RE: "Mausica"

2023-JUL-07-2042Hrs

My Fellow Mausicans,

My Sunset Villa Brother, Carl Caton, joins me in voting that Leroy Cox's kaiso was the greatest. When he taught the Common Entrance class at Picadilly EC, POS, the graduating class use to change some of the lyrics and sing their hearts out.

Well done, Carl! Send me the entire song.

Alisford, please bring the Solid Seven, "Go Go Calypso."

We will "Dance And Sing."

Thank you, Brother Leroy. RIP.

Yuh Roommate,

Rodney Foster 66-68.

RE: Reunion Time 2023

2023-JUN-27-1400Hrs

We are almost there.

On July 17th we shall gather at the "river of remembrance " to indulge ourselves in good old fashion bantering and Picong. It is the right thing to do.

Some 51 years after entering Mausica, my life, and that of those who are close to me, has been enriched because of those experiences. How can you explain to sane people that is was quite acceptable to lean out of your window, in the middle of the night, and hurl expletives across the campus. In fact, some people looked forward to hearing the announcements on the "radio station".

On a serious note, on May 10th or 12th, we received a payment of $2050. without an assigned name. If this is you, please contact sjw500@gmail.com for further information. Another payment from CITI Bank, Ireland for $2050. was also received without an assigned name.

This is Mayfair Mansion Radio Station signing off.

Fellow Mausicans,

Its almost time to meet and greet each other for our first gathering after the pandemic. Its not too late to participate in one or more of the activities. I cannot wait to host you when we gather for the Tobago leg of the gathering.

If you have paid monies to the bank, please contact Sheila Warner  - sjw500@gmail.com - with a copy of your receipt. We have funds that have been deposited into the account with no names attached. To our overseas based alumni, the exchange rate differs from day to day, therefore some of deposits are a few dollars short. We will rectify this once we meet.

Looking forward to breaking bread again....while we can.

Congratulations to all my Second Year colleagues who terrorized me and other Freshers of the 1972-74 cohort. This is fifty years since left us to carry the Mausica flag with pride. We learned well from you how the initiation thing went. The DJ Springfield, the Worm and even the cleaning of the garden with the razor blade. Happy Half a century of moulding a nation. You should feel proud of those who nurtured you - the Cuff, Ms. Hordatt, Fanny Roopchand, Mr. Maundy, Mr. Douglass and others. Enjoy the last quarter of your life. God has been good to you. Give Him praise.

MAUSICA CLASS 1971 – ’73 WILL BE CELEBRATING OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY this year 2023 since we graduated in 1973. Sincere Congratulations to our brothers and sisters. WE THANK GOD FOR INTELLIGENCE, HEALTH, STRENGTH and PERSEVERANCE to pursue such a humble yet honorable career. May God continue to bless us with that love to assist the children/people of Trinidad and Tobago and humanity as a whole wherever we have been sent.

P.S. Dear Errol, Thank you very much for the year list of students that you printed some years ago. Can you print/scan the list of 1973 graduates on this blog for us in your kindness. It can become a precedent or a tradition from now to print the 50th anniversary and 60th of the others. I am sure it will be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance.                                     Hostel Reps can email the lists from their hostels of 1973 graduates and photos.

RE: The Legacy

2023-MAY-18-1418Hrs

Hi Fellow Mausicans,

I know that many of you are planning to attend at least one of the activities of the upcoming reunion, "Beyond Friendship.....".  There are others who are unable to attend because of previous commitments and/or mobility issues. We are going to miss those who are absent and, we will celebrate our common bonds.

There is another way to continue these celebrations long after we are gone. Keep the legacy going by making a pledge to the Mausica Teachers' College Fund (awaiting recognition from the Registrar's Office), and help to continue "Moulding a Nation Through Service".

There are various ways you can contribute to the fund:

    > One time contribution.

    > Monthly contributions.

    > Make the Fund one of the beneficiaries of your Insurance policy.

    > Take out an insurance policy and make the Fund the beneficiary.

    > Leave a percentage of your estate, or part thereof, to the fund.

Whether you are able to join us at Reunion 2023 "Beyond Friendship....." or not,  you can still leave your impact on the education of our nation's youths.

Plegde information will be available during the reunion celebrations.

RE: "It's left to us."

2023-MAY-05-0105Hrs

My Fellow Mausicans,

Yesterday, I attended a graduation at Georgia State University in Atlanta. While waiting on the graduate, Cyd-Marie Allette, Marjorie's cousin, I observed one of  MLK 's quotations: "It's left to us."

You are so right Scratchy, Mausica is not dead. Our seeds are scattered all over the world and we are still planting. Remember the scientific fact, "Matter can never be created nor destroyed."

Last week; I chatted briefly with comedian, Errol Fabien. I reminded him of my interview on Gayelle, many moons ago.

Errol would welcome Mausicans to share our stories on his shows.

Therefore, graduates from all year groups  should call the media and inform the worlld about our beloved MTC.

Call Wack Radio and request "Go, Go Calypso".

When Cox and Aqui went to Brighton EC, La Brea, my room-mate, Leroy Cox, from de Coconut in El Socoro, hook up with Solid Seven, a combo that Geezmo had introduced to MTC. The tune was on the charts for a long, long time.

By de way, how is big sister Paddy,  of Lu Lu fame. Ask Felix if she" feint" or "faint."

Doh forget Vernon Langdon and Kay singing "Yellow Bird", Carlsbury's solo in "Come Leh We Go" and , of course, Brother Elmo Philip, Sweet man Doh Ray. Trevor Davis wit he stringban of chirren dat make Bernice Placide get thin. Yes,  La Porrinden we learn in  Dominica in 1967.

Memories, Memories, It's revival time!  Mausica is not dead.

Prepare fuh ah Karookee night in Tabago.

Carlston and Ritchie bringing de fish broth wit nuff dumplin.

As usual,

Rodney Foster 66-68

Also Elizabeth Romain (from Grenada)......whose status needs to be double-checked...  there is also Pearl Khan.. (either 67-79, or 68-70)...needs to be checked...there was tragedy....

That account by Hubert Garvin of how the college ended, is the saddest thing I have ever heard. Do they know what they killed there, back in 1975.? That place was the germ of something that could have gone on for centuries. It was one of the most original creations of the country, the backdrop being folk culture. It did not quite die. Good lord. They did not check to see that the heart was still beating. Death Oh Death. The Mauscia jumbie is still there, like the phantom in the basement of the opera house, singing.

RE: Mausica Transition

2023-APR-14-1837Hrs

Students of the 73 - 75 intake were in this transition. I was one of them. We straddled both phases, in that our first years, the 75 - 76 intake commuted to the College while we were still residential. All of us residential students were housed in the female hostels--the majority of males in Wingate and the rest in one of the bungalows on campus next to Mrs.Cuffie's. We had to make our own way to and from our schools for our 2nd and final teaching practice. The campus was not just the same without the residential first years. Some of them would stay on after class on some afternoons to lime with us, but once they left for home that hostel/campus camaraderie was gone. We even had to have our own graduation ceremony at the Scarlet Ibis Hotel rooftop in St. Augustine, because a few days before the end of the term we were greeted with a notice (just like our 2nd years, 72 - 74) which indicated the date of the last day of the term, the time of the last meal, the time to hand in keys, and the time by which we were to off the campus.

Oh Mausica...

RE: Passing of Django (Udho Rambarran)

2023-APR-14-1504Hrs

I mourn at the passing of Udho Rambarran (Django). My year group, 67-69.

Very happy that our group is so wired, that someone was able to find out about this.

Django was a real Mausican. Absolutely Bohemian spirit. Easily the champion Orange field man, perhaps across all year groups. His exploits almost always solitary, and midnight....returning with stocks for the all of the Villa.

Bags- full, deep into the night. Solitary and sometimes bareback.

He epitomised the place....made a mark...one of us...A character.

I have a special sadness about this passing because Django, who was from the Villa, as I said.. along  with Bobby Satram, his roomate, came out at the wrong end of a Fairhaven "take" one night.

I hope he did not have long memory about that...I would understand if he did.

I have a special acquaintance, mother of our daughter, who has not forgotten that Anna Alexander, from Grenada, 66-68, poured starch on her hair during initiation....

Kudos to Carlsbury for refusing to participate in the take of Django on principle. It is true that the "take" was an unwritten rule...Carlsbury taught me that night what maturity in essence looked like...

But in Mausica what would have been the point of maturity? So you want UWI men to be in our fete?

But a rule is a rule....My pardnah Clyde Maurice and I conformed to received oral characterization of rules for a "take".

Martin Brathwaite agreed with us.

First, there has to be some infringement in one hostel by a party from another hostel.

Django, for reasons that I am yet to work out, since we had never had any untoward exchanges......and since he and my roomate Sto never had noise....climbed to our window, second floor.. Haven and threw cow-itch on a bed....it was mine.. He could not have known who  lay in what bed...so it maybe was just a random attack on Fairhaven...I did not take it personally....but it was an attack on Haven.....and there was a remedy according to unwritten hostel rules....

Clyde and I went to the Villa, and got him....hiding in a cupboard....

According to the rules.....he had to be brought back to Haven  for the ceremony....as it were....

Martin Brathwaite was downstairs of us....and had spent that day in the dorm.....and saw the climber use his window sill....

Rodney remembers the night well, because Carlsbury was his room-mate.....and the unwritten rule of a "take" was that if you are a hostel man and there is a "take", which requires application of wet towels, by everybody present in the dorm.....and youb refuse to participate...then in turn....you will have to endure the fate of a take for non-compliance....

Suffice it to say that Rodney was not at all pleased that his roomate Carlsbury was ambushed in the Fair haven corridors....by offended Havenites....by men including deceased Martin Brathwaite....a fellow Red Guard man....and me and Clydee, and a HOST of other towel-carrying men....defenders of Haven....

This is a Mausica story on the death of a Mausican, and I have some guilt that it bears some hint of irreverance, but it seems to me that Death oh Death, Death Oh, When ah me body go down in de grave...den a mih soul go jump for joy...

Mausicans never die.

The death of Django provokes me. I can see him now with a very large bag of oranges, and about 1.00 am, crossing Fairhaven square. We wnet in there together....late August...1967, 56 years ago.

I saw Sahadeo chasing Kenneth Paul with a cultlass  across that square one night, just because he felt like it...and because first years have to be put through their paces if they are to get full Mausica membership.....

This has been my ode to Django.....Udho Rambarran, A true true Mausican. I loved him. A real spirit.

We were forged in that place. Our last chance to be adolescents, before adulthood appeared at the door...at our first teaching practice on those buses, up all night making charts....and then when the real teaching start...after Departure....and no bus coming to pick you up.....No more teaching practice again!....and you on your own....in life.

Udho Rambarran, Django, had the Mausica spirit. A true Mausican he was. But  a man can't just breach Fairhaven defenses without penalty. It was not personal...just a matter of Mausica and hostel honour...it just happend that it was him who breached our defenses....but is could have been anyone else.

We would have followed the, uhmm, law.

Respect and love to his family.

Scratchy.

RE: MAUSICA

2023-MAR-09-2133Hrs

My Fellow Mausicans,

"In all circumstances , give thanks."

Clive Gregory Grell was a model Mausican. He was a well- rounded graduate  of Mausica Teachers College who served his community.

I first met Clive when I entered Mausica in 1966. I believe I was the last male student to arrive at MTC on a Thursday morning, weeks after the classes had started in 1966. I roomed with Leroy Cox in Sunset Villa. Clive was on the second floor.

One Friday evening, either Ms Sharon Pouchet, the English Literature lecturer or Ms. Vargas, the Canadian Lbrarian, dropped us off opposite the Solo Factory on Don Miguel Road.

Clive and I walked the winding Don Miguel Road to Jogie Road then made a left turn on Twelfth Street.  At   # 24, we entered the yard where my mother lived.

In two-twos, my mother fixed us a meal: vienna sausages fried up with plenty tomatoes and onions, hops bread and orange juice.

Clive and I bonded that evening. In 2012, Clive and Mary, with less than twenty-four hours notice, prepared the repast when my mother died. The food was excellent.

Clive was meh pardnah and Mary was meh sister. His brother,

Bersie, Toyo, became my brother too. Bersie introduced me to Bunny Dupigny who worked at Howard University. Bunny visited my sister, Doreen and Vernon Fingal, in Maracas Gardens, St Joseph. Next thing yuh know is meh nephew, Brent Fingal , attending Howard. Today, Brent is a Civil Engineer.

As Lord Nelson say , "All ah we is one family".

Everybody loved Clive.

By de way , Efebo reminded meh dat one evening Clive break ah ankle while playing basketball. Dey preparin tuh take him some food and drinks in de hostel.  Clive  appear  out ah de blue in de auditorium. " Allyuh tink ah go miss dis fete."

Rest in peace my dear friend and pardnah.

As usual,

Rodney Foster 66-68

Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS 2023-FEB-10

2023-FEB-10-1500Hrs

Sister Hazel, when I was a youth in Marabella we used to dress up nice on Sundays. And I had a suit in Mausica too for when we had suit fete...which UWI and Centeno men COULD NOT GET IN.

I notice that in "Ladies excuse me" sets, nobody used to come and ask anybody I dancing with to excuse themselves so they could dance with me. I left Mausica wondering about that...because Noel T and my roommate Clydee and other Mausica men did not have trouble with their sets being disrupted so somebody else could dance with them....they did not have that problem.

I did not realise that I was not satorialy desirable....look how many decades before I find out what de problem was..   all the time I thinking that the girls find out I did not go to a prestige school....because some of them Mausica girls was class conscious....dont get me started....

I learned a lot from Fanny Roopchand, and it had class in Mausica....When I started talking to Allison some of her convent friends stop talking to her....because dey say Scratchy ent had class....he did not go to a school where they wore blazer.....Now i finding out i was not dapper....

The other day a Mausican lady from Kirkendale told me that at Mausica she was afraid of me....and I could not understand how that could be...but look it was only last year she told me that,  and it late now to fix that and any other shortcomings that I might have had then.

I think I used to look nice in the Mausica  flannel jacket and black bow tie...when we went Queens Hall and ting.......and in the glory Guys blue sweater we used to wear  on evenings when we decided to throw frogs into the dining room.

I hope Efebo dont read this about frog throwing, because it might remind him about the evening when Marcelin had to climb on the dining room window sill, after me, Kenneth Bobb, Clydee, Wray McBurnie, Gregory Byrne, Noel T, and Foo, entertained with airborne frogs.

Hazel you was from Kirkendale, and I can't remember a girl from that hostel ever saying morning to me, even though I was calypso king, and win the marathon..and also was Victor Ludorum.

Kirkendale Ladies.

What you have to do to please a Kirkendale girl?

Lord Scratchy, calypso King, 1969;Victor Ludorum, same year. (Still could not impress dem Kirkendale ladies).

But Wingate and Villa had nice girls too, and nobody from there ever suggest to me that I was satorialy inept, or that I just did not look good, or did not go CIC.

RE: Groups

2023-JAN-30-2128Hrs

Dear Mausican,

Good night. On behalf of the Mausica Teachers' Foundation group, I am reaching out to all groups within the Mausican years. Our aim is to put all groups in touch with the Foundation, so that more members can be aware of what is taking place that's Mausican. I would therefore need the name of the group, a person to be contacted and the contact number.

For example, I am aware of the Mausican chat and the Cuban chat and how to get in touch with them, but there are little cells scattered throughout the years with whom we would like to get in touch.

The information can be sent to me at bmmell@yahoo.com. Thanks for your quick cooperation. May 2023 be a wonderful year for us.

Regards,

Barbara Mellowes 66

RE: Passing of another colleague

2023-JAN-14-0809Hrs

Condolences go out to the family of Robbie Richardson who died on Friday January 13th. He was a part of the 1969-1971 year group. He was married to Kathleen Clarke of the 1970-1972 group. He was cousin to Maureen Sotilleo-Providence (1970-1972). May God comfort his family and friends at this time.

Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS 2023-JAN-13

2023-JAN-13-1906Hrs

Haven forever.

Good to read what Rodney says here. I had gone two and a half years already at John Donaldson with nothing to show when I decided to switch to Mausica. Irma Cambridge lived next door to me in Marabella so I had heard a bit about the collegue....then there was La Porriden on Bob Gittens every morning.....Darnley Gittens' father.

As to remembrances during the first week I went out to play football  with the second years who were looking for first year "talent" among freshers to replenish the side. Went out with fellow freshers Nazir Khan, Dave Didier, Ho Sing Loy, Roy Jagroopsingh, Gregory Byrne, Kelvin Newton,. I think Hospy (Horatio Hospedales) came in late....but was a very good player.

Second year footballers in the mud included Efebo Wilkinson (Wilkee), Carlsbury Gonzales, Phillip Kendall, Frederick Beckles, Gerald Hernandez, Leslie Grenidge (Horse), Darnley Gittens, Joe Ragoonansingh, Dalton Taitt, Kent Rennie (Geezmo), Carl Caton,

They cut off my muff early in the week so I needed a trim at the weekend. Then somebody said to me "Scratchy we playing Saturday in Arima, and you on the side!

So I said well I have to skip dat because I have to go to Marabella so that Tanty Popo and Uncle Kyran could see dat ah ent dead, because they looked worried when they were leaving that Sunday evening, as dark clouds began to descend over the campus....as they were driven away leaving me behind.

Irma Clarke had a worrying sign that said "nobody died last year". I was disturbed by that sign.

Anyway, there was the fact that I needed a trim, because I had lost my muff to Fairhaven barbers during the first week.

Well the big men on the team say Scratchy you can't go home Saturday, you have to play. You on de side.  And furthermore , we carrying you to see the Joe about this.

Indeed that Friday afternoon at super, before the first week fete, they brought me before the Joe, and lodged their complaint that this is Scratchy, and he want to go home tomorrow, and we have a game.

The Joe looked at me with no pitty, and said well Scratchy you could get your trim in the morning and come back to the campus in time for the game..

I said OK sir.

The whole thing solved. I gone home to Marabella, Tanty Popo shocked to see my head. Went to the barber at Union Junction, then headed right back to sweet Mausica. Played that evening in Arima.

I hardly went home after that. Over the two years.

Scratchy.

Re: MAUSICA WEEKLY EMAILS 2023-JAN-13

2023-JAN-13-1600Hrs

My dear Rodney, You are terrible! I laughed out so loud at your last line that everyone around wanted to know what had tickled me. My response was " Only a Mausican would understand." Of course, I know of what you speak only from rumour. You may not know it , but we earned the name, "Kirkendale ladies."

That Mausica radio station would qualify as defamation of character. I recall hearing one night: "Calling KIrkendale! Calling Kirkendale! Hazel, send Garth home! " All the poor innocent man was doing was delivering or borrowing some records. Why all yuh so?

Making freshettes say, " I love you, Freddy, very, very much", to a frog, and even kissing the frog and acusing you of hurting Freddy's feelings if you refused to comply was emotional abuse. That is when education began to go downhill. I am not laughing, but do confess to some grinning.

And just imagine having a less- endowed sister recite, while doing stretching arm exercises," I must!  I must! I must. I must increase my breast." I felt sorry for her.The women were just as bad at torture as the men. Mausica was a torture chamber during initiation. So why is nobody looking contrite?  Today, I still regret making Morris Marshall sign up for La Sororitee. I also regret singing the calypso, Mamas without Papas, and thank Noel T. and Ken Parmarsad from rescuing me from the cut tail the gang of women had threatened to put on me that night. And we all know what contest the late Arthur Hume won. Oh! Mausica! What memories we have of you.

RE: Angels In Our Lives

2023-JAN-13-0311Hrs

My Fellow Mausicans,

One of the key experiences in my life occurred when I was selected to attend Mausica Teachers College, in 1966.

Thanks to the founding members of the pioneers, 1963- 1965, and Mr. Fitz James Williams and Mrs Daphne Pilgrim Cuffie who founded The Mausica Teachers Choir.

I heard them singing on the radio stations in Sweet TNT. In 1964, they won the Folk Song Championship. They defeated  La Petite Musical.  I wanted to sing Rice and Peas, Lulu, Sammy Dead and Itanami. I vowed to become a member of that group.

Thanks to my dear friends, Errol  Williams and Harrison Joseph, both now deceased, who informed me " Just get five O Level subjects in Cambridge GCE and apply, English Language included.

Today, I want to send a special shout out to Ken Marshall who was my  High School teacher in Form 4 at Osmond HS in San Juan. I met him again when I enrolled at Mausica in 1966.

Ken, Steve Martin, Donald Walker, Lloyd Brown and Garnet Luke also  taught me how to "dress to impress", lime on Frederick Street and drink Carib beer at Humming Bird on Saturday mornings.

Congratulations to Hazel and Mausicans all over the world  for continuing to " Mold A Nation Through Service".

Aye, hear nah man, is 3:00 am. Ah going and sleep.

Next time ah go thank dem pioneers who carved de north-south track across de tennis court and introduced playing chess without a chess board. Thank you Villa Nova, Wingate and Kirkendale.

As usual,

Rodney Foster 66-68
