoupa teak platform to tell her stories on a Sunday evening. With her global network of storytellers, others would drop by from time to time...imagine the treat...others like Felix Edinborough ,Farida Chapman and the Dalai Lama have shared,blessed and energized our space. Two and a half uninterupted hours in the presence of the Dalai Lama in 1995 was awesome. Grace and Trevor after many years chose to return to Ireland. Tobago started to throw them some awkward challenges which wore them down as they aged.Fortunately,they succeeded in selling their house and getting their money out to resettle...thank God !  Grace has retuned to visit on two occasions...thinking that each time would be last visit...she's very frail but her spirit is strong...I somehow feel we will meet again...a real icon.

Do you remember those radio programs when we gathered around the radio to listen to programs like "I'll Tell You A Story" and "The Shadow".  That was long before television.
Last night I had several "Remember Wen? experiences. On Saturday, I retrieved a book that was headed for the dumpster.The title attracted me: "The Ins & Outs Of Trinidad and Tobago 2008" . I took it to bed and confirmed why I wrote " Oh Trinbago, why do I love you so."  I am ah Trini tuh de bone.
The colorful magazine is chockful of well written articles.The one that attracted me most was "Meet a Storyteller", Telling Tales- The Story of Grace Hallworth. She is fantastic.
All Mausicans have stories to tell. According to Mangatal , a  beloved lecturer, "If only these walls could speak, what great tales they would tell."
Aye, Geezmo, ah know yuh went three times awready. Come again and take us tuh tuh de place wit de best mojitos an Cuban food. Fellow Red Guards and Havenites, let;s reunite in Havana. Bring yuh musical instruments an voices . Come leh we lime Mausica style.

Our reunion in Cuba is becoming a reality. There is a proposed itinerary, which is being tweaked at the moment, and proposed dates.
The tentative dates are July 16th to July 23rd. The total cost is approximately USD 2,200.00 (air fare  from T&T and accommodation, meals and tours).
Cost of accommodation, meals and tours is approx. USD1,300.00.
At our last meeting, Efebo and Felix both made valuable contributions.
On Sunday 31st March, 3.00pm, Aquatic Centre, Balmain, Couva, there will be an "Information Sharing"  get together, where all will be revealed.
So the customary, ladies a dish, men drinks, lets meet, greet and be informed.
'Cuba here we come'

I concur with my sister colleague, Joan Parris Brathwaite (64-66), "Gone but not forgotten". I too, add my condolences to the family of Alphonus Antoine. The thought, the effort and real team spirit evident in the organisation of such a memorable reunion in 2009 speak to the character and integrity of individuals involved! Healing thoughts go out to you, Elmer O' Neal Roberts. Wonderful to hear that you are on the mend!
I now look forward to more information and updates regarding Reunion Cuba 2019.

Condolences to the family of Alphonsus "Croti" Antoine (Mausica 63-65). We cannot forget the hard work that Croti and the Grenada team (Elmer, Megan (dec), Yvonne and others) put in to make reunion 2009 in Grenada so memorable. We had a great time at the Reunion. He and his wife even accompanied us (those who took the first flight out after the reunion) to the airport on our departure from Grenada.

This is on a happier note.
Thank you for supplying this invisible ,strong chord that binds Mausicans together no matter where on  this earth we wander. Blessings to you today and always..
I was privileged to visit Elmer O Neal  Roberts our sister  of 64/66 from Grenada in Grenada this month. I leave on Sunday please God for Trinidad.
She has almost fully recovered from her terrible burns .
I met an energetic,independent ,determined , and cheerful woman who still has a challenge with her knees but is taking it in her stride! Thank God
In January 2019 I returned to Montserrat to get documentary evidence of my roots .....
My maternal grand parents were from  that beautiful land. There I met our sister  Pat Allum Ryan 63/65 vibrant and happy coping remarkably with her unnoticeable  health challenge.
I also discovered that  her husband Norman Ryan and I are related through my maternal  grand mother Sarah ( Herbert )Beach!
In one day I was able to obtain my grand parents birth certificates and marriage certificates.
Grand father  was born in 1888, grand mother 1889 and married in 1911
Try to imagine trying to get these documents in Trinidad and Tobago.  I say no more.

Greetings brothers and sisters .
I thought this was going to be a happy message, but alas it is tinged with sadness.
We never know how our last days will be. If we have good health thank God and try our best to maintain it. If, not try to fix it carefully and sensibly.
I came to visit Elmer Roberts, a  Mausican sister from 64/66, who has recovered from having 3rd degree burns to her left arm and leg and had to have skin grafts because she had a stroke and fell in a fire in her back yard a couple years ago. Today she walks independently,  cooks and does her house work generally without assistance.
Then  while here I learnt that  Alphonsus  Antoine aka Crotie  63/65 had Alzheimer's and went missing since Monday 18th February.
Today, 21st his body was found not far from his home. May he rest in peace.
This is all I have learnt from Elmer O'Neal Roberts in St Georges, Grenada..

My Mausica brothers and sisters, clearly this is a season of "passages" or "transitions" euphemisms for death......us Mausicans coming to terms with the reality that despite the robustness of our spirits, we too, like our ancestors must ultimately commit to dust.....

But something did happen at that place that is infinitely larger than can easily be explained...something quite magical....there could only be 220 of us there at a time, on the original model.....except for the pioneering first year.....and what came out of there in terms of human spirit, from days when lecturers stood at lecturns...and try to explain and to reason....

We are finding out, as the greats pass on, that Mausica itself will not die....

They did teach us in choir that with death the soul will jump for joy....they taught us the importance of myth.....

as they lowered the Cuff, spirits moved....owl was hooting, dog was howling, star was pithching, uhm hmm......

I looked around and saw giants.....that the place had created.....out of Jepson's little Library....

I have been wondering though about the mythical character the Ray-Ray man Fideray, and the importance of myth in constructing legacy...some of us went to UWI, and other places.....but it is Mausica to which we look.....it is that place that remains the guiding star...

Greetings and a Special Hello to the Mausican Family.

Please find below a report on the status of Reunion 2019.

At our get - together on Sunday 20th, the following decisions/recommendations were made:

(1) It is impractical at this time to continue negotiations for our planned cruise.

(2) For this year the cruise can be replaced with one of the following options:

     (a) Visit to St. Vincent - End of June/beginning July. This is to coincide with Vincy Mas.

     (b) Visit to Grenada - August 8th to August 15th. This time will coincide with Grenada  Carnival and return to Trinidad in time for CARIFESTA which starts on August 16th.

     (c) Visit to Cuba - Mid July.

You are kindly asked to indicate your preferred option by February 15, so that a final decision can be made at our "Carnival Brunch" on Sunday February 17th.  Everyone is invited to attend.
