Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS 2020-MAR-13

"Even this will pass away."
The refrain that punctuated that poem of resolve that morning,   Harry Joseph, initiation week, 1967, reading to us freshers, dwelling on the refrain, with a glorious, mischievous, hint of a smile on his face, as we sat in despair in the assembly, after having witnessed first hand that Mausica sunrise, early that morning, wanting our mammy--or whomever we thought could bring us comfort--who could deliver us from Irma Clark, and that sinister, alarming reassurance, that nobody died last year.
From the Haven, Me, Anthony Lum, Deodath Maharaj, Victorinus David, Oswald Thompson, Arthur Hume, Raymond Mendes, Peter Pariag, Clyde Maurice, Lloyd Nagee, Gaston Alleyne, Noel T., on and on,
Up there the girls....Yvonne, Maura Cooselal, Psychee, Erline, ...
I am seeing some of the wisdom now in that very early Mausica lesson.

Fellow Mausicans.
I share the loss and sorrow of Pat’s passing. I remember her as a pleasant and gentle soul whose presence and quiet demeanor always improved the ambience of our gatherings. We knew that we were related, but the Mausica bond was sufficiently strong to push “working out” the connections into the background. My condolences to her family, other relatives and closer friends.

Very sorry to hear about the death of Sucre, very active Mausican,,...pleasant fellow..played on the football team...was third in the marathon from the airport to the college in 1968 sports meeting..he was second year to me...he 66-68, I 67-69....Rodney recently recounted a vigorous exchange with him....a quintessential Mausican....man from the Villa....did not hold that against him.....
Great to hear about Geezmo.....
These passings should remind us of the poem "Stopping by wood (on a snowy evening)" by Robert Frost.....was that in Lougheide's class? the operative passage here being ..
"The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep"
or Dylan Thomas
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
We are Mausicans all, with promises to keep and miles to go....we must rage against the dying of the light, by continuing  to keep the flag of the college flying, Moulding the Nation through Service" till the last breadth.
Then ah me body go down in de grave
Then a ah me sould going jump for joy
Death Oh! Death oh me lord...

RE: CAN WE TTALK?

2020-MAR-12-2025Hrs
My Fellow Fellow Mausicans,
Laughter is the best medicine. No wonder why we were so healthy at MTC.
Allyuh remember de Rennies. One morning in assembly,  de Joe encouraged de relationship: “Let de damn ting grow!” Inez, yuh remember dat?
Yesterday, ah call meh pardnah, Geezmo,. We laugh we head orf. He and Sistah Bernice represented “The Red Guards” at Muchacho’s homegoing. Kentie,( dat is Bernice sweet name fuh de Geez) and I took ah walk dong Memory Lane. He was in June Joseph Choir. He sing in Queens Hall fuh Music Festival wen Cuthbert Mathews get he nickname, “Clang”. Remember de song, “ Clang, Clang, Clang on the anvil” ? Nah. I wasn’t in dat choir. I was in de folksong choir, de flagship of MTC. I like tuh dance , sing and wine. I sing in “Village Bacchanal” . Meh roommate, Carlsbury, was de starboy. We use tuh sing all over de country and in de neighborin islands. Is in Dominica we get , steal , borrow “La Porrinden”.  We even use ah cuss word on stage at ah concert in Goodwill, Dominica. De whole audience gasped. Dem teachers didn’t know patios. Like Sparrow singing “Sasaye” “Cheweh mewh”. Oh Gawd, Sparrow, yuh go kill meh!”
By de way, let’s approach the media to memorialize MTC’s contributions to the Arts.  On Saturday, February, 23 rd, , when Despers won the Panorama, Cecil Francis, alias Sensi, reminded me that Carl Caton introduced pan in Picadilly Anglican School, in POS. Carl was his teacher and  Sensi later captained Despers when Rudolph Charles migrated to the States. Mausicans in everything. Let’s “Live The Legacy”.
So long for now.
Thank you, Big Bother, Errol.
Peace and Love.
As usual.

Pat was a member of the 1972-74 cohort. She was a cultural icon in Tobago, a person of quiet, but positive demeanor. She was ailing for some time now but has finally been granted her departure papers. Thank you Pat for all that you have given us. RIP.

RE: Black History Month 2020

2020-MAR-06-0112Hrs
My Fellow  Mausicans,
How was your Black History Month?
I had an inspiring experience. I attended the screening of “Joseph” in Stone Mountain, GA, “Hero” in Los Angeles, and the 60th Annual Negro Spirituals Concert, “Honoring Our Heritage in Song”, at Holman United Methodist Church, in Los Angeles.
On a sad note, I learned that my dear friend, Dr. Patricia Bath, cousin of our Mausican Brother, Mervyn Sandy, had passed away in May, 2019. Pat was a renowned ophthalmologist and Black inventor. Her great, great , grandfather was Sultan Jonas Mohoumed Bath. She had relatives in Tobago and St James. Pat wrote the Epilogue for my second book, “Walk in MY Shoes”.  Her father was a Pullman porter who lived in Harlem, New York. Thurgood Marshal’s first case as NAACP counsel was representing Pat’s father who became a motorman.
Dat is Black History. Trini in everyting!
Next time,  I’ll share with you the Prologue, written by Helen Pyne Timothy and Pat’s Epilogue
So long for now.  It’s 1:00 a,m.
Ah gorn.
Rodney Foster. 66-68

RE: Black History Month

2020-MAR-05-0412Hrs
My Fellow Mausicans,
I hope everyone had an enjoyable and insightful “Black History Month”.
MTC provided a well-rounded education. I vividly recall 3 Ps: Psychology, Philosophy and Principles of Education. Was it Mr. Dukhan or Mr. Joseph who asked us to define “Learning” and “Behavior”. They played and expanded our minds. Dukhan defined learning as a “ change in perception” . Then De Joe illustrated the true meaning of behavior. It was heavy stuff to digest. Especially after eating a heavy lunch.
So my mother wasn’t totally correct when she told , “Yuh have no behavior. If  yuh cant hear, yuh will feel.”
Then one day Dukhan asked,  “If a tree fell in the forest, did it make noise?”  If yuh hear debate.
“Wat choopidness dey talkin?”  Empiricism?
At the end of the class, meh good fren, Linda Heywood, asked, “ Mr Dukhan , how come a cow could eat green grass, excrete black droppings and produce white milk?” Yuh talk bout laughter. Dukhan couldn’t answer. Class dismiss.
Today, as a Financial Adviser, majoring in life insurance and retirement planning, I find myself constantly teaching my prospects and clients to change their perceptions of these fundamental financial tools. I now teach in different classrooms. June 1st. will be 37 years.
Sincere condolences to Rudolph Sucre’s family. Muchacho was my friend  and Hostel mate in Sunset Villa, 66=-67. He had a good jab. Once we were about to start a rumble in the foyer. Suddenly, Mr. Williams mysteriously appeared, as was his custom. He didn’t say one word. Fight done. Just so. No second round in the hostel or anywhere in TNT. On one of my visits to TNT , I called and chatted with Muchacho. Rest in Peace, my Mausican Brother.
As usual,
Rodney Foster 66-68
