RE: Memories of Fausto Papetti

2013-Mar-29-2203Hrs
Hi Rodney
In your email to Errol on  6th March you mentioned the name "Fausto Papetti" and boy yuh send meh down memory lane. He played a mean sax. I have a LP by him (1960's ) .....'the wistful sax of  Fausto Papetti'. The album is called "Midnight Blue". Great music on that LP: tunes like 'Just the same old line', the theme from 'La Dolce Vita', the theme from a 'Summer Place', the theme from 'the Apartment' and 'Where the boys are' to name a few.
Yuh send me back in times, a caption from the LP reads......."here is the ideal album for late, late listening! Turn down the lights, and let the wistful sax of Fausto Papetti steal out of the shadows upon your ear"...... Thanks Rodney for reminding me about Fausto Papetti. Ah feeling to put on meh gloves an sequins and dance

RE: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2013-Mar-29-0747Hrs
Hi Gabby
Many thanks for recent e mails including the photo of you and Patrice.  I have just read the blog and am TOTALLY fed up with people who are still saying that they did not get the Registration details which were issued so long ago... I doubt whether anyone will want to be part of a committee to plan a further reunion!  Errol has given up so much time to keep the Blog going... they least we can do is to read it regularly.
Maybe those who want personal treatment should pay a bit extra for FEDEX!   I don't even want to bring up that subject on the blog again!   Please excuse my venting... blessings,
Pat Ryan

I greatly appreciate Hazel's contribution re "the right thing to do." Exactly, how does one know what is the right thing to do; even adults have been practising things for most of their lives believing it to be the right thing....but only to discover it is wrong. I believe that this is really a hot topic and there can be lots and lots of contributions; then again the big problem.... INTERPRETATION. We see it everyday from the courts, and I am raising another hot topic the Interpretation of the BIBLE. Have a BLESS day my brothers and sisters.

"Do the Right Thing, because it is the Right Thing to do." is the motto of the Rose Hill R.C, which President Carmona mentioned in his speech.   He mentioned it as the motto of Rose Hill R. C. also had a a principal Ms. Thora Best who retired from Rose Hill and worked wonders there at the school.  Fr. Clyde Harvey is also the Parish Priest for the area. There was an interview with the two latter persons after the inauguration and Thora suggested that all schools in Trinidad and Tobago should have that as their motto. Mausicans making  waves again.  Was Zennie ever at Rose Hill? Maybe the motto was taken from her poem.  Is the poem in our Commemorative Mag?  Maria

Interesting that I too, waited for a note on registration and did not see any. How can registration be closed? In addition, I second the motion of Progues and Pat. Let organizers do their thing. Hope to see a schedule of activities, dates etc soon so those of us who can attend will do so.

Dear Errol,
Greetings! I loved Linda's poem. It's one i would have loved to recite publicly. I rememeber my days representing Mausica at the Arts Festival in prose and verse, together with Gerard Narinesingh.
Conrad, if I were you, I would not give up yet. Catering is never an exact science. I am sure your late registration can be accommodated.
Like most of the population, I am very proud of our new president. We attended Faculty of Law and law school around the same time, I do believe I was one year ahead. He is a regular guy and very sincere.
As I explained to Thora, of whom I am very proud , while I have admired Zennie's work for years, I do have a little problem with the admonition ( advice?) to students to " Do the right thing because it is the right thing to do," which is also the Rose Hill R.C.School's  motto and which was quoted by President Carmona in his inaugural speech. As a wise man noted recently, telling students to do the right thing, presupposes that they know what is the right thing and will thus act appropriately. Depending on the nature of their socialization and the level of development of their individual consciences, some students believe something is the right thing to do, when others know it is wrong, because they have been taught that some things that are morally and/ or legally wrong are justifiable because of their circumstances. I may be starting as debate here, but have you known me to run other than from a fist fight? Have a great Holy Week and a Happy Easter all.
Love to all , malice to none.

Kudos to our very own Zennie de Silva, wife of Patrick de Silva - both Mausicans of 65-67 year group, who wrote the poem Self-Discipline, which contains the line 'Do the right thing, because it is the right thing to do.'
This line was quoted by President Carmona in his inaugural address, and has now become the new national mantra, behind Discipline Tolerance and Production.
Congratulations also to the new President - Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona - my homie. He once again placed villages in the deep south - Dalley Village, Sobo Village, Los Bajos, and Fyzabad on the national landscape.

2013-Mar-15-2109Hrs
I will begin tomorrow, God willing the final formatting of the History of MAusica.
I will not be coming to the reunion, as I stated beore. I wish those attending from abroad woul bring a book about education to donate to the NAtional Library. Not everything our people need to know would be on Kindle. If some books ar e donated, it would help tae us beyond fete. But, I can only suggest.

Hi Errol,
..looks like I won't be able to attend the 50th reunion after all. I sent an email last week to Claire Creese-Woodley saying that I was about to send my registration, money, etc. and hadn't received a response. I guess I now have a response with Maria's note below which is very emphatic about registration for the gala being closed.  I woldn't come to T&T if i cannot attend the gala.
So, have fun all....:(

RE: The Challenge Trophy

2013-Mar-15-0710Hrs
Fellow Mausicans
YES to a Challenge Trophy
NO to any other prizes, monetary or otherwise.   Based on our track record re the  deadlines for various payments for the Reunion... that is a non- starter.  Please everyone... walk with your contribution towards the TROPHY.
I was excited re the idea of a Mausica Folksong, but Felix is right... we may have made some songs better known and appreciated ,and certainly added value to them with our harmonies, but let it rest there.
ABSOLUTELY NO to any input re criteria.   Let the organisers do what they have been doing all along.   IF someone wants to start up another contest that is another matter ( to which i do not subscribe).   Let us be sensible please. It is an exciting prospect, but stay calm.
There, I've said it .  Pat with love and blessings.ajoyous

RE: Legacy -Alumni Choir - Sanfest

2013-Mar-11-0904Hrs
These are some of my suggestions:
(i) Initially the focus be on primary school choirs;
(ii) A Challenge Trophy (Thanks in advance Dr Merle) and/or a cash prize and/or musical instrument (preferably folk);
(iii) The Judging Criteria be Diction, Tone, Interpretation - musical presentation (must include theme, texture, expressiveness, ensemble); dramatic presentation (to include originality and relevance);
(iv) A suggested list of 'Mausica' Folksongs (I tend to agree with Sheila) to be made available to the Sanfest Committee.
Thank you for being part of the discussion whether with pen (Amir, Gregory, Rodney. Dr Merle, Sheila) or with positive thought. Cutty (67 -69)

RE: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS

2013-Mar-08-0712Hrs
Dear Friends,
I strongly support the idea of the challenge trophy for folk songs but I ask the question, “What is a Mausica Folk Song?” We cannot just say that it is a folk song sung by Mausica. We did not compose those songs and the mere fact that it is called a folk song can mean that there is no known composer. I remember that while I was in the choir Mr. Williams got a lawyer’s letter from someone who claimed that we had ‘used’ a song that he had composed.
Perhaps it would be better to have the trophy for the best folk song choir and I can tell you that most of the choirs will sing folk songs that we have done and with Mausica arrangements. This has been happening in the National Music Festival for years.
A trophy donated by Mausica would be a wonderful gesture especially for our 50th anniversary.

Aye, hear nah man, wherever I go I can use “Mausica” money.
Fuh example, de odder day, Alan Simpson introduce meh tuh his cousin, Mike Lewis, from Sangre Grande. Then he tell meh dat he was ah postman who use tuh work in de post office in Brooklyn at de corner of Church and Bedford. Avenue.
Right away ah arsk him if he know Garvin Philip, meh Mausican brother. Dat is how ah get Garvin number and call him in Orlando. We ole talk fuh about two hours one night. Just catching up on shared memories.
Did you know dat is Garvin who encouraged Mr. Williams tuh buy ah big, string bass fuh de choir? An he use tuh play it too. He also say dat he was de first teacher tuh introduce steelband in school. Ah remember readin de article in de Guardian.
Enough bout Garvin, fuh now. Leh meh tell allyuh bout de lime by Mike Lewis. He say he was ah big time DJ from de East, Grande. Wen he start tuh play some oldies so ah had tuh take ah dance wit meh wife. De man drop ah Fausto Papetti on meh. Ah tink de tune name Caleb. Dat was one ah meh wife tunes in Mausica. Thank you Euline Peters for providing the name -4H Clubs - for the  primary schools Agriculture programmes. As retired grandparents may be we can teach our young ones to get involved in agriculture even as a hobby with our home grown gardens.
On another note Cutty your idea is fantastic and will truly complement the contributions of Mausicans to that organisation. As someone who also worked closely with Cutty, I am well-aware of his passion and love for music and have supported many of his activities especially his work in Point Fortin on 'Pan for Blues' a competiton for schools' steel-pan orchestras.
Additionally, I have also worked with SANFEST  from its inception and at all levels. Thus, as a former Curriculum Co-ordinator in Language Arts, Drama and Visual and Performing Arts which included Music, and on behalf of All Mausicans, especially those who have participated in any aspect in SANFEST, as they brought students from all over the country to compete, I will be most happy to donate a Challenge trophy for one aspect/level of the - Music Folk Choir. Cutty I am sure that you will be pleased.
Theodore, 'Scrathie', Marshall Montano won his first competition at SANFEST when he sang "I Love My Country".

RE: LONG LIVE MAUSICA

2013-Feb-28-1946Hrs
My Fellow Mausicans.
I love Cutty's suggestion.
Let's help him "Clang" the bells.
Rodney Foster
"Excellent suggestion Cutty.
Please give us some more details on the competition e.g. date, time and place, number of choirs etc. Let us know the cost of an appropriate trophy or trophies. Contact the local businesses for sponsorship and partnership in providing trophies.
I think that a challenge trophy would be a great way to perpetuate the Mausica name and legacy. In July last year, I had an interview on WACK Radio and requested that they play a Mausica folk song. The experience was refreshing..  Listeners loved it.  I will be willing to make a donation to the cost of the trophy.
I am proud of my Mausican brothers and sisters  making contributions to their community. For example, Makemba’s art project.in Laventille. I suggest that  Mausicans inform us, via The Blog,  of  their activities and their needs so that others can offer their help: time, service, monetary donations and other material contributions. I am planning to bring a “store bat” and donate it Barataria E.C. School.  In my early teens, a man we called Happy, gave the boys from Boobs two “store” bats and two rubber cork balls.
Happy was a big, tall man who lived to the East of my liming spot at the intersection of Twelfth Street and Second Avenue, Barataria. On his way to work on the docks, he rode down Twelfth Street. One evening, he dismounted his bike and asked Ms Mannah permission to build a shed in which he held Sunday school. Like you Cutty, he played the cuatro. He taught us how to play the tambourine. His up-tempo preaching and singing  attracted the children in the neighborhood and greatly influenced our lives.
I salute the “Happies “ in our alumni: Cutty, Geezmo, Maria, Pat Antoine, Andre, Desmond, Hazel, Brenda, Jerry, Buzzie, Felix, Alisford, Efebo, Makemba, Scratchie   Pat Ryan and so many others that we need to hear about. I appeal to you to let us know whatever you are doing. Mausicans returning for the Reunion could pack gifts in their suitcases or bring some dollars.
Aye, hear nah man, ah gorn. Meh wife cooking some saltfish and spinach downstairs. I love saltfish more than Sparrow. Ah getting distracted.
As usual,
Rodney Foster
