Re: Mausica Reunion 2007 Update

I was wondering about Evelyn Hordatt, who brought uncommon passion to the teaching of infant methods. Does anyone know? What a fantastic teacher. She and Lance Loughiede gave demonstration lessons in the assembly hall, while we first years sat in the balcony in from of the library. Loughiede taught a lesson on Prometheus, god of fire, asking these D'Abadie children if they could see the connection between fire and learning. My god, how were we so lucky to have teachers like that? Evelyn Hordatt told us a story about how children responded to her when she asked how people called chickens. And one of the children said that he had heard the call "all yuh eh want?" And she enjoyed telling us about this and lit up in delight. I view her as an original, though not quite in the league of the Cuff.

Gwen,
imagine I am now a Mama. One of my Mausican friends met me a few years ago(Remember Batman?) He looked me over and said:" Well, well, well, if Hazel could get fat, ANYBODY could get fat. "Since he has not put on an ounce since leaving Mausica, I do not know what to say.
Is it not good we can laugh amidst all of the crime etc? God is good. I feel the reunion will be really good. I hope I can make it.
I am trying to locate a copy of the folk musical skit (don't know what to call it) I wrote for De Cuff's retirement function at Valsayn. It incorporated Mausican memories with our folk songs. Can anybody help?
Hazel.

I had a good belly laugh at that one. Just what the doctor ordered. Thanks, Scratchie. Keep them coming.
Remember when the thief stole the girls undies from the line and next morning at Assembly Mr. Osbourne said that they took the shadow and they coming back for the substance. I, somehow, never appreciated his brand of humour.

I have not been to the actual site but Fanny was a dear. If the expression had existed at the time, instead of laughing at Miss Woods' explanation of the burnt pie everyone would have said loudly and in uison " YEAH, RIGHT!!!" Are we going to do some singing in Tobago? Two weeks ago i remembered all the lyrics of ALEXANDER... WHO REMEMBERS THAT ONE FROM THE CHOIR?
Pat. I am so looking forwrd to the reunion!

So Mr. Dukhan is lecturing on "catatonic schizophrenia" and how people who are overcome by the condition behave. They fix their gaze on an object for long periods of time. So Pearl Mulrain, 1967-69 (who sang the Pudding tumbledown) says, "Mr, Dukhan, it have a woman in Princess Town who had Catarrh, and she behave just like you describing, it have any relation between Catarrh and Catatonic schizophrenia?". Duhan, without looking up, "n o, she just had both".

Hazel,
Thanks for the memories.... you have aptly described our dear lecturers... Ms. Wood...Fanny Roopchand... and Mr. Dukhan. I remember them ever so well... At Home Ec. class Ms. Wood showed us how to bake a pie..... it 'came out' burnt and we were not impressed. She did it over and then explained that the burnt one was to show us how NOT to do it.. and of course the other was done in her image of perfection.... we howled with laughter Fanny Roopchand....that JF Kenny's widow, Jackie Kennedy, could marry the aging Aristolte was (in her words), a matter for tears... Mr. Dookhan... gentle indeed.. as he had us think deeply on concepts in Psychology such as 'projection', 'sublimation' and the like. Went to a few fetes this Carnival and in the main, there was so much litter that strewn the surrounding afterwards. I found myself thinking of the Grell Cup Competition for the Hostels; and the Jo cautioning that after each MTC fete, his Hall must be spic and span for Assembly the next morning.... with no evidence of the event the night before....! It was indeed a gentler time.... and Hazel you are right... MTC shaped us all.... for the better thankfully...

I have just been perusing the website. What a wonderful job you are doing! Thanks for the memories. Mausica was a defining period in all of our lives. It realy moulded us so we could later "mould a nation through service."
I observed, though, that in your list of deceased faculty you omitted the names of: Beryl Wood: "I am only one Wood." You dare not call her Miss Woods; Hamlyn Dukhan, so gentle he was and yet, so profound; and Constance "Fanny "Roopchand, who introduced herself to her students, thus: "My name is Fanny Roopchand and I am divorced." She was so real a person, so down -to -earth. Her voice and gait defined the person. I used to drop in on her at her family home on the Eastern Main Road when I was in my first year at UWI. I was at all their funerals and wept for the end of an era and the loved we shared. Oh yes, and Matron I can still see her smile.
